at least for folks like you (minneapolis campus), the number of ads now (and later as well) is quite large... so you shouldn't have much difficulty in finding a place. but there aren't that many posts in st paul area, which freaks me out. another plan i have is to contact the department, ask for email ids of other newcomers and see if all of us (new students) want to rent a house together, as we all will be looking for a place very soon. i am quite sure same thing can be worked out in your case as well.

hooray for the interview!! i am sure you will do fine. yes, both news in december were good news. i got into the programs of my choice, and will be making a decision shortly (they are saying they will send me offers this week). but i would also like to hear from rest of the schools because they took (a lot of) my time and money!

soooo sorry for you, Langoustine! i hope they are saving you for the second round. have you heard from other schools? looks like plant programs are taking forever!! i heard from two schools in december, and then zip! - no nothing from anywhere after that.

if you think the decision has been made and you haven't heard squat, i think contacting them would be fine... given that you have nothing lose at this point. who cares if they think!? but in all seriousness, it is/should be considered an inquiry and not nagging. not having heard doesn't always mean rejection, but who knows! i have my fingers crossed for you.. good luck!

First, how much $ or euros are we talking here? Also, try this - fly to Frankfurt first. I remember paying about 20 euros for this flight about 2 years ago. Then get tickets from big/cheap airlines that fly regularly from Frankfurt to the US. Few that come to my mind are Air India, Cathay Pacific, Delta, American Airlines and such. If flying directly to Minneapolis is expensive, choose other airports as your port of entry and then get another plane to take you to Minneapolis. Seattle, Denver, Milwaukee, Phoenix, Los Angeles, New York, etc all can be good options. I think I paid about 500$ to fly from Frankfurt to Denver in June (can't remember the airlines). Just keep looking.. you'll get a good deal.
