Fall 2014 applicants??
tingdeh replied to sugoionna's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
Got the same advice! Did not listen one bit. Not even from a prof who I have a total crush on. Ah well. -
1. A scholar whose work I have admired for a long time has expressed interest in taking me under her wing. 2. The location is absolutely supreme for my topic of choice--it's near where the people I study live! 3. The non-Canadian weather. 4. *The non-Canadian weather.*

Any Sigma Tau Deltans here?
tingdeh replied to tingdeh's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
I'm part of the first (and only) Canadian chapter going so I have no idea what to expect! -

Aww. Would have been great to see you there! -
Wondering if any Sigma Tau Delta folks are applying to graduate school. And also, if anyone is going to Savannah this year!

Fall 2014 applicants??
tingdeh replied to sugoionna's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
Another UCLA applicant, best of luck to us! I'm hoping to work with Keith Camacho, Elizabeth DeLoughrey, and Victor Bascara from the postcolonial group. Asian American and Pacific Island literatures are my interests. -
Fall 2014 applicants??

I gave the admissions coordinator a call earlier and she indeed said they will be going out in the next week or so. Gah! -

A Berkeley rejection (not a lit program though) will definitely kill me, too. I have so much love for the faculty there. -
The Projected Results Game
tingdeh replied to Kamisha's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
I think it'll be a 1/5 for me! I really hope so. I have three contacts at my dream school (one of whom is an academic association president and a friend), but that program is way too small to count on. Really hoping from a follow through at the school across the bridge! Department chair liked my work, so hopefully that translates to the rest of the committee... -
What are you reading?
tingdeh replied to bluecheese's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
Do you mean Slavoj? -
I've been wrestling with this in my head recently. One of my letter writers is the Dean, who is a really good friend. He has never taught me, but we sometimes talk research, he has seen me and mentored me in my involvement at school, and he works in my general field of interest. Still a gamble because he cannot talk specifics of research, but more character. But I hope he is a harmonious balance with my two research advisor LOR writers.

My favourite novel! I have read it twice now...so of course I've applied to the West Coast. Sigh. -
No, not at all. I know that the first round of UCLA and Berkeley acceptances come in the first week of February, based on the results page. Everything else comes later in the month, so I've got quite the wait!

I've been anxious everyday! My POI there hasn't been responding which might only mean that they are neck deep in selection time. (Or they're busy of course.) What's your field of interest? I'm coming from a humanities background so I hope to look forward to learning social science methods!

Right on! Did you find it relieving or dreadful that no GREs were required for Berkeley? I had really mixed feelings about it because on one hand, my GREs are nasty, but on the other hand, I had to do far more work with both Statements and connecting with profs there.
-
Applied to Berkeley's Ethnic Studies PhD program and I'm unbelievably nervous! No GRE requirement, which means that anything goes. Anyone else applying to this program or another Ethnic Studies department? Come and huddle with us!

Anyone else applying to English programs??? Going crazy
tingdeh replied to Jocko's topic in Waiting it Out
Applied to UCLA and U Michigan English (among other programs)! Horrible subject GRE, okay general GRE. But a strong application with the rest of it, including research fellowships and conferences. Best of luck to everyone! One day, MLA will be filled with what will be called Generation Grad Cafe. -
Sh*t people say when you are applying to grad school
tingdeh replied to Clou12's topic in Waiting it Out
LOVED Tropic of Orange. Personally for my research interests I've gotten into the American Pacific and all the literature/culture there, speaking broadly--the region where queer literature and culture takes on aesthetic as well as political dimensions. I love it! Have you heard of the author R. Zamora Linmark? A Filipino American writer, and he's just brilliant. Which brings me onto my next "Sh*t peoples ay when you are applying to grad school" contribution: out of some feigned or naive interest in my pursuits, my parents skimmed through (read: looked at the back cover of) some of my honours thesis texts, and got really uncomfortable when all my texts were queer texts. The question that follows: "I don't mind the gays but there's so much more to Philippine culture that's more relevant, so why do you want to study this?" Can't teach an old homophobic dog new tricks. -
...I just remembered that I might be leaving the kids and teens I teach at the martial arts gym. If you get in, I would love to hear about your transition out, especially as a fellow instructor! Sigh...

Haha, at one point my dad kept trying to convince me to do a Masters in Theology. ("It will help you learn more to discover your faith!") He is a reverend and I'm an outed atheist. And I'm an Asian Americanist. -
I have been feeling the anxiety every day since I finished my applications. My family isn't a great support system and this holiday season was just too much of them around that I couldn't get my needed head space. Having said that, today I started my final semester. My classes were nothing but spectacular today, absolutely dynamite. Part of the relief, too, came from seeing friends and being able to focus on that senior thesis. Here's to our good health and persistence!

I work in my school's IT department which I can keep going at for 18 months after graduation. If I don't get in, then working for a year it is and reapplying. If I do get in, however...still working Either way, I hope to go to the Maritimes in Canada on a road trip. I've lived in eastern Quebec for a bit and picked up French there, but I have always wanted to go more east. Ah, summer...how I miss you.

What are your 4 dream jobs? Are you qualified for any of them?
tingdeh replied to Authorization's topic in Jobs
1. English or American Studies professor. Chasing it right now! 2. A hip hop artist and producer. Make the beats and spit bars over them, too. 3. A reclusive pure mathematician. 4. A film critic. I was devastated when we lost Mr. Ebert, I really loved his work. -

Exogenesis Symphony by Muse. All three parts, without interruption. I once tried studying to it but found myself immersed for fifteen minutes. It is a beautiful piece of music!
