I have a cat and spend oodles of time in the lab. She seems okay with it. Sometimes she wants attention when I get home. Sometimes she acts annoyed because I woke her up. I find it quite relaxing to have her sitting/sleeping on my lap.

My suggestions - and feel free to disregard:
    1. Get a cat from a shelter. The cost is much lower than a pet store and the cat will already be spayed/neutered.
    2. If you get a cat that isn't spayed/neutered, have it spayed or neutered. Female cats are very very loud when they are in heat and will wake you up.
    3. Keep the cat indoors. You won't have to worry about fleas/ticks/etc, it won't run away, and it won't get hurt or killed.

I was able to toilet train my cat so I don't have to deal with litter boxes. My cat isn't declawed and she's really good about using her scratching pad. It's one of those cheap $10 cardboardy ones that she can stand on. She really likes it. She scratches her claws a lot. Way more than other cats. I'm a little worried she's plotting to kill me.

I've given up hope. I'm thinking of dropping out of school, moving to Hawaii and becoming a cabana girl.

Based on past years, I'm pretty sure the "feedback" is the notes the reviewers made to help them remember what stood out about the application.

Hence the repetition of words or phrases from the applications themselves.

I'll also reiterate the advice that if you feel like someone completely missed your point, it's worth thinking about how to make sure that doesn't happen again.

For grant proposals and review in general, there's no such thing as being too clear, obvious, and to the point. Most real grant proposals make liberal use of underlining, bolding, italics, and the consistent repetition of important phrases to make sure that the reviewers get the most important, crucial points of the proposal.

You people, who are down-voting the successful applicants, are acting really pathetic. Perhaps its that sour attitude you have that somehow cost you this award (and likely many opportunities in life). I wholeheartedly believed that I wasn't going to win an award, and with that I was ready to congratulate my friends that did because this is a really important stepping stone in academia. Get it together;  it's shameful.

I hate how angry and entitled some people are on this thread. Just be glad you get back feedback, but recognize that it's still a crap-shoot process.

My third reviewer said I was a strong applicant, but I didn't get squat. My hope is that there was a holistic process that awarded applicants who were better qualified overall than me, rather than who got the luck of the draw with reviewers. If it means that I get high marks and don't win the award, but someone else who is actually better qualified than me (holistically, not just in a two-line review) got it, then great. This is exactly what the system should be - there's no way to "normalize" different reviewers.

So stop complaining you arrogant entitled fools.

Got the email saying still being considered. Computer Science.

I was super excited with the "We are pleased to" but then saw "still being considered" and I was all "WTF?"

Who the hell writes a sentence like that? It's like if your boyfriend/girlfriend were to say "We need to talk... Nutter-butters are a seriously underrated cookie."

All 212 of whom are more anxious, nervous and wound up than a long-tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs.
