  1. That's where I grabbed it from
  2. I thought the winky face would make it clear I was being facetious. As per philosophy, I'm fond of Husserl who is claimed more so on the continental tradition. The zizek reference is because I made the username on reddit when /r/philosophy was basically /r/zizek.
  3. Alva Noe is SUPER cool, and I know who one or two of those other names are. I think most people who do analytic philosophy are cool with the work these types of people do, but they might be like me and not super interested in it specifically. Someone on the continental side is going to have to say what their attitude is to it, it might be too empirical and objective for them to really understand though .
  4. Hey but we did have some guy go crazy and show that rape culture is alive and well, so there's that!
  5. That's all I can think about with this, but it's not hard at all to write something better than that.
  6. Someone posted this on another site and I just had to repost here!
  7. I work at a university and we're totally open tomorrow.
  8. I think you're exactly right! People here need to calm down, there is a lot of time left before emailing departments seem appropriate. We all just need to bunker down and start waiting it out and acting like adults in this situation, and not get angry at departments for not kneeling to our every whim and fancy.
  9. This guy/girl is completely right! We still have a long time left, those absolutely despairing, pessimism is okay but not total despair!
  10. Someone here claimed an acceptance, so those look legit despite no info. The rejection? A bit fishy.
  11. Thanks! I haven't heard back from UVA but I would love to go there, and you doing that made it one person easier! Good luck with the rest of your applications.
  12. I feel you. Another school of mine, still without any word. Well at least I haven't been rejected yet!
  13. Sadly this is the correct answer.
  14. It's even worse with the silence of noooothing - I feel your pain!
  15. Once again another school I didn't apply too!
  16. I know a guy there. If by climate you mean climate for women I don't know about that, but in general philosophy he seems to enjoy it and it's a supportive community, albeit one that knows that getting jobs for successful students is extremely hard, even in the context of philosophy jobs. He's said good things about the department to me for sure. PM if you want his info.
  17. It's a snow day today (and possibly tomorrow) from work... I literally have nothing to do today, and this wait is going to be excruciating!!!
  18. oops I tried to upvote this but I think I accidentally downvoted. Dunno why.
  19. Thanks! I'll be honest, it's one of the MAs, but still I would be extremely excited to attend there. Also I know UVA probably hasn't sent out waitlists yet, as I know a bit about the department (my undergrad and theirs are a bit close) they send out Jefferson fellowship students first, then regular admits, then wait-lists, and then rejections. Normally they make it into the wait-lists a bit. So far we've only seen Jefferson from them, so I would except the rest to come by the end of February.
  20. Congrats to all you people! I still haven't heard anything at all, and it's hard to contain this much longer. But I know a student at one of the schools I applied too (we went to undergrad together) and someone asked him about me apparently, so I have high hopes that I won't be completely shut out!
  21. Haha. My program was very much contemporary based. Except for two low-level courses in history there were no further historical classes offered, and everything was 'issue based' and we read recent work on those issues, only sometimes reading older works related to them. So there wasn't really any place for Nietzsche or Heideggar. In terms of preparing students for graduate study at most grad schools, this is the way to do it, so I see why. Personally I wish there was more history there, but more Hume and Aristotle.
  22. Waking up to this thread:
  23. Don't. The readers of Leiter are dominantly analytic. As someone with a largely analytic background, it's commonsense to rate Moore over Heidegger. Moore started a lot of the debates that I talk about, and Heidegger didn't really contribute to any of the areas I talk about. Same goes for Mill and Frege over Nietzsche. Frege pretty much started formal logic, phil of language, and debates about meaning and influenced Wittgenstein and Russell and others to work on those problems which lead to much of the philosophy done in the english speaking world today. Nietzsche, while interesting, didn't do that. In fact in my entire undergraduate career I read Frege, Moore and Mill, but never Nietzsche or Heidegger. I only know about those figures because of the internet. So don't despair, just realize that most of the people who voted do philosophy differently than you do, and so their figures are different.
