  1. OMG YES. I cannot stand it. Especially the "social justice warriors/SJWs" who say their purpose is to raise awareness and create dialogue but when anyway asks a question it's "educate yourself" and "its not my job to educate you". BUT YOU JUST SAID YOU WANTED TO CREATE DIALOGUE. I guess what they meant to say was, "I talk. You listen. End of discussion."
  2. I think there's a bit of a trend for more industry to head to Texas. I'm in Houston right now and when I interviewed at UT-Houston one of the admissions people said that the new CEO (or whatever his title is) of the Texas Medical Center is trying to attract more biotech firms to Houston. He wants Houston to become a hub for that like Boston/various CA cities are currently. I don't know if it will happen but it would be great if it did!
  3. I received my first offer! I'm going to grad school. I can't wait to start on the phd work.

Technically it's still unofficial I guess. Still waiting for funding information.

  4. EEEEEEE! First acceptance! I'm going to get a phd!

  6. UCLA probably has more connections to industry through your advisors and other professors. Isn't UCLA more highly ranked anyway? Are you looking for more bio tech direction or oil and gas?
  7. Agreed. There are a few good episodes. But the past several seasons have just been awful: lazy writing, tired jokes, no good story arcs.
  8. I need something to distract myself from this waiting game. If it wasn't so cold and wet outside I'd take my dog to the park (plus the whole being injured thing).

TED talks have gotten me through a couple anxious nights... maybe that'll work?

  9. I listed a few of the road races I've run on mine. During an interview I had one professor ask me about my running and how long I could run. He had recently taken his lab to run a 5k race in a nearby city because it was a fundraiser for the type of cancer his lab researches.
  10. I have a dog who loves his crate. He'll even sleep in it when I'm sitting at my desk (his crate is next to my desk). My mom actually will check on my dog for me while I am at work, and usually they just take naps together (she is retired, and the dog is just really lazy). My dog will spend plenty of time in his crate regardless of whether I'm home or not. Often times I will find him laying in it at all times of the day and night. Although if I'm in bed, he's right there laying at my feet.
  11. Eh, I'd just be like "can I have my chair back?" but I've been out of school and worked in the real world long enough to have my soul crushed by sh*tty people so I don't have the patience for passive-aggressive behavior. Too blunt? Fine.
  12. Yep. This waiting period is driving me insane. I still have one more interview but it would be nice to have an acceptance already in hand! (I've already interviewed at my top choices, and this other interview is my third choice).

  14. Thanks for letting me know! My other interviews have all been Thurs-Sat or Sun so this is just an odd-ball one in comparison to that.
  15. Has anyone had an interview on a Monday and Tuesday? It's at a university in the city I live in, so I thought maybe that was part of it? The other interviews I had seemed like a big weekend thing so this seems so...abrupt.

I will be 28 in October.
  17. Agreed. One school I applied to (sent the application the first week in Jan.) and I just received an interview invitation yesterday. Their deadline was something like Feb. 15th(not sure of the date, but mid-Feb sounds right). I have done several interviews (with my top 2 choice schools) but I haven't heard anything back from them yet. With the first choice school, it's only been a week post-interview so I'm not surprised. At this point this interview is a back up choice, but still has really interesting research so I would be happy attending there if I'm rejected from my other two schools.
  18. I think finding part time is going to be impossible, to be frank. You may consider looking at private institutions and ones affiliated with religion. I interviewed at Notre Dame a week or so ago, and they have child care facilities. At least it said so in the material they gave us. No one I interviewed with was a parent (or seemed to be in a relationship for that matter) so no one asked these questions.
  19. Sure thing. It's at University of Houston. I applied there kind of as a safety school but they do have interesting research, recently reached Tier 1 status and there's a lot of exciting changes going on campus-wise. It's not my first choice but I would definitely be happy there if I end up staying in Houston, and rejected from the other Houston-area schools. (I'm a Houston native).
  20. I don't have an acceptance yet but I have another interview. :/
  21. I just tried googling myself. A ton of results popped up, so good luck to any POIs trying to find me.

  23. I am waiting on UT Houston. The second interview weekend is now. And I heard they have one more in March. If you do a results search here on gradcafe, 2014 people didn't get acceptances until March. My other school I'm waiting to hear from said we'd here the first week of march at the earliest and I still keep compulsively checking my email anyway.
  24. I dreamed I got accepted to <first choice>. So of course I checked my email right away. Even though it's Saturday.
  25. My co-worker and my boss both have the surface pro 3. They LOVE it and use it all the time. I'm looking at getting one later this year, hopefully to use in grad school (still waiting for an acceptance).
