  1. Test day is nearing and I am getting nervous. Not about the test itself, but making sure I have everthing else all set up. A- I am going to be using my 4-free score reports on programs that have that Dec. 1st deadline. Can I send my scores to this universities even though I have not opnened an application with them yet? Should I quickly start an application at these four schools or do they keep my score on file even if they do not have any record of me applying yet. B- Do I need to write down the institution codes for these four schools that I am applying to? Do I have to memorize them due to the limitation of not being allowed to bring anything into the test with you. Or do you get to search for the school? C- Does each seperate program at a school have different institution code, like the counseling psych program have different code than the social psych program? Thanks!
  2. I agree with our treehugging friend, 159quant is nothing to be discouraged about, especially with a near perfect verbal. From my understanding, quant is less important in fields such as IO as opposed to Quantitative Psychology, for example.
  3. NBTR, I totally agree. In the past I've experienced some issues with the timing of my second math set. I nearly always go 20/20 on my initial quant set, but with the second (most difficult tier) quant set I get so frustrated because I KNOW I could figure out every single problem if I wasn't timed, but I don't always go about the advanced problems in the most time efficient manor. Essentially, I make stupid errors on easier problems because I'm too concerned with saving my time for a problem that will take me 3+ minutes to solve.. Thanks for sharing your experience, it's always nice to not feel all alone out here in the GRE-world.
  4. Yep there it is, thank you so much for your responses.. My mistake was just a simple and careless error. I did: 2^2 + 1^2 = C^2 and some how managed to think that C was √9 instead of √5... This translated into me assuming that each side of the triangle was 3, for a perimeter of 9.. Ugggh, these simple errors are holding me back from that elusive 170 With any luck and plenty of optimism, I will have made every simple error possible in practice to have gotten it out of my system before the real test next week. Thanks again! SP30
  5. Im struggling with a question and was hoping for some help. "In the xy- coordinate plane, triangle RST is equilateral. Points R and T have coordinates (0,2) and (1,0), resepctively" Quantity A= The perimeter of Triangle RST. Quantity B= 3√5 I had answered that Quantity A was larger, but the correct answer is "C", they are of equal value.. My logic must be off, so I will not even explain what I did. Thanks for your help!
  6. I have no idea how people get 170 on verbal...
  7. Hannah, Unfortunately I am as much in the dark on this matter as you are. I'm still confused on if I should be applying to Ph.D or Masters programs, based on my strength of application. I will say, that I am impressed by your positive attitude, and am certain that if you re-took the test that you would score better. The rest of your application looks really strong from where I'm sitting. I think you have time to re-take the test if you are considering trying to strengthen that aspect. Good luck, I wish you the best! SP30
  8. Hello I would like to discuss and hear what others opinions are on the topic. This is relating to any psych program other than clinical. I am wondering what the big differences are between getting into a Ph.D program vs a masters program (after undergrad). Obviously I would prefer to go right into a Ph.D program, but I am not sure if I will have a competetive enough application. How much harder is it to get into a Ph.D program right out of undergrad than it is to get into a Masters program? Typically on school websites they will post the mean GRE score for both those accepted into the Masters program and those accepted into the Ph.D program and the Ph.D students seem to have much higher GRE scores. What would you guys say is a competetive GRE score for Ph.D and Masters programs, respectively. Thanks for the discussion! SP30
  9. I have got a question that I'm sure I should already know, but am slightly confused: What is a better masters degree for moving onto a PhD program after? M.A. or M.S.? Thanks, SP30
  10. I have a few questions for the application veterans here on the board: I am taking the GRE on September 10th, and have been studying sedulousy. Practice tests are scoring in the 310 range, so nothing to brag about here, but I am proud of my gradual improvement. I have sort of pushed everything else regarding the application process to the back-burners so I can really focus on the GRE, but I don't want to be caught flat footed. --When is the appropriate time to begin working on retrieving transcripts? How onerous is this process in your experience? I attended 2 different community colleges before going for my undergrad, so this is going to be a little tougher. What is a typical cost to have transcripts sent out? --I have a rough draft CV set in place, but the majority of my research experience will be coming this next semester (and the following semester) as I just landed a spot as a R.A, so how do I include this in my CV? Any ideas? --I am holding off on my SOP for the most part until I have some better research expereince to write about. I do have an outline, but how long does this take to perfect? When is the latest I should start this for the Dec 1st applications? --Regarding POI's, they seem much easier to find for Ph.D programs, but can anyone give any advice on how to find POI's in masters programs? I need to look into some masters programs for security. Although PhD programs would be ideal I am worried about my GRE score for getting into these. I will be applying for counseling, social, developmental, and even kinesiology programs, depending on the school and where they emphasize sport-psychology. GPA: 3.96, Research assistant for next semester, have presented my individual research at a symposium, and will get to present again this November with my faculty memeber I am working with. Personally I am happy with my research experience which at my school is competitive and hard to find, but it sure seems dwarfed by some of your very impressive undergraduate research experiences. Thanks for any help, advice, and input, SP30
  11. I have been sending out emails to POI's all across the board and have tried a few different methods and have observed varying results. I often struggle to keep my introductions concise, and often times become too wordy. Nevertheless, I have recieved some very encouraging responses, most likely from professors who get less "fan mail." With the higher prestige schools, I will often get a generic response encouraging me to refer to the program's website, which I find to be redundant seeing as I am emailing this professor specificly about a program that I am already quite familiar with. When I try the short and sweet method, responses are almost always generic feeling. This may be because I have presented less information about myself, or because the professors are buried in emails that are exactly like mine. One experience that I had that set me back was when I finally perfected my introduction email to my #1 POI and she responded within 12 hours stating very emphatically that she will not be accepting students for 2014. That's life, on to the next.
  12. Hails11, you'll have to let me know what you think of UW. I am applying there to the Kinesiology program. I am from the states though, for what that may be worth to you in detailing your experience.
