  1. RT @MrPooni: What privileged people like Matt Damon are thinking when they talk about "merit" http://t.co/KckKOnirVF
  2. RT @PPact: We agree with @SenWarren - we are not going back in time. #StandWithPP #S1881 http://t.co/3ZPSG8vfHs
  3. I agree with mildmannered in that the level of expectations as far as having studied the material and being engaged in discussions is much higher than undergrad. Based on my personal experience, the teaching style and work assigned is all depending on the professor. However, I've only had one so far that lectured...all the rest had a lot of class discussion, small group work, and some lecture. I had papers for all classes (sometimes several in one class), and if I had an exam there were always essay questions or short answer questions on them. As far as how much time I spent on assignments, I would say that it was a lot. I can't give a specific number but there were many weekends I didn't leave my house because I was reading and writing papers. I think once you get to know a professor's expectations you'll know which classes you may not have to do all the readings for versus the ones you absolutely do have to read for. Just to be safe, when I first started the program I did pretty much all readings during the first semester because I didn't know how the exams would be, etc. and it worked out for me.
  4. I applied to USC's MSW program by the early decision deadline and did not get my acceptance until February. If you wait to hear back before applying to other schools, you should definitely at least get started on those applications before your decision comes in. Also, other schools might have rolling admission, so spots may be taken up at other schools as you wait to hear back from USC. This admission process is something you'd want to research of any other schools you're interested in to see if that's the case. The only way in which your financial aid would be affected is if you didn't list any schools besides USC on your FAFSA, because then only they would get your information and be able to come up with a package for you. But, if you plan to list multiple schools, then your financial aid will not be affected because you applied to multiple schools.
  5. CSULB- Tuition is between 15-16,000 in TOTAL. I believe all CSUs are around this range. Private schools such as: USC - 47,129/yr (93k total) NYU- 38, 297/yr (76.5k total)
  6. Sociology major, 3.1 Cum GPA 2 years of AmeriCorps service with youth in South LA 2 years mentoring youth and doing a variety of service work in urban communities I decided to decline the offer for the 3-year program and let them know yesterday. I'm really set on getting my MSW in 2 years, and overall CSULA will be a more convenient option for me.
  7. I just got the email as well!! Admission to the 3 year program.
  8. Congratulations! What concentration were you admitted to?
  9. At CSULB's information session, we were told that they were in the stages of redesigning the curriculum and concentrations (I think the fall 2014 classes are actually online now, though, or maybe that's just BSW). Students will no longer have to declare their concentration at the start of the program, but will choose toward the end of fall semester. We will also not be required to do a thesis, and instead can choose to do either a thesis or a capstone project...like a community project with a research paper. From what I sensed, it wasn't so much that it's less organized and structured, but more like this year is going to be like a trial run for the program redesigns. They really did emphasize that students should apply to the program if they wouldn't mind being a part of that process and working with them to improve upon any changes, if needed. Again, this is just what I got from it.
  10. Seems this page doesn't really mean much since I was accepted a few weeks ago but my CSULA GET page still has a yellow triangle. I believe it stays there until they've gotten all your official transcripts and such (if you're still attending school or completing a pre-req).
  11. Amante3, I also received this scholarship when I was accepted to USC. However, I had also applied to another endowed scholarship and called USC shortly after being accepted to ask when I would be hearing back about that one. I was told that they would not evaluate applications for these scholarships until mid-April after all students have been accepted. I'm not sure if this applies to all scholarships!
  12. Same as elbimbo, I applied on November 15th and heard back February 10th!
  13. Thanks! I applied on 11/18 and the acceptance came via mail in a large manila envelope. Good luck, and hope you hear something soon!
  14. Just got my acceptance today to the CYWF concentration at CSULA!! I was totally not expecting it anytime soon!
  15. I applied on January 24th. Thanks! Good luck to you as well.
  16. Just received my pending status...Here's to more waiting! I'm just glad I'm not completely rejected yet! Haha
  17. Oh man.. I applied to CSULB on January 24th and haven't heard anything back aside from a confirmation they received my app. I'm getting nervous!
  18. Once you sign in with your CIN and PIN click on Self-Service, then Student Center and it should be at the bottom of the page. That's weird! Not sure what happened there...
  19. For those who've applied to CSULA...on the CSULA GET page, do you all have a yellow triangle="incomplete", or does it say "complete"? Mine was complete before, but now it's incomplete. I'm not sure if this changed because my app is being reviewed or what... Anybody see the same thing?
  20. Can I ask what led you to pursue social work? Do you genuinely enjoy the profession and feel like you possess skills to be good at it if it wasn't for your anxiety? As someone who has had to work through anxiety in the past, you're most likely afraid of the internship and perceive yourself to not be good because of the anxiety you get. Your anxiety might come out during your internship and affects the work you're doing, which enables you to confirm to yourself that you're not good, which just continues the cycle. What you need to do is find a way to work past the anxiety to see if social work really is the profession for you. In my opinion, until you do work past it, you may not be able to see things clearly and really assess where your interests lie. Social anxiety has to do with having irrational, over-exaggerated fears so I would perceive an issue to be bigger and scarier than it actually was and talking to a therapist helped me come up with coping strategies that I still use to this day to stop me in my tracks when I catch myself thinking that way. If you need someone to talk with, please feel free to message me. I am all ears.
  21. I would really love to get into Long Beach! CSUF is also a top contender, however...
  22. I was admitted last week! I'm still waiting to hear back on other schools as well.
  23. How were you notified? May I also ask when you applied?? Thanks!!
  24. I'm planning on accepting and paying the deposit, because if I don't get accepted elsewhere I will have my spot. If I get accepted to another school that's a lot cheaper, then in the long run the deposit is nothing compared to the thousands of dollars you'll save! Just my thought...I always expect the worst in any situation so I'm saving my spot! lol
