@athan892 In a typical month of 2017, my paycheck at UW CSE was like this:
    Graduate Student 50% Appointment: $ 2,749.00
Federal Income Tax withheld:      $   344.76
    UAW Local 4121 union due          $    32.72
    Workers' compensation insurance   $     8.78
    Net income                        $ 2,362.74
    Hope it helps!
A few things to keep in mind:
Your base pay will differ depending on your academic department. See this page for a complete list. Your pay is subject to federal income tax (~12.5% effective rate for 30k) but exempt from Medicare and Social Security taxes. The state of Washington is one of 9 states that do not levy any income tax. In its stead, you will be subject to a fairly high sales tax (10.2%) and annual vehicle registration tax ($120 + 1.1% of valuation). UW is one of the few institutions where graduate students are unionized. Thus, you will be required to pay a union membership due (1.44% of pay). See UAW Local 4121. UW will pay 100% of health insurance premium on your behalf. The insurance also includes dental and vision benefits. You may also enroll dependents for a fee. You will be still be responsible for miscellaneous fees, including fees for athletic facilities and monthly bus pass (U-pass). This should run about 300 dollars each quarter.

It's April 15th and, after much deliberation, I have accepted an offer to attend Carnegie Mellon this fall. All of the toiling through the whole application process has finally paid off and my efforts have been validated. Now that the reality that I will actually be going somewhere has set in, planning and preparation can begin. I'm excited to get into the lab and get started.

I hope all of you are happy with your decisions and end up where you want to be. Congratulations and good luck to you all, and thanks for the advice that you've posted on this website.

I've heard this year was particularly tough especially in areas like ML/AI which have gotten a lot of popular press. Many programs received record number of applications

I applied to 7 places, out of which 3 made me offers. Considering how many applications UW received this year, I'm really lucky to get the offer.

BTW, if I were to start over all over again, I'd spend more time on my statement of purpose. I felt embarrassed when professors I met during visits recalled minute details from my statement xP

I asked several people about this at my visit at UW. Basically, your advisor can come up with additional funding to support you over the summer if you're doing research for him/her. The reason for not including summer support in the package is that some people choose to do industry internship instead.

I just confirmed my decision to attend UW. I'll be joining the CSE department. So excited!
And yes, funding information was included in the initial offer of admission.

My phone pings every time I get an email so I've spent the day getting excited any time it pings only to yell at my phone, "I don't give a $#%& if there's a sale at Old Navy!!!"

Last year there were a few late admits on here for MIT (several weeks after the initial wave of admits). My guess is that's why they don't outright reject everyone right away. That way if they don't get the people they want most, they can admit another for the same professor, or something along those lines. Or for some schools, they go over the list of everyone they're planning to reject and make sure they didn't miss anything. The only school I've seen that actually makes all decisions at the same time is Stanford.

Haha well said thissiteispoison... but, don't be too pessimistic. Maybe it won't take six years...

UW is literally the only program that I got in (so far, but pretty much), and it's my dream program! So I've been in a very dreamy state lately. I also will definitely be there during the visit days, so looking forward to meeting you guys soon!
