  1. I have not heard from UChicago (Health Studies), but someone on another thread already set up an interview for biostats in that department, so I'm assuming it's a 'no' at this point.
  2. When and how did you hear back?
  3. I wish I'd gotten a minor in biochemistry. Does that count?
  4. Did anyone apply to University of Chicago Health Studies (epidemiology and biostats are specialities within the program)?
  5. Leaving my current job (research specialist at a major research university) in a few months to spend three months working in land conservation. Thought it couldn't hurt to get some big-picture biology before delving into molecular for the rest of forever.
  6. Were they presenting this as a, "No one working with malaria can work with you," statement, or as a hypothetical, "what if" statement? That doesn't sound like an implausible interview question - if you attended their program but none of the professors working in malaria had funding that year, would you have a backup plan or would you end up dropping out/transferring?
  7. Over the past year, there has been an average of one school shooting every other day (admittidly, at all schools, not just universities). What this suggests to me, beside the fact the U.S. has a serious problem with violence and gun control, is that location/campus is irrelevant. This things can happen to anyone, anywhere. I didn't apply to Purdue, but if I had, it would have zero impact on my decision.
  8. Check the Public Health forums - there is a whole thread devoted to PhD programs in epidemiology.
  9. Has anyone heard from UChicago Biostats (under the Health Studies cluster)?
  10. What?? No! Why would you leave behind the best-ever state??
  11. Best advice: the GRE is a small, small portion of your application. Strong letters of recommendation, work experieince, GPA, etc, are going to mean so much more.
  12. Accepted at UIC for Epidemiology.
  13. No, I didn't, but from other posts/results search, people from the master's program in Epi Microbial Diseases have started hearing back. I would assume this means PhD interviews are close to being announced. You might try the biology forums - a lot of PhDs post there, and microbial disease is something of a crossover.
  14. You should e-mail some of the professors in the programs, especially ones you might be interested in working with. Get a sense from your conversation of what the community is like, etc. You could also request to be be put in touch with some current students/recent alumni. They'll be able to tell you much more information about the pros/cons of a program than a PR website.
  15. Got my official admissions package from BU. With the merit awad of $12K (non-repeating, of course), that brings the total tuition down from $84,800 to $72,800 - plus living costs in one of the country's most expensive cities.
  16. Do you have the link?
  17. I'd be interested to hear how that turns out. The REU I did as an undergraduate offered seminars on applying to graduate school. In one of those, they told us their university's application policy was, if you have zero research experieince, your app gets tossed without being read, regardless of GPA/GRE/etc. Even if you can think critically, you have no idea whether you could actually be happy in a laboratory environment. Wondering if that's true for other unviersities as well.
  18. Forged stuff? Why would there be motivation to add forged stuff?
  19. Unless it's an error on their end in that they updated the website before they officially send out your acceptance???? Crossing my fingers for you!
  20. I just got rejected (via postal service) by the U of Minnesota Epi department. Considering a.) I was already accepted to the environmental science department b.) did not apply to th epi department, I cannot consider myself very disheartened by this setback.
  21. I'm not seeing those. Whenever it's mentioned, it's in quotes or indicates that mail is GOING to come. I'm not worried - the initial e-mail said mid-January, which means that's probably when they'll start sending stuff out. Also, I'm highly suspicious "package" includes anythign but brochures and how to accept. I do not expect much financial aid.
  22. I had one stats class with a good grade, a functions (pre-calc) class with a so-so grade, and a calc class from which I withdrew and I was accepted to the epi program at my top choice. However, I do use a lot of stats in my current job and have research experience. Don't let your lack of actual math classes stop you from applying anywhere, especially since you do have that research background, but as the above post says, check program requirements. It wouldn't hurt you to take a calc class if you still have time. And, if biostats is the route you want to go, you're DEFINITELY going to need more math.
  23. All I've received is the initial acceptance e-mail.
  24. I'm terrified to ask this question because I'm afraid the question will be "yes," but, lurkers: has anyone heard from the Health Studies department at the University of Chicago? In past years, it looks like interview invites went out anytime between early January and mid-February.
