Canadian Universities MSW. The waiting game 2015 admissions
smpalesh replied to smpalesh's topic in Social Workers Forum
In regards to experience hours it depends on the school as to how important they are. Laurier is very strict about the hours. Usually people accepted will have more than the bare minimum that they post on their website. UofT on the other hand views it as one part of a total application and is a lot less likely to reject an applicant for not having enough experience. -

I really think everyone should stop contacting Angela and freaking out over this. The website very clearly states that you will hear by mid-April. If you hear before then, great, but you are not guaranteed to. It is only March 11. I am truly surprised by how many people think they should be hearing now when it is clearly stated you will hear by mid-April. I think Angela is likely going to start getting quite irritated by people constantly contacting her for information. -

selis - Don't worry that you would have gotten in if you'd selected another stream. They do not admit people based on stream. They admit them based on suitability for the MSW and the size of the specializations is random. It looks like there are a higher number of people waitlisted for the mental health and health specialization because that is the most common specialization. The specializations in popularity are 1) mental health and health, 2) children and families, 3) social justice and diversity, 4) gerontology, and 5) social service administration. But again, admissions are not done by specialization. -
I agree with you. My number one choice has waitlisted me and it is agony wondering whether I have a chance to get in. A part of me wishes I was just rejected so I wouldn't live in constant waiting.

Socialworkerr - The mail seems to be variable so I would bet that you will hear something tomorrow or the day after. -

For those who got waitlisted for UofT your status on ROSI will not change. It only changes for acceptances. I know there is usually movement on the waitlist so hopefully some of you will get acceptances in the next month or two. I am still hoping on Laurier so if I get in there I will be turning down UofT and opening up a spot for someone. So if you know someone who got into Laurier tell them to turn it down! LOL -
sondraelizabeth - Look at the dates. This thread is from a year ago. 2 year acceptances for Laurier will not come out until April.

Unknown13 - I wish I knew! I am waitlisted for Laurier and it is my #1 choice and even though I know I shouldn't hope, I still do. If I got into Laurier I'd be giving up a UofT spot for someone else. I can only stay on the waitlist until I've arranged a placement with UofT because I don't feel right about arranging a placement and then backing out (I had to do that last year because of health problems causing me to defer a year and it felt very unprofessional towards the agency). Still hoping that lots more people get the good news they are waiting for! -

Congrats to all those who just heard about Advanced Standing at UofT! littlelass - I am also in the Social Justice and Diversity stream. For those who are wondering about ROSI - you don't have to look anywhere, it is there right when you log in. If you are in it will stay status Invited. If it doesn't say anything it usually means you are waitlisted or not accepted, but they might still be processing things. As for the status being "under review" mine said under review for 4 weeks after I already knew I was accepted so don't worry about that. -
Personally I wouldn't do it unless it was a very short program (1 year or less). IMO that kind of distance has a high chance of tearing a relationship apart. For me personally, it would not be worth it.
-
Why would you apply to a school if you didn't think it was good enough to attend? I would assume you researched the program before deciding to apply so why doubt your decision now? Like you said, it's your 3rd year applying. Personally I would be happy for the acceptance and start making plans to attend.

Being accepted with conditions is totally normal when you are still finishing up a prior program. It does not mean anything negative or that your acceptance is less exciting! It just means that if for some reason you didn't finish your current program then you wouldn't be accepted

inableakvision - I was on that thread and the advanced standing MSW applicants did not get notifications until after March 3. Most people got the letters between March 5-9. And it was acknowledged that this was EARLY for UofT. I'm not sure why that would make you feel hopeless and impatient when it is still February. They clearly state on their website that notifications go out out mid-March. -

I just want to clear something up about last year and UofT notifications. Today is the 27th of February. Last year NO notifications were sent out for UofT Advanced Standing MSW applications until March 3, at which point all of the letters were sent. And this was actually early for them. If you look at the questions section about applications they very clearly state that notifications for the Advanced Standing will go out mid-March. Some people hearing this year in February is NOT the norm and it does not mean everyone else should have heard. Clearly they are changing things up a little bit. But I keep hearing people say that people had heard by this time last year and that is simply not true. I should know because I was an applicant during that cycle. My acceptance letter came March 6. My acceptance in my signature line is a deferral from last year. So it is totally and completely normal to not have heard from UofT by this point! Mid-March is the time frame for Advanced Standing and people who are waiting for 2 years from UofT (or Laurier or other schools) - you are not going to hear until mid-April! That is a very well known fact. Like I said, it is February 27, people waiting on the 2 year MSW programs likely have at least 5-7 weeks to wait. I understand being anxious but you need to understand the timeframe so you don't drive yourself crazy. -

Socialworkerr - Have you contacted Angela? Since you are waiting on another offer I think it would be fine to contact her and ask when she thinks you will be notified as you would like to hear from UofT before you make your final decision. -

This is the 2014 thread. Why did you bump it up? People might get confused and start posting on this thread. -

jjmr89 - I was accepted last year but if I remember correctly it is 3 or 4 weeks from the day your letter is dated. You have to respond with a $150 deposit (at least that was the amount for me). -

mps - If your Rosi says invited then you are accepted. People went through this last year, with the stress over worrying if it was true or not, but I am telling you - if you were not in it would say no registration history. I wouldn't contact the school about it, I would just wait for your letter in the mail. I'm sure it will be coming soon! -

Prairiegirl2015 - Still really hoping for Laurier. I know I shouldn't be because the odds are so very tiny, but I am. All I can do is wait! -

MSW-UofT - I really don't think being a prior UofT student gives you a higher chance to get in. I think they review all applications together. 76 is a low GPA, I'm not sure whether that will be a problem or not for you. Hopefully your application as a whole will make you a competitive applicant. Good luck! -

applying99 - That definitely means you are accepted! Congrats! I was accepted to UofT last year (my accept in my sig line is a deferral from last year) and my status said under review for weeks after I got my acceptance. -

I'm hoping a lot of people turn down Laurier I will stay on the waitlist until I start having to arrange a practicum with UofT because obviously once I have done that I can't drop out of UofT. So I am hoping to get off that wait list by the end of April. You never know If I get into Laurier a spot will open up for someone at UofT. Too bad we can't just trade amongst ourselves to get our perfect school -

You might still get into other places. I hope you get your top choice wherever that is. I grew up in British Columbia (in a place no one has heard of LOL) and I know western Canada is a wonderful place to live I am trying to get myself geared up for the idea of having to commute. My health is still not great right now (the reason I deferred last year). Ideally, I would want to take another year off but I can't defer another year. Plus I need to start working and pay off school debt! With Laurier I would be local so that would have been easier. But I am trying to turn my mindset around and look for the positive. I'll get over it and start looking forward soon LOL. It takes awhile to get over disappointment I think.
