Why hide them?  I just remove these "types" from my friends list all together.

Life without Facebook is so much more enjoyable.

I'm so sick of babies. They're ugly, disgusting little creatures and while I want children, the idea of carrying a child, giving birth, and then being responsible for a helpless being freaks me out. I'm at the age where a lot of people I know have started families, and quite frankly it annoys me that I can't see any of these people without their children in tow. Further more, some old friends live far away and only visit the area two or three times each year. I don't understand why the husbands get to go to the bar with old buddies, go golfing with their dads, and otherwise do any child-free activity they want while the wives never get a break from the kids. Blah. Maybe when I finally do have kids, my brain will rewire itself and I'll develop all of these maternal instincts and think babies are beautiful. Until then, I will politely tell you all that your baby is cute, but really I will be thinking that it looks like an alien.

Unfortunately, I'm in a rather dead end job so one way or another I need to make a change. I was hoping it would be PhD program, because it was the first thing that felt right. I keep trying to remind myself that the job market is no picnic and maybe, like ComeBackZinc says, I dodged a bullet.

Still undecided on whether or not to apply for a third round next fall. I guess it depends on my work situation and if I've found anything that feels comparable to what I was gunning for in my studies.

ETA: I have to admit that this is the first time I've ever felt financially secure -- just finished paying off a load of debt I incurred during MA studies. So it will be nice not to penny pinch for a while, maybe even buy some clothes that aren't torn/stained.

Sooo...anyone else in their 30s who was shut out for the second year in a row? Was just officially rejected from my last option (Tufts).

Also, I second the Pittsburgh question. WTH?

I have to say I really, really appreciate getting Cornell's rejection at the same time as I was seeing stuff pop up on the results board. It's nice not holding out hope and waiting on pins and needles.

Do you mean before it's posted in something like the Acceptance Thread? Not sure if I'm doing you a disservice by introducing you to the neurosis-inducing tool known as the results board: http://www.thegradcafe.com/survey/

They probably sounded ridiculous (I can't even find the comment you're talking about?), but you guys are really sounding nasty right now.

I'll just go ahead and step out on a limb and say you absolutely need to stop focusing so hard on the results page. It's not healthy, and I honestly don't think it's helpful. When you get accepted, you will be notified. If you are rejected, you will be notified. There is no reason this thread should be manhandled into such an extensive discussion of what some anonymous commenter said on the internet.

Gah. I work with tree haters, too. I'm constantly pulling stuff out of the trash to reuse/put in the recycling bin. Seriously, folks!

One of my colleagues drives me up the wall with how much paper she wastes. She'll just print out 10 articles of 20 pages each, use up all the paper and not refill it. Then she'll just dump half of it in the trash (which is right beside the recycling bin, by the way). Or she'll print out 50 pages and then walk off to class and come back, "Oh... wait I printed that? Oh well. Guess I don't need it."

I can't stand it. It makes me want to scream! I've been grabbing all her paper and printing my articles and drafts on the back just to make myself feel better.

    Why the waste?! WHY?!

I applied to a lot of schools and did it through a combination of student loan money, fee waivers, and a pre-doctoral program I was in that paid for about half of my schools.

I'm a first generation college attendee, and the first person in my family to graduate high school in the conventional 4 years. In my 30+ years of life I have never lived in a house, only small apartments.

As long as there is capitalism, money and inequality will be an issue and there's no solution.... but revolution.

Yeah...I just keep hoping that my "life experience" has somehow made me more inured to life and its disappointments. I haven't even been working full time much of the semester, and I honestly think that the only thing more stressful than being super broke is the stress of working more than I can handle. Or maybe I'm wrong. I can't even think of a time in my adult life that I was not poor. I'm so prepared to live off of a phd student stipend

In almost every job I've ever had, I've had to work next to an exterior door. All I want is an f'n warm place to work. When I have job interviews I find myself immediately sizing up the heat of the place.
