  1. I'm Canadian, and so I'm treated like any other international applicant, though the fact that I went to school here might make a difference.  I have similar numbers to you, but less research and no publications.  As you can see from my sig, I got interviewed at 4 good programs, and have already been accepted to Sloan-Kettering.  Just make sure you have good LOR and a strong personal statement and you should be OK.  Also, some state/public schools are mandated to accept more Americans, so keep that in mind.

  2. Honestly it comes down to the class structure.  The people I'd most want to rotate/work with would be at SKI anyways, so I don't miss out on professors at Weill, Rockefeller or HSS, so that doesn't really matter.  I don't care a whole lot about the larger university community that's available at Weill, and I actually like the idea of being a tight knit cohort.  Working as a technician right now at CUMC, I see the rotation students constantly running in and out of lab in order to be in class and do homework.  That is not something that I'd want to do, and the GSK program where rotations and classes are separate avoids it.  Also, I'm pretty sure the ACE for GSK is your thesis presentation, as opposed to something unrelated.

TLDR: Research is the same. Stipend is the same. Housing is the same. Classes and rotations are separate at GSK.

  3. Still waiting on offers from Weill and Columbia, but I've already had an acceptance at Sloan-Kettering for about a month now.  Even if I get into both Weill and Columbia, I'll likely be going to GSK.

Edit: I suppose I'm also waiting on Einstein, but I'm declining it should I get it.

  4. Does anyone know when I should be getting Columbia's Micro&Immuno itinerary/hotel info? They sent me an invite, asked for a faculty list, and then seemingly died. It's soon, so I'm getting worried.

I applied to Pathobiology/Molecular Medicine.  Still nothing and it's next week.  Same story about Weill Cornell IMP.  If I hear nothing from either by the end of the work day today, I'll follow up by e-mail.

  5. Any idea how far in advance Einstein lets you know who you'll interview with?  I'm interviewing next week and I'm not sure who to prep for as I listed like 8 profs on the form.

I literally found out this morning who I was interviewing with about 2 hours later.  Just ask them about their own stuff and they'll talk for the entire time.

    Edit: spelling.

  6. Hey guys, I've been holding this thought for a while, and I am looking for your perspective on this:

So in early January, I got an email saying that I am selected for an interview at UT Southwestern (of all the schools in my school list, this is my top choice), I was very surprised and excited. They provide me a link to register for the interview dates and the track of interest.  I was pretty sure that I would choose the earlier interview, which is Feb 7th, rather than the later one, which is in March 22nd. But somehow, this was so important to me that I postponed it. Thinking back, maybe it was because before UT Southwestern, I also had another interview invite from UGA, and somehow I had already talked to the POI and mentioned that I will go to the interview on the same day of Feb 7th. I could choose the second interview weekend instead and corrected it with the POI.

But well, after I finally wanted to hit enter for UT Southwestern, I discovered that I only had the option of March. I thought: Fine!, I am gonna go ahead and book the flight for UGA interview the date I told the POI (Feb7th), and I did it. But then, two days later, UT Southwestern contacted me with a pending flight ticket for the Feb 7th interview. I emailed them immediately to explain that I didn't have the earlier option the moment I hit enter, and so I'd already planned for something else. I feel extremely uneasy with that decision, because to me UT southwestern>>> UGA, but at that time, the flight to UGA has already been booked, and the ticket had been emailed over for reimbursement, so I didn't want more trouble.

Now, I wonder if my chance of admission for UT Southwestern will be less because I chose the later interview? I convinced myself that it won't be, since in the beginning, they gave me both options, and so it will be unfair that one of the option will lead to less chance of admission.

But in second thought, I take so much risk in a (perhaps) bad decision. What do you guys think about my situation?

    Wouldn't sweat it.  Relax.

  7. Hey,

Had anyone heard of Albert Einstein School of Medicine, University of Texas health science center at San Antonio  and University of Texas at Houston, MD anderson cancer center. I havent heard from them as of yet and it is making me nervous.

Their first interview weekend is actually next week.

    Edit: Their = Einstein

  8. Just got an email inviting me for a Skype interview in 2 days time for the genetics, genomics and development PhD at Cornell University! Also got my official acceptance from Penn State, they are offering:

26000$ stipend per year + 2000$ enhancement for first year and also full tuition fee waiver. They will also nominate me for additional fellowships. I am from the UK, so I am not sure whether this is a good offer or not, any input?

    My situation is therefore at:

Oxford- Genomic Medicine and Statistics - Interview

    Sanger Institute- 4-year PhD -Interview

Cambridge- Mathematical Genomics and Medicine - Interview

Imperial College- Genomic Medicine - Interview

    Harvard- Biostatistics

Harvard- Public Health: Genetic Epidemiology and Statistical Genetics

    Yale- Biostatistics

    UC Davis- Entomology

Penn State- Entomology - Acceptance - 26000$ + tuition fee waiver

Cornell- Genetics, Genomics, and Development - Interview

You might want to ask about health insurance and grad student housing.  $26K is pretty good outside of NYC.

  9. Has anyone here heard from Columbia Biological Sciences department? I see one interview on the results page... based on last year's dates, it looks like they send them out over a pretty long period of time, but I was wondering if anyone had information from this year in particular.

I personally applied to the Biomedical programs at CUMC, but the other day at Sloan-Kettering I talked to a few people who said they had invites to Biological Sciences.  I think their (first?) interviews are in the next couple of weeks

  10. So I have this complication with interviewing scheduling that I hope you guys can help me with!

So I got an invitation from Brown last Monday and their primary interview weekends completely overlaps with my Penn interview weekend. Then, I asked for an alternative weekend, which turned out to be partially overlapping with my Weill Cornell one. My Weill Cornell runs from Wednesday to Friday and Brown runs from Thursday to Saturday. After thinking for a while, I decided to ask Weill Cornell to skip the Friday and travel to Brown in time for the interviews. Do you think this is a good plan? Or it is gonna end up backfiring on me?

Or should I now email Weill Cornell asking for an alternative date? This is something I assume that is going to be bad as it will give an impression that Weill Cornell is not high on my list even though it really is.

In the end, did I do the right thing? Or if not, what should I do now?

    Thanks guys!

It's fine.  I'm interviewing at Columbia IMP on Friday (Feb 14) and Weill said that all faculty interviews will be on Thursday so it would be ok.  Just let them know.

  11. Weill Cornell IMP interview as well !!! Which weekend are you going to, byt2104? I am offered the weekend of Feb 12-14. Out of curiosity, which Columbia's program did you apply to?

Feb 12-14, applied to Pathobiology and Molecular Medicine.  It looks like the actual interview days do not conflict though
