  1. But is roomiematch.com a good place to look for roommates?
  2. Or even some undergraduate college fair (or graduate fair, if one such thing exists)?
  3. Simply put, I am inquiring about what does one have to do, as a grad student, in order to represent your university on the World Grad School Tour (if only for your home area) or some other event of that kind...
  4. I noticed that you applied only to schools in the South, with most of them in Texas; is your dream job in the South?
  5. I wonder how does one go on about getting a social security number if one will undertake a PhD under a F-1 visa and The SSN is important for a number of things while in the US with a stipend: taxes, liquor/driving licenses, banking and some university functions also. I realized, when I tried applying for a dorm (not the cheapest option at Minnesota, I know) that I couldn't apply for university housing despite having a student ID number there: it required a SSN.
  6. Just committed to Minnesota!

Watch Fargo to prepare for Twin Cities living.

Kapusta said that Minnesota had no trouble getting physics PhD applications from the Prairies (plus Lakehead) but they had trouble recruiting from the other Canadian regions (they usually get 0-1 application from non-Prairie schools and 2-3 from Prairie schools)...

  7. On my last visit, some quantum computing guy asked why there never were any applications to that school from my undergrad prior to this cycle...

  8. Stony Brook, although UPenn and Yale I would usually recommend for one that is more neutrino-inclined...
  9. Looks like I'm going to attend Minnesota...

Good luck! Buy a coat though...

Got rejected from UPenn and losing hope for Columbia; as for the coat, my current school is in a similarly cold area

  10. Wait until funding decisions arrive for the admittance you have before you walk away; you may provisionally accept the admit and, if you're denied funding, then you may walk away.
  11. Looks like my safeties all rejected me...

This happened to me last year also... just goes to show there are no "safeties"!

The weird thing was that my acceptances were sandwiched between rejections (as seen through the lens of USNWR for my field)

  12. I do not think prestige is overly important in early childhood education; pay grades often are determined by seniority and # of years (or level) of schooling, irrespective of the quality or prestige of the schooling you've got.
  13. Now co-advising an undergraduate capstone thesis...

That sounds kind of fun, actually. What is the topic?

That said, the undergraduate capstone thesis I'm co-advising is a continuation of that undergraduate summer internship; the topic is still related to some theoretical particle cosmology problem I'm also working on.

  14. All I can say at this point: get in touch with faculty at UBC...
  15. Got rejections high and low... with a Minnesota offer somewhere between my rejections

  16. They may talk to each other but, most of the time, who they would be talking to correlates with their research collaborations. Sorry if I necro-post...
  17. Now I wonder whether I will get in anywhere I applied to on my List of Happiness...

  18. I wonder why I didn't apply to Duke... knowing that the very real possibility of getting shut out of Ivies looms large, it drives me insane.
  19. If so, would that change have affected any desires for graduate education? I'll start: I almost contemplated changing majors for special education (back home, special education teachers need an undergrad in special ed to get licensed) and I wouldn't then have felt any need to go to an Ivy League school for graduate education; in fact, I wouldn't have gotten a graduate education at all.
  20. Ok, I acknowledge that I may have erred, but this is the only school for which I readily found demographic data detailed enough about admissions to actually suggest anything. I wonder whether NWU is that different from other peer schools (Rutgers, Brown, etc.) in some respects vis-à-vis international applicants to English programs...
  21. I neither gave school names, nor gave any indication to the DGS along the lines of "hey, other schools X, Y accepted me, so you should too" The bright side is that the third school didn't even start reviewing applications for my subfield.
  22. You would likely get a PhD doing semiconductor research if you go to Stony Brook...
  23. I emailed a school, asking for so that I could avoid scheduling conflicts with the schools I already am planning to go to for an open house, should I be admitted to that particular school. For this reason I volunteered the dates (but not the corresponding schools; to the staff's eyes, simply being invited to an open house would mean an offer was extended to me)... I wonder whether it was a good idea to volunteer the dates of my open house invitations - on one hand it could signal that I already have 2 offers and thus it could make me more attractive to profs there, on the other hand, the profs there would assume I would likely go elsewhere.
  24. So one would say that there is an oft-overlooked factor when looking at fit: your peers. Although in most fields, many, if not most programs, would rather admit the very best students they can than the more lackluster students that will likely accept their offer, for some reason, some low-end departments may put more weight on the likelihood of attendance than higher-end departments. But is the likelihood of attendance (if admitted) actually a factor in admissions? Are there fields where it is more of a factor than others?
