  1. Mad Men isn't about advertising, it's about people who happen to do advertising. The people and their lives is what the show is mostly about. That said, it's a pretty good show, but I haven't watched all of it, I've heard the quality has dropped recently (or is it over?). But yeah, if you haven't seen the Sopranos or the Wire, watch those for sure. Also 30 rock for comedy.
  2. This guy gets it! Popular shows? I don't know whats popular and what's hipstery. What do you like, comedy, drama, both? I'm still somewhat behind the times, but there are some great comedies on FX(x) like the League, Archer, Louie, Always Sunny in Philidephia. As for dramas, there's always Mad Men, Breaking Bad, Homeland, Boardwalk Empire, - if you like Zombies apparently the walking dead is really good, but I never got into that. Netflix dramas like Lilyhammer, House of Cards, and Orange is the New Black are all really good as well. I dunno if what I said is popular or not, but its what most of my friends/classmates seem to talk about. But maybe I hang out with hipsters, I dunno.
  3. I love the Wire. It also doesn't hurt that I grew up nearish Baltimore, and visited it a decent amount when I was younger. (Damn, I want a laketrout sammich with hot sauce right now)
  4. Homeland is a pretty good show, i just found out. Man I'm like years behind on good tv... Well, nows a good time to catch up. Anything to make the time go faster.
  5. Writing sample for sure. I think all my application should be strong except for my low quantative GRE scores, and possibly 1 not super strong letter. But when my advisor read the first draft of my sample, for an independent study with it, he instantly gave me an A and told me it was one of the best papers he's ever seen written by an undergrad. Since then, I've revised the paper a lot, but the argument/shape of the paper is still generally the same. Other professors have been less enthuastic, though they all agree that it's a very good sample.
  6. Congrats you lucky bastard, especially hearing back so early! And yeah - no arguments in this thread! -
  7. I'm hoping for USC, california would be great. Otherwise I really don't have a preference, it's really the programs + funding I will consider. Not that it really matters, I don't expect I will have many choices lol.
  8. Woah look who is back. Hi Dfindley! Let's hope we all can keep discussion civil and focused on graduate applications in philosophy this time.
  9. why would a snowstorm affect the online thing? And I dunno man - I'm not applying there, but I hope it works out for you!
  10. Just incase anyone else is applying there and wants to know what happened: "Yes, the Department of Philosophy doesn't require the official transcript from the applicants until they receive an offer of admission. The Graduate Admissions website states the general rule for applications, but each department can change this requirement to fit their needs. So, there is no need for you to mail your official transcript until you are asked to do so."
  11. Hey 3 long seasons of Game of Thrones will be a good distraction from grad application madness...
  12. It feels a lot colder when it was 25 degrees higher just hours ago.
  13. Shit, I need to email some places and make sure my transcripts made it. I'm not snowed in, but it's flippin cold (went from being 50 this morning to freezing right now). Also Johns Hopkins hasn't emailed me back yet about their transcripts contradiction debacle. God I hate this finished applying but not sure if apps are completed feeling...
  14. Or we might just *now* have realized we don't have the scores/stuff to make it into a good program and have wasted a lot of money. At least in my case.
  15. My friend interested in early Christianity/Paul has to learn Greek, Hebrew, Latin, Aramaic, and German (because tons of religious research is done in German apparently) But he only needs reading level in these, so its not a HUGE deal.
  16. So, I sent an email to the graduate admissions philosophy person, and it sent back and email referencing being out of the office in October 2013. Umm... I don't know if this means the person hasn't been in the office since then, or just doesn't realize this automatic reply is on...
  17. Most of the schools I applied to as well didn't need official transcripts, though they wanted scans of official ones a lot of time. But some did, like USC, Miami and U-Mass Amherst. Just follow directions on the grad admissions stuff. The only one that confuses me is Johns Hopkins, because the grad-admissions page and the philosophy-admission page contradict each other.
  18. doubtful. I mean, it wouldn't surprise me if the guy was like 'NYU LOVED MY BOOK THEY GIVE ME $1000000 A MONTH" but if he did anything, 100% his name would be on it.
  19. Thanks. Also, I like that you actually got accepted. I hope that happens to me!
  20. I really hope that's true, I think I have a chance there, and I don't want my application to go to waste!
  21. Hey, but at least our trolls are interesting. Sometimes... Yo, seriously, this!!!!
  22. Hey Guys, I was just going over something with Johns Hopkins, and on the graduate philosophy website they say this: "Transcripts: Unofficial transcripts must be uploaded through the online application. Applications will be ready for review with unofficial transcripts, but official transcripts will be required if an offer of admission is made" However, on the Johns Hopkins Graduate School Webpage it says: "In addition to uploading unofficial transcripts, all applicants are also required to submit official transcripts of all college and university study in sealed envelopes, or via third party electronic distributers such as Scrip-Safe, WES, or Interfolio. Official transcripts must be received by the departmental admissions deadline." Like, I dunno if I can get all my transcripts in in time now, because I was listening to what the philosophy department says and wasn't sending in officials unless I was admitted. Of course, I just sent the philosophy department an email, but I don't know what to do now, I already submitted the application and I don't want to be late. So, freaking out a bit now...
  23. I was like "shit already" then I looked, and with those GRE/Grade scores yeah, obvious trolling!
