  1. I am not sure if the government shutdown played a role, since it only affected the US State Dept. and IEE committee for two days (Oct. 1-16, application site for Fulbright US student scholars closed in Oct. 15). The timeline for the recommended/rejected status for the 2013-2014 also had the same deadline for Jan. 31st notifications, but got notified beforehand. I guess we will have to wait and see, there is no reason to get worked up right now or stressed out even though I really wish it would happen tomorrow like most of you.
  2. I vote on patiently waiting one more day and see what happens. I don't think it is necessary to call them at this point since it's not like notifications are "late" or something. I could see it more beneficial next week since by then it would be abnormal based on previous year notifications.
  3. I am still hoping to get notified by the end of this week like previous years, if not I'll blame it on last years gov'mnt shutdown.
  4. Hello I think you might qualify in the Scholar Research Program for Fulbright depending on how many years you have been working. Here is some more information on the differences: Opportunities for Scholars, Artists and Professionals (Scholar Fulbright Program) The Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program offers opportunities for American scholars, artists and professionals to conduct research, lecture, and/or consult with other scholars and institutions abroad. The Fulbright Visiting Scholar Program offers opportunities for foreign scholars, artists and professionals to conduct post-doctoral research and/or lecture in the U.S. - See more at: http://eca.state.gov/fulbright/fulbright-programs/program-summaries/scholar-program#sthash.UXgRsz3T.dpuf Opportunities for U.S. Students, Artists and Young Professionals Fulbright U.S. Student Program More than 1,500 Americans receive grants to study, research or teach abroad with full or partial support from the Fulbright Program. The Fulbright U.S. Student Program offers fellowships for U.S. graduating college seniors, graduate students, young professionals and artists to study, conduct research, and/or teach English abroad. In addition, Critical Language Enhancement Awards are available to grantees for study of critical need foreign languages before or during their grant period. - See more at: http://eca.state.gov/fulbright/fulbright-programs/program-summaries/student-program#sthash.O7aL06OG.dpuf
  5. I was asking myself that too lol. It wasn't like that when I closed my browser hmm I might play around with it.
  6. Hi everyone, I just did some changes in the spreadsheet. Before I edited, the spreadsheet was split in two ABC lists, make sure if you're going to add your information you submit it in the correct order by "adding" a cell above or below the rows based on your host countries name. Thanks!
  7. Based on previous years, it's always been mid January when they send the first batch of notifications. I think the Fulbright "rule of thumb" is that applicants have to know by the end of this month, which is on the fulbright website's timeline, and possibly what your FPA is referring to. It is possible that since you e-mailed him or her that they are just giving a generic answer. I was also under the impression that sometimes FPA's find out sooner, and sometimes later. I have read in previous threads that some FPAs give a hint to their applicants, and other posts have mentioned that the FPA's e-mail the applicants to find out if they got in or not since they were not notified at the same time as them. I am guessing it varies by their personal involvement in Fulbright organization, since I know they have regional committees of some sort and maybe those who are higher up and are FPAs get to hear the news sooner than applicants and other FPAs, but this is just what I am assuming. I do find it weird that some FPAs find out sooner, at the same time, or sometimes later, than the applicants. I don't know if someone else would like to ask their campus FPA, I am guessing my FPA would just tell me that I would find out sooner or later.
  8. I was very fortunate enough to have a great FPA. She was in contact with me the whole year leading up to the application, and was always willing to meet with me and answer any of my questions or concerns. I really grew fond of her as a professor and as an advisor/mentor (even though she is from the opposite spectrum of my field of study). I think a good FPA advisor gives constructive feedback and genuinely cares for you to succeed in your fulbright application. I had others helping me in the process who were more critical, and essentially helped me, but I think the support the FPA had in my school was truly great compared to other reviewers who helped me in the application process. I remember when I stepped into the interview room and all the other council members were there listening to me and she was just so pumped up and excited for me to explain my project and she was eagerly looking around the room and seeing the others faces with such excitement. Awie, now I am getting a little sappy, but she was truly a jewel and extremely helpful. She might be more bummed out than me if I don't get it. But at least she got a great review on the survey!
  9. Hi Mojodreams, I think it would be difficult for them to identify us since it seems like the link leads to just some random survey website. I doubt this survey will influence the results since those final decisions were made about a month ago. I would answer it truthfully, I think Fulbright needs to know which FPA are useful to students interested in this great opportunity. I am sure that they receive some sort of perk for being a Fulbright advisor on campus, might as well be truthful.
  10. They did the survey last year too but it was close to the holidays. I was expecting to see it during the holiday break and when I didn't I completely forgot about it until now...
