  1. Usually mellow, ambient music. Once upon a time I was a music major and studied quite a bit of theory, so most music catches my ear in a distracting way.
  2. If the UIC admit sees this, please PM me if you don't mind sharing details. I received a somewhat vague voicemail from UIC the other day (why oh why do I leave my phone on silent!), and I'm currently waiting for them to follow up.
  3. I was under the impression that this might be more popular as well. Maybe the phil science people aren't the type to post on grad cafe for some reason.
  4. Not that I know of. I was only allowed up to 20 options for the poll, and there are far more areas in philosophy than that, so unfortunately I did not include action theory.
  5. I think Loric enjoys the negative attention we give him, and it would be in most of our interests to stop responding to him. Unless you're all utilitarians and Loric is in fact the utility monster, then continue.
  6. I hate choosing favorites, but if I must... Hume.
  7. I will probably celebrate by going out for a nice dinner and a few drinks with friends. (Maybe more than a few, who knows.) If I get shut out, I'm sure it will feel horribly disappointing. However, I hope I'll try moving on as quickly as I can and start working out my alternative plans.
  8. I don't know if I'm just oblivious to a lot of these problems, or if I'm just insanely lucky to be in a department with professors who are highly encouraging of female students and with male peers who are respectful and take me seriously. Reading all these things about the climate for women in philosophy almost worries me that I'm going to get to grad school and have a bit of a shock.
  9. Thanks for sharing this! I'm a woman applicant, just noticed this thread actually and read through your earlier posts. I appreciate that you took the time to share your thoughts on the issue and your experiences as a grad student.
  10. I was planning on a card or something in a couple months, thanking them and indicating where I've decided to attend. (Being optimistic about getting in somewhere.) I'm considering a gift card or something else additionally, but I think they understand how much money I've just spent and may even be uncomfortable if I spend money on them at this point.
  11. What, if anything, did you chance in your application between being shut out and getting in?
  12. Since so many people have responded at this point, I'm hesitant to make any changes. Not sure how I didn't include history of philosophy broadly in the first place, but people are welcome to leave a comment if it is their AOI and even specify the tradition or time period.
  13. Philosophy of Science has been added, and there is no more room for additions. If your area isn't included, choose "other", and feel free to leave a comment in order to specify.
  14. No need to frown. I have added them to the poll. There can be up to 20 options, and we are now up to 19. I can add just one more if someone has another suggested addition.
  15. I definitely agree! Hopefully this gives a somewhat accurate picture of the competition within different areas, although we can't be sure how closely GradCafe users mirror the overall competition.
  16. I can't speak for everyone, but I'm certainly curious as to how many applicants on this forum share my philosophical interests. This is an anonymous poll for those of you concerned about issues of privacy, and you may choose as many of the options as you would like (though try to restrict it to your primary interests!) I apologize if I left anything significant out of the poll options.
  17. Congrats on the acceptance!
  18. It says that my application status is "submitted". It doesn't say anywhere whether or not they received my transcript.
  19. I applied there, but haven't received any email.
  20. I took a math seminar about infinity a while back, and I've found a lot of what I learned to be helpful in my philosophy classes. No idea what adcoms would care about, but I would imagine that they would care far, far less about your performance in a math course than performance in your philosophy courses.
  21. Based on the websites of the programs I applied to, it looks like some will pay some or all, and some wont.
  22. Congrats, bar_scene! Hopefully the rest of us receive similar news sooner than later.
  23. Letters, I think. My GRE and GPA are solid, but no better than most other applicants. And hopefully my writing sample is as good as my professors assure me it is. I'm generally hyper-critical of my own work, so I'm not sure that I'm the best judge.
  24. This, exactly. I can understand not considering location too heavily for those who have a narrow AOI, but for those of us whose interests can be served by many programs, I think geography should be high on the list of considerations. In fact, my advisers explicitly suggested considering location when I asked for advice on choosing programs.
  25. Location was actually a pretty big consideration for me while narrowing down my list of programs, so nearly all the programs I've applied to are in places I would love to live. Mostly programs located near cool cities or with great weather. (My interests are fairly broad, and I had to narrow it down somehow!) I have a significant other moving with me, so I'll definitely be taking his preference into heavy consideration if I get the luxury of choosing between programs. That said, I applied to several schools in California and Arizona, and I'd be happy to move there for the weather (especially lately). Also applied to a couple schools in Chicago, which is where my family lives, so I'd be pretty happy with that as well.
