  1. I felt really horrible, but this Saturday I had to back out of an undergraduate conference scheduled for this past Monday! I saw they were forecasting heavy snow where/when I'd be driving, and it's a seven hour drive for me so I couldn't risk it. I sent a polite email, but the conference never responded, so I hope they weren't pissed . . . Either way, I'd rather have them pissed than me risk my life!
  2. So, I just e-mailed to check my status, and Prof. Bauer told me that "it doesn't seem likely" he could admit me to their Ph.D. program, but that he could offer me an unfunded M.A. position. ADVICE?!? I have fully funded Ph.D. offers from Stony Brook, Northeastern, Albany, and GWU, and a fully funded MA from Delaware (which is basically a feed-in to a Ph.D.), so should I consider taking only partial funding to go to U Maryland? I really would love to work with the Shelley-Godwin archive, and U Maryland is a super great program, but I don't know about taking out more debt . . .
  3. Right now, I'm torn between University of Delaware and Stony Brook. I'm leaning towards Stony Brook, just because they made me a sweet financial offer, but I'm nervous and excited to have these two good options on the table! Any insights between the programs are appreciated
  4. I had a really nice convo with the graduate director today! He was really down-to-earth and HONEST, which really sat well with me! I'm pretty sure I'll accept their offer, but I won't know 100% until I visit on March 31st!
  5. I've definitely gotten contacted at weird-ass times - the BC prof who gave me an unfunded MA sent me an email at 8:45 pm on a Friday night!!! But definitely don't give up hope! I know Albany mentioned they're possibly doing other rounds of admits, and my professors keep telling me it's not over until you get a rejection in your hand, so I'm rooting for you
  6. They've invited wait listed candidates to the visit days, so I'll be there Tuesday! I don't know if they've admitted any wait list candidates, but I've not heard anything!
  7. Hi, all! Anyone else get accepted by Alexa Huang this morning?? By this morning, I mean like a personal email at 12:45 a.m. . . .Very excited with the offer!!!
  8. Huh, good to know! My heart's set on Stony Brook, but glad to know I'm not completely out of hope!!!
  9. I'm with you! At this point, I'm taking it as an assumed rejection; I might contact the dept. if I don't hear in a couple weeks!
  10. And yeah, I might shoot them an email if I haven't heard anything by Monday! GAAH the agony of waiting, lol!
  11. I'm trying not to get any hopes up, but I'm so hoping we're on a waiting list!!! Or, like you said, maybe they're just cruel and rejecting people in waves; though, I don't see the logic to that, but I'm sure there's a method to the madness!
  12. Sorry to hijack this as well, but do you know if they're still making decisions? I haven't heard, and I know they've given out acceptances and a bunch of rejections, so perhaps I'm wait listed? also: CONGRATS!!!!
  13. I really can't say for sure, but my advisor cautioned me not to apply to NYU. She has a friend in the department, and my professor mentioned that it's sort of a cut-throat, toxic atmosphere with a lot of faculty divisions. Again, she didn't give me specifics, so take this with a big grain of salt, and hopefully people who have actually been there can give you more wisdom! And CONGRATULATIONS ON THE ACCEPTANCE!!!
  14. Any advice if you're visiting while still on a waiting list??? I'm wait listed at Tufts and would LOVE to go there; they've asked their wait listed candidates to join for their admitted students day, and I'll be there on March 11th. WHAT DO I DO?!?
  15. Thanks so much for the offer to PM; your perspective definitely means a lot
  16. Congratulations!!!!!! Hopefully we'll be colleagues at Tufts :) What an amazing first acceptance!!!!!!!
  17. Hello! I just got wait listed at Tufts and I could not be more thrilled!!!! Well, perhaps if they admitted me, but still, you get my point . . . Anyway, just wondering a) did anyone else get wait listed? Is anyone in, but not accepting the offer? c) I'm not familiar with this whole process (first round applicant), so can anyone tell me the chances of actually getting off of a wait list for a Ph.D program? This is my ultimate dream school, and I'd love to get a sense of what the atmosphere looks like as far as who's in, who else is wait listed, and what my chances might be!
  18. Don't lose hope! YOU NEVER KNOW!!! My professors keep saying that it's not over until you hear; they like to admit people in "rounds" sometimes, and it's still so early!
  19. I'm from Rhode Island, so I'll just totally echo the obsession with Boston :) And glad to hear Newark seems like a good area!!!
  20. Sadly, no - I have my senior comprehensive exams Friday, and then I'm traveling that Sunday :-(
  21. Thanks; yeah, it was me and good luck with the rest of your acceptances!!! And hah, my letter writer went to Delaware as well; she loved it there and assured me that the Delaware library is FABULOUS, and the teaching experience is awesome, too! Thanks, everyone, for the advice!!
  22. Hi all! I've gotten three admits so far, and I was hoping I could have some people tell me what they think? I'm going into Victorian / Modern British literature and was admitted to University of Delaware's Master's program (they make you get a MA and then re-apply to their Ph.D), Stony Brook's Ph.D program, and Northeastern's Ph.D. program. I'd love to hear what your general perceptions of these schools are, what things to think about as I make a decision, or any advice about the areas; basically, anything you can tell me to help me think this through would be much appreciated! I applied to thirteen schools, but I'm not counting on any more admits - my stats aren't great, 3.77 GPA and no conference papers / publications; amazed I got into any, actually!
