  1. Hi all! I just accepted my offer this morning. I am also trying to find housing now (not an easy task!) My mom just moved to Memphis so I will probably fly down to visit her, then take a weekend over in Nashville to drive around and look for an apartment. I would love to be in a neighborhood around campus, but I'm just not sure if there are affordable options!
  2. I'll admit it would be easier to go the courthouse or destination route, but being from the Midwest it is almost impossible to have a small wedding. My fiance and I grew up in the same town, have tons of mutual friends, and are both really close to our huge families. Luckily, my cousin is a wedding planner, so if I end up doing my PhD out-of-state she will hopefully take care of most of the work for me!
  3. Thanks for sharing your stories everyone! It's great to see that people can work in their social lives and relationships around their program. Although I absolutely love my field, I feel like that's the only way I'd stay sane!
  4. My fiance and I have been in a long distance situation for almost our entire relationship. I went out-of-state for undergrad (about 3 hours away, so not horrible) and then he joined the Marine Corps, which has put him on both coasts for the past year. Now that I am waiting for grad school decisions, it's pretty hard to decide where I should go (assuming I get accepted). I did apply to schools in two cities that he could be stationed in, but most of the programs are located elsewhere. He of course wants me to choose the best program fit for myself, as do I, but it's still a big decision with lots of things to consider. I am okay with staying long distance for now, as he agreed to move to wherever I end up once his contract with the Marines is up. We will figure it out though, as will you, OP! Everyone's situation is different, and everyone has their own ideas of what is most important to them.
  5. Personally, I just can't wait 5+ years to get married!
  6. Thanks for the input everyone! To clarify: I guess I didn't mean "taking time off," but more like taking a long weekend to have the ceremony. Having a winter break honeymoon is a great idea shadowclaw! Luckily, my cousin is a wedding planner and could take care of any details for me if I end up attending a school away from home (where I'd like the wedding to be).
  7. Has anyone here attempted the daunting task of planning a wedding during grad school? I have just graduated from undergrad, gotten engaged, and I am waiting to hear back from grad programs. I would like to get married in Fall of 2016, but haven't set anything in stone yet (venues, vendors, etc.) Do grad programs discourage taking time off to have a wedding (and possibly honeymoon)? I will only be in my 3rd semester by then, so missing classes would be an issue I suppose.. Any input would be greatly appreciated!
  8. Waiting, waiting, waiting...

      I know the feeling...

  9. Today, while texting with a friend, she told me that she had just received an interview with Northwestern. I immediately became jealous, since I had applied there as well and haven't heard from them. Then I got an email notification. It was from Northwestern!! But of course it was just a notification to apply to their master's program.. The waiting game sucks! Especially when people you know start getting interviews.
