  1. Way to go twinguy7!!! maybe you'll have more than one acceptance by the end of the week Enjoy your acceptance. YOU deserve to gloat!!
  2. Hi, I'm kind of in the same boat, but fortunately, I'm one step ahead. I'm also in Europe and will be heading to Boston in the fall. For my pre-reqs, I'm taking all of them via Utah State University Online. It's really great so far. They offer the classes you need as well. As far as proctoring goes, I went to the Fulbright commission. I'm not sure where in France you are, but if you're in Paris, that should be relatively easy to find someone. The alternative is to find a professor or high school teacher. What happens is that you first find someone who is willing to proctor, then you send that contact to the proctor approval at USU, and then you wait a couple of days (maybe less) until the USU person agrees on the selected proctor. Let me know if you need any more help
  3. Hi, I'm in the same boat. I spoke with one of the profs at MGH informing them I could not attend the info session. They will be sending out a pdf of what we will be missing. I think the e-mail from Prof. Lof was sent to everyone. I wouldn't worry about it, especially since you already informed them that you wouldn't be able to attend. Hope this help, Erica
  4. On paper, MGH definitely seems to require more credits to graduate, but I have no idea what the actually means in terms of work. For example, some of my 3 credit hour undergraduate classes at McGill required more effort than some of the 4 credit hour graduate classes I took. It’s just hard to measure, at least for me it is. My best sense would be to just talk to current/past slp students at both schools and get a feel for what they say. I’ve heard from most MGH students that organization is really the key to success, which I’m sure is true for grad school in general. Sorry, it’s not a question with an easy answer, but I think you have a valid point regarding credit hours.
  5. Ladyinwaiting23, You seem to be in a rather unique predicament, given you’ve been accepted to seemingly some of the best places! On that note, congratulations. One thing you might be able to do is leverage these acceptances and see if you can use them to your advantage. Going to school is also a business in the sense that great schools want to attract and retain great students. They invest in students for many reasons, among many is the ambassadorship a graduate will carry as they progress in their careers. So my thought is, if you like MGH so much, perhaps just call them and explain to them your situation. Maybe they might have some extra funding for you in this case? After all, asking is free J In any case, you’re really lucky to have all these amazing choices, but I completely understand your dilemma. Personally, I’m set on MGH. I was accepted and also accepted my offerJ Good luck! Erica
  6. Yes, I am a U.S. citizen. Just living abroad I'll definitely look into one of those self-paced classes. I've also peaked at the SUNY list offerings, which seem pretty good.
  7. Thank you so much for the replies. Unfortunately I live overseas, so my only options are online. No such thing as a local community college here Good luck everyone! I hope these coming weeks all bring the news you're hoping for (if it hasn't already )
  8. The MGH masters' is still a 2-year program, it's just that the two years are split into 6 semesters: Fall, Spring, Summer, Fall, Spring, Summer.
  9. Hi! I have to take either chemistry or biology this summer (the geology class I took as an undergrad doesn't count as my science prerequisite). So anyway, I was thinking about taking it via Utah State Online, however, it is 14 weeks long. Does anybody know if there are other online alternatives that take fewer weeks? I was hoping to have a few extra weeks off before starting grad school Thanks, Erica
  10. I'm waiting to hear from MGH.... They apparently also sent out admission notices the first week of March the last couple of years... so I guess this my weekend to check my computer obsessively haha -Erica Good luck this weekend! Hope there's good to news to spread!!!
  11. Greeneryforests, your stats are ridiculous. I'm sure you'll be accepted off the waitlist. Even then, you already have such amazing choices! erica
  12. Here's my advice on this. The reality is that these are low scores for the GRE. I would say continue with the spirit of submitting an application, and if for your are not accepted this year, then DON'T PANIC. Getting into grad school for speech is tough. Keep in mind that at the application level, you are unfortunately only a 2-dimensional application, so maybe other facets of your application will outshine your GRE. In the absolute worst case, you apply next year. Try to see every response as an opportunity, no matter what the outcome is. As I was trying to say, in the worst case scenario, and you're not accepted because of a 'test', re-take it, But the next time, take your time to learn the GRE. My Kaplan teacher once said, "the GRE doesn't test how smart you are, it tests you on how well you can take the GRE". It's really a matter of strategy and perseverance. We have no crystal ball as to how the next few months will play out, just keep positive and patient. Best of luck!!! Erica
  13. Hi SLP community, I visited some of the Boston area programs over the summer/this fall (MGHIHP, Boston University, Emerson, Northeastern). My impression was that Boston in general seems to have an incredible network of slp institutions, hospitals (Mass General, Brigham and Woman's hospital, etc), great placement programs, highly ranked programs (not sure how much this really matters aside from Ph.D./research desire), and of course, Boston is so lively. I'm a bit nervous about applying since the programs are already so expensive, and then living in Boston is not cheap. I was wondering if anybody else is thinking of not applying to schools here because of the high cost? If it weren't for the cost, I would have zero doubts about applying. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Erica
