I think that if you feel it will be super convenient the first year then to go for it. I mean there are some advantages to on campus housing especially if you are new to the city. I think it could help with a transition a lot. I have a question as well. My housing status changed from waitlist to guaranteed but not renewable. I know grad housing is supposedly for the first year only. But does this change mean that I am going to be offered the chance to stay on campus the first year? I haven't gotten anything via mail or by email about it.
  3. well i spoke with someone at nyu and they said its disbursed (1/2) in august. I'm also ny bound :-) You may want to have him call the financial aid office though, or shoot them an email.

going to nyu in the fall too. I was thinking the same thing about housing, it doesn't really look promising. I saw that I'm on the housing waitlist. I don't think it will come through though so I plan to start looking for a studio end of jul beginning of aug. I doubt I'll be living close to nyu though so a commute it will be for me :-(
  5. Yeah I'm sure its just a typo, but it was funny and the last thing I expected to read. However, I have no intentions on going to that school. It was the my last choice in the first place so its not just because they made the typo. However, they did take way way long to send anything.
  6. I just got an admit in the mail today later than expected. Anyway, I'm all happy when I open the letter and see congratulations _____ you've been accepted into.... then I read Sports Management program and I'm like huh? I didn't apply for any sports management program. I don't even see how a sports management program would even be in the department that I did apply too. Crazy!
  7. I wanted to update this thread for others next year or whenever who maybe in the same situation. Well, I wrote my SOP without mentioning the first college bad grades or the circumstances. I made my SOP be really where adcom's could get to know who I was now, positive things, etc... I wrote an optional essay addressing my first year grades. It was really short and got to the point, I addressed the bad grades, expressed that I wouldn't make any excuses for them, and moved on to positive things. I stated that I knew ad coms wanted all transcripts to discover any academic trends and that they would notice an immediate trend where I maintained a 3.5 and above at all schools attended since then, etc.. etc.. I also stated that although not good my first year of college helped to shape and mold who I am today, by teaching me valuable life lessons... Well, it seemed to have worked for me, so maybe it will work for someone else in the future!
  8. That's jacked up. The one university that I'm waiting on and applied to in January still has my app listed as incomplete. I've just given up on them. All of the materials that couldn't be completed online were sent in one package (and it was received by them 3 days after sending it b/c I had delivery confirmation). They said they received some of the documents and the others they have not received. Ummmm how??? They were all together! Every time I emailed them I received a generic response that due to large volume of applicants it would take longer for applications to show as complete. I just decided not to even try resending the documents that they show as not received. Based on their copy and pasted replies I'm just not even interested in attending. Definite $80 waste so I understand. However, it just seems like they wasted the O.P's time...
  9. moahb The process was explained to me by nyu the same exact way that you described it. So I believe that you are correct in how you broke down the amounts. pea-jay I read that you can still borrow under the direct plus grad loan with a judgment or bankruptcy older than 5 years. So I think you'd be okay, you might want to ask your financial aid office. I have a collection acct from 6 years ago (I was a financially dumb when I was 18 seriously don't even ask). I saved the money to pay it off, but I'm afraid if I pay it, that it will stay on my report for 7 more years saying its a bad satisfied debt :-( I'm going to call the direct servicing and ask them if I should pay it before I apply for the plus loan or if I should apply first and wait for a decision from them. Because I'm not sure if debts older than 5 years count period. I don't know. Anyone have experience with that?
  10. Thanks! I sent an email to the school I haven't heard from yet. Hopefully, I'll get a decision soon and I hope you do too!
  11. Hi! I am waiting for one school who is not giving an admit until after 4/15. (I applied in the second round) Meanwhile I have an admit that wants a answer/reply before then. I really want to go to the program that is not giving the decision until after 4/15. So I have two issues. I need to ask one program to give me an exact time frame that I should have the decision by. On the other hand I need to ask the one I have an admit for to give me more time to give them an answer on whether I will attend. How would you all handle this? Thanks for any suggestions!
  12. Yep, I'm glad for the email as it does at least let me know where I stand. However, I wish the official letter would hurry up and come!
  13. It's Academic and you're right its out of my hands because I've already mailed it off! If the worst that could happen is that they contact my rec, then I should be good to go. My rec won't mind and would speak highly of me. I've decided to not even worry about it. I think it will be fine. Also, the letter may have been on letterhead, so hopefully it was. Thanks for the replies!
  14. I think it depends on the school. Perhaps also how conservative the school is as someone already mentioned. I took a business course at Liberty U and I personally wouldn't take another class there. I am also SO not Christian, but I do appreciate the study of the Bible. However, if I sign up for a business class, I don't want to have to interpret the bible or provide supporting evidence from the Bible about such Business topics. So it depends on the school and you specifically. If you can visit, I would say visit. myoung84, Fordham is an Jesuit University but I believe its Liberal also...
  15. I'm not sure how they would know, unless your transcripts from other schools thereafter list transfer credits. In that case, the transcript usually list where the credit(s) was transferred from. Also, I think schools get a copy of your federal financial aid record. I could be wrong, but I think the record shows the schools that you have received financial aid at. So if this applies then I guess they could know that way. I think its worth it to just send all transcripts though.
