I'm not sure that "great" really applies to those programs. Decent programs, yes. Some of those places you mention have dismal placement records, and only a few strengths. I'm not knocking these programs at all, I wouldn't mind going to Iowa myself one day, but I just don't see them as being "great" programs.
I know that there are a few "Pluralist" departments that have decent placement, like Stony Brook, that aren't mentioned on the top 50 of the PGR. But I think a lot of schools that aren't on the top 50 PGR are pretty bad as well.
I can't believe I'm saying this, but I 100% agree with the vineyard here. The PGR has a lot of problems, but Leiter just moving people up the list in exchange for speaking fees is absolutely absurd.
And maybe a PGR debate thread would be alright!
I have confirmation that Umass have finished their first round but just haven't released them yet. Also the majority of their strongest candidates already have MA's apparently. I don't know however, when they will email/call people.
Traffic sucks but it's a fairly nice place. Some great food (surprisingly Asian food) if you hunt around a bit. Good luck with getting off that waitlist!
I'm tired of us always having these crazy arguments and whatnot in other threads, and whatever so I thought we needed a lighthearted thread again to just not be serious in. Please don't argue here unless it's facetiously!
Anyway, here is how I've been currently with only bad news coming across and nothing good:
I already have bad anxiety in normal situations. This waiting for grad school stuff makes it waaaay worse! Uuuugh Tech if you are reading this please Admit me, I love you all and I will be the best student and TA ever!
