  1. One of my applications has a 1,000 word limit on the writing sample. I've decided to use an excerpt from my undergraduate seminar paper because its my best and most releavant work. Any advice on introducing the expert to put it in context? Should I admend my introduction or write an abscrat for it? This is my first year applying (MA programas) and first time doing this so any advice is apperciated.
  2. I totally want a part in this! lol I think alot of us would and since we are all broke due to app fees you could pay us very little and we'd all feel rich lol.

I had no idea about H-Net. Thanks for the awesome new resource
  7. Sorry for all the newbie questions but when are the test usually adminstered? At the interview stage, right before term starts etc? I am going to brush up on my french (thanks for the "reading for french" suggestion) and want to know how much time I have.
  8. Hi everyone, I have been out of school for approximately three years now and i'm in the process of applying to MA programs. I have been working to pay the bills in non-relevant jobs (mainly retail & admin support in law offices). I have heard that graduate programs like students with a little bit of real world experience but I am worried about making these last few years relevant. I done alot of personal growth and self discovery but I have also that graduate schools do not care about non-academic or non-related parts of your life,. Any advice? Especially from others like me.... Thanks!
  9. "I know so many disasspointed PhDs right now" I am an academic and probably insane since I think I will enjoy doing my PhD (not all of it, but becoming an expert in my field of interest) so this really bothers me. I will find a job one way or another, I am stubborn like that.,
  10. I would also recommend looking into BA to PhD programs if you haven't already since you get a masters along the way in the same program.
  11. Yes, I am going to be emailing them to make sure they are avabile and at least get my name out there. I figure if it does hurt my chances they are probably someone I do not want to work with in the first place.
  12. Thanks! I alreadly sent one asking how long they would like it and am hoping that they want to full thing. Also I am offering to send them any application materials they will find helpful.
  13. Hi Everyone, I am a noob (so sorry if this has been asked before). One of the most helpful pieces of advice so far is to send LoR writing samples to refresh their memories/demostrate your skills. My question is how long should these be? For the application itself one of my writing samples is approx 20 (what the program wants) but I am not sure that my LoR want to read a 20 page paper. How long should I aim to cut it down too? Thanks!
  14. So what about those of us who are native english speakers intrested in US history? I took french in college but was never great with it and would need to review alot.

    Portland, OR

I know I am late to this topic but as a Portland Resident I figured I should answer Portland is amazing (don't tell people outside this forum). It rains quite a bit, but keeps everything green. We have alot of culture (museums etc). It is a very politically active, foodie, liberal, beer snob sort of city. Great public transit, you really do not need a car (but a bike is a good idea). Like any big city, rent can be expensive so start looking fast.
  16. Thank you very much. I am interested in African American History, particularly racial relations and the civil rights movement (1860s-1960s). I am planning on email potential advisors to get a feel for them, but not sure what to say? Any advice on this?
  17. Hi Everyone, I am in the process of preparing & applying to MA programs in History. I know that finding the right advisor who is an expert in your area of interest is critical for PhD programs, I am wondering if this is the same for MA programs? The more professors I look at the smaller my list of schools is becoming. Is your advisor in your exact field? How did you go about picking potential adviors and do any of you who have been through this have any advice. I am starting the process a little late, so I am a little overwhelmed at the moment. Thanks in Advance