  16. Thanks for all of the replies on this. I pretty much did what LifeIsGood did. I ended up leaving it out of my SOP. For the two programs that required an explanation in an optional essay, I did include it there. We will see what happens!
  17. LMAO I'M BEING AN IDIOT? Well, thanks in that I do not want to be one. Wow, but I did decide to send it off as is. I sent it this morning so now all there is to do is wait. I feel somewhat relieved in that now the outcome will be what it will be... I think I had some last minute freaking out.... but I'm normal again. So see not an idiot after all! lol
  18. Ok I searched the forum and I've pretty much made up my mind. I'm going to ask to get it re-printed. THANKS THOUGH!
  19. I agree with fuzzylogician, they will likely just choose 3 to look at only anyway. I would email the admissions dept and get their take on it as well.
  20. I'm sorry to hear this. If you are local I would pay a visit. I mean that is sort of rude. At that point the rec should have just asked you to write it, review it, and if they agree then sign it and let you go on about your merry way. I couldn't imagine having a rec do this to me. Perhaps you should go there with a possible rough draft of what a LOR for you could look like based on all of the work you've done under the prof. and see if that can help motivate them. I don't know, just trying to think of ways to help... I hope it all works out for you.
  21. Hi everyone, So my rec did not put the LOR on letterhead. At least I do not think, I mean the envelope is just a plain white envelope. Meanwhile, I put my SOP on a business like 100% cotton paper. So I was thinking of asking this rec to re-print the LOR on my cotton paper or on letterhead. Do you think it would be rude for me to ask my REC to re-print the LOR? He already told me he's willing to do a letter for another program as well. I know that he WILL do it, I just want to know if you all think this comes across as snooty? Or am I just obsessing over nothing? I assumed that he would put the letter in the schools letterhead paper and envelopes like another rec had. The admissions does not say that it HAS to be on letterhead though. Instead they have one of those forms and he wrote me a letter to accompany the form. Do you think an adcom will look down upon a letter that is NOT on letterhead? I planned on mailing this in the morning, but now I'm not sure. Please let me know what you all think. Thanks
  22. I sort of don't get this... by the way, my vote is do not look at them just pick randomly and send them. OR send all of them. However, I don't get it because if the person does open and read them does that not mean that they then have to seal and sign the flap of the envelope too? As that is signing someone else's name and is worst than just reading it. I don't think that you would be the worst person in the world if you read it, but I just think to prevent yourself from having morally questioning thoughts afterward, that the person should just avoid doing it in the first place. I have been placed in a situation like this before in my case I had a rec write it for me and it was an outstanding recommendation... I then wanted another letter later on (about a year later) and the rec told me to just modify the one I had and to sign there name on it. Also, told me I had permission to use it over as much as I needed (sign it as much as I needed). Now granted this rec and I have a great professional relationship, but that's out there. I wonder what would some of you do in that situation where you've been GIVEN PERMISSION for something like this. I couldn't bring myself to do it because I just wondered what would happen if that ever backfired on me. It's just not that serious! I just got a rec from someone else. So I guess my point is that, even though its about your future its just not that serious. Just tell the friend to do Eeny, meeny, miny, moe and send it. hehe :-)
  23. Thanks to everyone who replied to me here! Everyone put a different view on it that I hadn't originally thought of. If I do decide to address it, it will be brief and I will turn it into a positive. Though I am not sure that I am going to address it at all. I have so much education/classes training from different schools that have been employee sponsored that I just feel that anyone should be able to look at the transcript record and see that the last 4 schools I attended had all 3.7 or above grades. I don't know. coyabean I'm going to read your pm and respond to you as well. Thanks to everyone for your time.
  24. Hi everyone, First let me say that this is my first post and I am already hooked to this forum. I've been obsessing over the details of applying to grad school and it's nice to converse with others going through the same process. I'm hoping some of you can give me insight into my application concerns. Okay here it goes... I originally went to college fresh out of H.S. at age 17, I did terribly. I literally, and I do mean literally flunked out of every class except one which I just loved for some reason. I had really bad family issues and became very depressed (very personal things). Things I really would NOT like to divulge in my applications. I returned to school as an adult age 23 for undergrad and did fine there 3.7gpa, VA Tech. I've also taken some general business graduate level courses that my employer has paid for which were really to help supplement my job duties (18 credits 3.83 GPA). So flash forward to now, I'm ready to apply for admissions into an actual grad school program. My question is this: Have any of you ever been in this type of situation? Or if not, do you think I should address this in an optional essay? Do you think that this would be required or would it be looked down upon if I do not address these bad grades from over 10 years ago? Also, in the midst of those years in which I took the break from school (while working full time all the while), I pretty much discovered my passion which has led me to my current goals. When I returned to school at 23 I had a very clear focus on what it was that I wanted to do. While at 17 I was completely lost to be quite honest. So the other option is to talk about that I guess? Thank you for any and all input that you all provide.
