  1. I think it's 100% okay. You are employed - you're just employed as a contractor. People in the US in many fields (often in comp. sci.) work as contractors and list the experience on CVs/resumes/applications. You can make a note in each listing under the "Employment Experience" section that the jobs were contract jobs if desired.
  2. This happened to me. I had an interview weekend and a recruitment weekend at the same time. I had already accepted one invitation when I received the second one. Luckily, the one I had already committed to was my preferred program. I told the other program that I had a prior engagement and that their proposed dates did not work for me, but I still wanted to visit. They were fine with it, and we worked out an alternate set of dates (basically, immediately after I was back from the first visit). It was a bit odd since I was the only prospective student there, but it was worth doing. TL;DR - Prioritize. And you might be able to visit both anyway.
  3. When I applied, I used it to "rule out" schools. It was useful (to me) to know which places I could let go of/no longer be concerned with. True - anything can happen and you might get an interview later. But for me, once I knew invites and/or offers were out, it was helpful to know I could stop being concerned with that program. So that might be part of it.
  4. Yea, we still have quite a ways to go.
  5. I'll send you a PM.
  6. I can't speak for other programs, but I know where I'm at we had a record number of applicants this year (seems to happen every year, doesn't it?). It seems like each year gets more and more competitive. To this year's applicants: Don't freak out. That just means you're that much more fantastic. Best of luck to you all.
  7. This! Also, it has the added benefit of the whole "event" lasting a bit longer. I'm very glad we've delayed our honeymoon.
  8. I got married this past October. It was out-of-state from my program, so I did end up missing 1 week of class (first year in a PhD program). I told all the profs at the beginning of the semester and no one had a problem with it. I knew it was coming, so I was able to work to stay on-top of things. Honeymoon is on hold momentarily - we're taking one for 2 weeks this May after classes end because I did not want to take more time off. The planning, etc. is daunting, but doable.I was lucky and didn't have classes on Monday, so we still had a period of Sunday-Monday after a Saturday wedding to spend time together and absorb everything. The planning, etc. is daunting, but doable. I agreed to the fall date because I wasn't "in" grad school yet (hadn't been admitted) and didn't know what would happen. Frankly, I assumed I wouldn't get in. The world is funny. Also, congratulations.
  9. It's always tough to go back. I am fighting a nasty cold I caught from my spouse (yay), and today is my first day of classes. Wish me luck.
  10. You're very welcome! Sorry I couldn't be of more help, I lack personal field experience (I'm a first year) at the moment.
  11. A Starbucks gift card could also work/be appreciated.
  12. The reason I asked is that I was going to suggest looking into a research-oriented career (you can do applied research if you don't want to go into academia), but generally that requires a PhD. There may be positions that are open to MS/MA holders, though. Check out the SIOP website and look at Master's-level job openings and see if anything there appeals to you. I'm also going to recommend you possibly post your question to https://www.reddit.com/r/IOPsychology/- there are quite a few professionals there who may be able to better answer your question about personality. For what it's worth, I am consider myself rather introverted and do plan to go applied. In my program, there is an array of personalities - just like you'd expect to see anywhere else.
  13. Semi-relevant: Are you thinking the Master's or PhD route?
  14. Oh man, sorry for the false alarm, lol.
  15. I think my earliest contact for a phone interview was mid-January, but I definitely heard from some later than that. Are you going for PhDs or Masters? I applied to all PhDs and had phone interviews with everywhere I interviewed at formally/was accepted. Some places don't interview at all, though. I didn't apply to any of those programs it seems. If you'd like specifics, feel free to PM me.
  16. Both are possible. Most POIs emailed me ahead of time to schedule a phone call, but I did have one just call me randomly. Also, one of the scheduled calls accidentally called me an hour early! lol So be ready, but I'd say the norm is to schedule. Especially if they know you're international, I doubt a prof wants to risk calling you at 2am.
  17. I saw the following on reddit today: Reddit, TIFU Like 5 minutes ago I am applying to grad school this year, mostly schools in Europe. I had emailed the admissions coordinator of a place asking if they would accept electronic transcripts. She replied today morning saying they don't, and I would have to send a paper copy by post. I started composing a reply, saying thank you and that I would arrange for a copy to be sent ASAP. My friend also sent me an email this morning, with pictures of his holiday in Thailand, and asking me if I could check his apartment if it hasn't been robbed and everything's still there (WTF?) I decided to a send him a reply too. You can see where this is going. There was a mix up. I sent my grad school admissions coordination "bitch you be trippin balls, I aint gonna do none of that shit" Source: https://www.reddit.com/r/tifu/comments/2re0is/tifu_by_inadvertently_sending_an_offensive_email/ Since it was amusing (and unfortunate), I thought I'd ask any other application survivors to share application horror stories. Did you/the involved parties survive the event?
  18. Well it's January, and no one has posted about received disqualification emails... that's probably a good sign. Good luck with the waiting, all.
  19. Figure out who you'll be meeting with if possible. Read some of their research/familiarize yourself with their work. They aren't going to quiz you on their publications or anything, but it helps to know who you are talking to, what they have already done, and where their research is going.
  20. Anyone else traveling this weekend/week? Stay safe!

Same to you! I'm flying out on Sunday, so I guess we won't cross paths at the airport. lol

  21. Several of my peers entered our program with children. I don't think this will be a problem for you in terms of interview/acceptances.
  22. This varies by program, but I think that research experience/fit is the most important thing professors are looking for. That said, your GPA will be a hurdle. Make sure you reach out to potential professors you want to work with ahead of time and establish connections with them before applications are due. Cast a wide net, and apply to as many schools as you can afford and have an genuine interest in attending - don't cap yourself based on geography. In the mean time, make the most of your time and push your GPA up as much as possible. Work on getting a publication and/or poster. The internship is a plus and a good thing to do, but if you're aiming for a PhD program, research is going to be the focus more-so than industry experience so put your energy there. (Spoiler: my GPA was not high either [but high GREs], and extensive research experience helped me overcome that.)
  23. Hey dude. You might want to make your own thread for this - your question will probably get more attention that way. This thread is for I/O applicants applying for admission this round. ... In fact, I imagine many of them have apps due today.
  24. Personally, I'd be afraid of drawing their attention to it... but ultimately it's up to you.
  25. First semester down. What a year. Interviews, decisions, cross-country move, my wedding, and two fellowship applications. Phew!
