Canadian Universities MSW. The waiting game 2015 admissions
smpalesh replied to smpalesh's topic in Social Workers Forum
Personally, I never would have bothered doing a SSW program. If the goal is an MSW, and becoming a registered social worker, the SSW really does not do much to get you there. If you look on job search websites for social work jobs they want an MSW. The jobs available for SSW are lower paid and not at the same level as MSW jobs. I would personally say volunteer/work in a social work related area for the year, maybe do a university certificate if you have money available because that will go towards your GPA. -

In regards to the question about Lakehead what I would personally do is accept Lakehead and then when the program is due to start take yourself off the waitlist for other schools. There is no sense driving yourself crazy like that and it would be very difficult to withdraw from a program at the last minute. -
It is obvious that is just a standard rejection letter.

kathclemens - I am going to be in the Advanced Standing (so 2nd year) Social Justice and Diversity stream at UofT in the fall. How many students would you say are in that stream? I'm assuming it's going to be much smaller than the mental health and health and child and family streams. -

Laurier had their placement fair already? Wow, that is really early. At this point I am assuming that I will be going to UofT for the upcoming year. UofT is an amazing school, but Laurier was my top choice for a number of reasons. -

Has anyone heard of anyone getting off the waitlist for Laurier's Advanced Standing program? I am starting to think the odds are not looking good. -
Your title says no word in weeks but that isn't true. You heard on March 20 and it is the 31st. That is 11 days. I don't think you have any reason to be worrying yet. If you're concerned contact the department.

ACE2015 - Congrats! It's nice to hear some people do make it off the wait list. I am still on the wait list for Laurier and I don't have much hope I will get off of it. But stories like yours are encouraging. -

mika_aria - Honestly, it is likely too late to add anything at this point. They know people submit applications in December and they know people will continue to live after that point so many people will have more experience by the time school would start. They base your application based on your stats at the time of application. Expecting them to review updated information for hundreds of applicants is not realistic. -

swrk - Waitlist candidates are also notified through email. You won't find out anything from Laurier on the portal. -

Angela wasn't off today. I emailed back and forth with her a couple of times regarding information on the upcoming year (I deferred from last year). I don't think that it is an every Friday thing, I am not sure why they are notifying some people and not others but their website says you are guaranteed an answer by mid-April so unfortunately it might be a bit more of a wait. -

wxyyyz - What years did you attend the BSW at UWaterloo bc I didn't find that to be true at all. There were 60 people in my program and at least 10 were not white. There were also a number of openly gay/bi/etc class members. -
gongyq2010 - What an odd question. I would assume they know they are waitlisted because they were told they were waitlisted...

Last year UofT sent out all acceptances, waitlists, and rejections the same day (March 3). It is highly possibly that they have sent out waitlists and also rejections, people just haven't received them yet. Hopefully people will get some answers by the end of the week. -

lisaa - I'm sorry but that person who said that it means you are either accepted or rejected is misinformed. Changing to decision made just means they have made the decision about your file and have notified you. And they have - they have told you that you are waitlisted. If you are accepted off the waitlist you will either get a phone call or an email. -
I am on an unranked waitlist of 30 people. I was told that it will remain unranked and that when a spot opens up they will reassess all the people on the waitlist to decide who gets that spot. Seems like a lot of extra work to me, but it does cause me to keep having that tiny bit of hope that I'll be the one they decide is worthy.

Yes, I think it is obvious at this point that Bernard is either a troll or crazy. Either way, no point in responding. I highly doubt this person is actually attending any type of graduate program.

I was accepted into the Advanced Standing at UofT last year (deferred to this year). I don't know how long the Invite status was up on ROSI. I didn't check until March 3 and it said Invited. I got the big package in the mail on March 6. My status on sgs didn't change to Decision Made until 2.5 weeks after that. Don't worry, if it says Invited you are 100% accepted! -

I just wanted to let people here that are waiting know that someone I know was accepted to Ryerson Advanced Standing today. -
Buffalofan4255 - Congrats on going to University of Toronto! It really is a great school and I'm sure you will enjoy living in Canada.

I wanted to add that McGill is competitively ranked in world university rankings with the other schools you mentioned. University of Illinois is ranked 29th in the world, McGill is ranked 39th, and Penn State is ranked 58th. So as you can see it is not much lower than University of Illinois and is quite a bit higher than Penn State. Also, for the person who is trying to claim Canadian universities can't compete with US universities - not only is McGill ranked 39th in the world, ranking higher than MANY US universities, University of Toronto is ranked 20th and University of British Columbia is ranked 32nd . To put that into perspective - University of Toronto is ranked higher than Northwestern, Carnegie Mellon, NYU and other schools that are typically seen as very good US schools.

goodnews - last year someone was a current UofT student and was accepted into the MSW. Their ROSI changed to the same thing the test of us are seeing - Invited for MSW Fall 2015. -

This year the advanced standing applicants heard over the course of a few weeks so don't start panicking yet! Officially, UofT notifies by snail mail so its definitely not over until you get an official letter either way. I'm sure more of you are going to be accepted. In the event that you aren't accepted, your ROSI won't change. It won't change for either a rejection or a waitlist. Also, when I was accepted my status didn't change to "decision made" for another 3 weeks. That area doesn't seem to really be updated as regularly. This happening on a Friday really, really sucks! I know how frustrating that it. Hopefully Monday will bring good news for more people. And congrats to the ones who got in! swrk - I graduated from the 1 year program at Waterloo in June 2014. It is a really great program and I completely credit it with me getting into the advanced standing program at UofT. -
Bernard1992 - Please tell me you are joking. Please. Because I don't want to believe that someone who is at a graduate level education is so COMPLETELY uneducated about Canada. arsham-rezaeyeh - Please do not listen to anything this person says! McGill is a great school and Canada is an amazing country with lots of opportunities.

zebra_mountain - Orientations are usually not mandatory so I would ask the school about it. I know UofT has an orientation day in April but it is definitely not mandatory.