  11. My heart strings almost ripped when I saw that damn survey. Gotta be shittin' me.
  12. I am back in the States therefore back to the waiting game reality. The only thing that consoles me is that I will be very busy the next coming weeks with work and school, blegh.
  13. I applied to a Fulbright after I got into Gradschool so I can have more experience in research and theory since I am required to take courses in the host country. I also got extra support and resources in filling out my application which I think was beneficial than if I had applied before graduate school.
  14. I think the general consensus (judging from previous years) is that we will be notified in two weeks or so. In the mean time, good luck to everyone! Sending good vibes and thoughts!
  15. From previous threads, it seems that the Fulbright campus advisors find out at the same time or after the applicants.
  16. Just to clarify I think the orignial poster is referring to the Full Research grant which no one should know until the second, third week of January. Bluefit applied to a Scholar Full Research grant which is different
  17. I really don't know why the Fulbright Commission would be interested in opening up an e-mail with screenshots of one of the thousands of applicants and then make a decision based on this person's opinion or "evidence" of you. I think you should also consider who is this "someone" (a professor, fellow peer, ex-girlfriend) do they even have the power to make their e-mail come across as important? I am sure you're not the first one or will be the last one who faces this type of situation. I really wouldn't worry about it too much but I would definitely involve some sort of law enforcement or campus police in this situation because what's happening to you is illegal.
  18. Hi Anahid, thanks for your encouraging words, we'll just have to see what happens. You're right on trying to do everything you can.
  19. Two days ago I went to the host country's fulbright requirement pages and I noticed that they changed a requirement section. I am afraid that means someone read my application and said "oh no, we should note this is not possible" and updated the requirements. To make my story short I am interested in children's psychosocial development in areas of conflict and violence, and how the use of intervention programs help. I was interested in this specific city due to it's varying levels of violence in certain neighborhoods. There was a restriction section in the Fulbright page of the country's mentioning that research applications targeting rural areas will not be accepted due to the organic nature of the security there. Before I started doing my application, I e-mailed the Western Hemisphere representative to ask about any issues in doing research in this specific city, which she replied there were none at the moment. The other day I checked back and I saw that they added more than just rural parts of the country, including "section of urban areas" and "certain cities or towns." Talk about feeling bummed out. I was trying to prevent my application from being excluded because of the restriction section but it seems like they decided to change the requirements for it after the deadline. Bleh.
  20. Hi Bluefit, as far as the Full Grant award goes, I know they send at least a bit over half of the allotted grants. For example, I am interested in Colombia which accept about 6 students per year for the Full Grant. The Fulbright committee in the US would send 10-12 projects to the Colombian government to review. So in essence, they do send a couple more applications to the host country but your probability of getting it, or becoming an alternative increases to about 40-50% in this phase versus 16% in the first phase when your application is being reviewed with the rest of the USA applicants interested in that same country (in this case these statistics are derived from the Colombia, Full Grant page). I know the UK is more competitive for ETAs and Full Grants, I am unsure about the Scholar Grant but I am guessing if you have been recommended, you're very close to getting awarded, unless for some reason the country does not see fit. I think that's why they request people to send verification paperwork to double check from the US part, knowing that the transcripts are good. Previous Fulbright threads have also mentioned that in phase 2 the host country has the final say on who goes. I am guessing this is when the host university or organization letter comes into play and lets the host country know how much other people from there are interested/invested in you to go. This depends from country to country though, since some countries during phase 2 also find university or organization placements for recommended applicants from the US.
  21. There usually the second or third week of January for most of the countries.
  22. I feel you, I am trying to not think of this right now but then I get small panic attacks of what is currently going on in DC now that they are reviewing the applications. I do not want to be a ball of stress that second, third week of January...
  23. Bluefit, I really would like to be studying abroad! I am currently not, but I certainly would love to be. I am stuck in Texas in the mean time, hehe
  24. Hejduk, my response was towards those who applied for the same country as Bluefit (the UK) but had not heard anything from Fulbright (bar_scene_gambler, and bbnh). Unlike Bluefit, they applied for the ETA or Full Grant awards in the UK, not the Scholar award that Bluefit already received notification. I understand that Scholar grants get notified beforehand and vary from country to country (just like the student awards). My previous post was in regards to those who applied to the same location as Bluefit.
  25. I have a proposal and thesis to write in the mean time...I will also be in Spain and France for a month this coming December so I won't have to think about Fulbright until January 9th (thank goodness). I am also looking into possibly studying abroad through my department in Iceland in case Fulbright falls through. It's hard, but I am trying to stay as realistic as possible and not put all my eggs in one basket. I want to have something to look forward to if things don't work out hehe..
