  1. Ethics, broadly (including normative and applied ethics, and metaethics).
  2. UW Madison. Most excited.
  3. Congratulations! Not sure if it was my spot, though, I declined a little while back. Either way, that's great news!
  4. Thanks! Good luck to you with your decision and future studies as well.
  5. Posted this in another thread, but posting here as well because I know many of you are on the Wisconsin-Madison waitlist. I officially accepted my Wisconsin offer, and my AOI is ethics, broadly. It seems that they have about eight offers of admission out, and at least three of those have officially accepted including myself.
  6. I accepted my offer from Wisconsin after visiting over the weekend! I have declined all of my other offers (see signature). Hopefully this helps some of you! To those of you waitlisted at Wisconsin--it seems that they have about eight offers of admission out, and three of those have officially accepted including myself. My AOI is ethics, broadly.
  7. It seems that you don't have anything to lose. Might as well ask.
  8. Still waiting on a Riverside rejection. My name is toward the middle-end of the alphabet, are they coming out in alphabetical sets possibly?
  9. I did not name faculty or tailor my statement very specifically for each school. I did have one line in the final paragraph where I would list a few of the department's strengths that overlapped with my interests, citing those strengths as my reason for considering the program. Mostly, I tried to just give an honest description of what I am interested in studying, and I think that it was apparent based on that description that I would be a good fit for the schools that admitted me. I got into 8 out of the 12 programs to which I applied.
  10. This might be useful for those of you confused about class size and the number of admits to UW-Madison: http://www.grad.wisc.edu/education/academicprograms/profiles/765.pdf
  11. I'm hoping to move early in July. Not sure yet how this is going to work financially, but I'd like to get settled and acquainted with the new city before throwing myself into the program.
  12. Congrats on the good news!
  13. Uh oh. Hope none of you waitlistees have an AOI in ethics, I don't want any trouble.
  14. What great news, congrats!
  15. On the topic of declining, has anybody had difficulty communicating their declension to a school? I emailed the ASU graduate advisor very soon after being admitted in order to decline, but didn't hear back. A week later I get a generic "Welcome to ASU!" email, so I'm not confident they are aware I've declined. Should just email them again...?
  16. Responding to the posts above: I did get into the one school at which my professors had connections, but I also got into 7 others where there were no meaningful connections. I think maybe having connections to a school could help boost your application, but it's neither necessary nor sufficient toward getting in.
  17. I think if visiting is especially important to a prospective before making a decision, then I'm not waitlisted anywhere currently, but I don't think I would have strong reservations about asking to visit. I don't know that I would want to eventually end up at a program that responded in a hostile way to what is a reasonable request from a potential prospective. It seems like that kind of reaction might be a bad sign about the department culture, etc.
  18. I was offered fairly similar funding packages everywhere, especially when cost of living is taken into account.
  19. I am. My main AOI is ethics, but early modern is my favorite historical period to study.
  20. Declined an offer of acceptance with a generous fellowship from UC Davis, hope this helps someone either get in off the waitlist or get better funding.
  21. I was hoping to do something similar to this over the summer. I think the list Wait for it... posted is a good one, thanks for sharing!
  22. Not at all surprising! Congrats on an incredible season. I hope you end up becoming a very famous philosopher one day so we can all say we knew you when.
  23. Congrats to all Rutgers and Princeton admits!
  24. I'm planning to visit several departments before deciding. Schools are listed in my signature in order of interest.
  25. Oh, sure thing. For anyone hoping for an acceptance from UIUC, you might find the following excerpt from the email I received interesting: "This is a very exciting time for us here as we have an aggressive growth plan that we have just begun to implement. For instance, the department recently voted to extend an offer to Ned Markossian, and we are in the midst of a second search for a mid-career value theorist."
