  1. Japanese (bungo and perhaps kanbun). Depending on where I go for my doctorate, I could have Chinese and a European lang in my future as well.
  2. Thanks, Kyjin. That was kind of what I was thinking. I imagine I will also have to (and really should) do some more language training. But, looking at the level I will most likely be placed at, that will mostly be assigned reading as well.
  3. Hey all, I will be starting in a history MA program come Fall and I know I will find out when my boots hit the ground, but here goes: Do most of you (already attending) take both grad and undergrad courses? I will be TAing but also hope to take some undergrad classes covering stuff I didn't get to as an undergrad. When I was doing my fifth year at Cal, I had a couple of classes that had both grad and undergrad students, but the grad students had a bit more work/were held to a higher standard. Is this approach common in other history programs? This was my third time applying to programs, and I finally got accepted into a few. Thanks!
  4. I was just offered two years funding for a MA at UO. I am really thinking about going here over Stanford, who has not offered any aid on paper.

Does anyone have a break down on parking at Stanford? I am thinking of living off campus and driving to school at least some days (bus or bike the rest). I used to do the same at Cal and the parking killed me. About 20 bucks a day.
  6. Yeah, I sent an email out today to the graduate coordinator. I would probably have time tomorrow to look at your SOP if you want to email it to me or msg it to me. Cheers!
  7. Yes, it looks like I will be heading for my MA first as well! I have a question for all of you about the FLAS. I missed the school deadline for one of my programs but is it possible for me to apply independently? Is anyone else here doing Asian studies with a focus on History? Congrats to all the acceptances. One thing I noticed about East Asian studies is that we seem to have all our programs at top flight institutions.
  8. Many thanks, awells27. I am still waiting on one more school, but already have so many factors running around my head. I will be contacting both the Graduate advisers and the faculty I am interested in and then start weighing pros and cons. I am sure I will have more questions to post in a week or so. Thanks to all for the help!

Yes, Stanford but no funding. And that is for a MA in East Asian Studies.

RE my query about U of O: I got the letter today. I was accepted but to the MA and waitlisted for funding. Decisions, decisions.

Thanks, kdavid. I wonder why my status on the application is still pending as they have obviously made decisions. I imagine I will get a letter tomorrow. I really like the looks of the courses they offer at U of O, but I may just go for a MA first to see if I can get myself into a top ten or twenty program. But, before I make any decisions, I would like to have all offers in front of me.
  12. Hi guys, Hope you are still monitoring this thread. I am still waiting on a couple PhD programs to get back to me, but I did get into Stanford for an MA in East Asian Studies. I understand that it is possible to get into a top tier program with a MA from a lesser school, but let me ask this: Would an MA from a great school not help more when trying to get into a Hist PhD program(assuming that the interdisciplinary focus is history and the thesis is historical)?

So, these ongoing results from University of Oregon are killing me. My website status is still "pending" although lots of people have been dropping like flies (and getting different forms of admittance?). Also, I see a ton of MA admits. Did you guys apply for MA or did they reroute a lot of PhD applicants? Thanks!
  14. Very cool, indeed!
  15. Thank you! This was my third time applying around. I was hoping for a direct path from undergrad to a Hist PhD program, but it proved difficult as an AS major. The MA should help a lot with my goals. Now, I just have to figure out how I can pay for it!
  16. Yes. Pre-modern Japanese history. Not sure about Stanford yet, but I am definitely considering it.
  17. Hi all, Isn't the Stanford MA one year? 46 units with commencement in June. So it wouldn't be 90K. I really regret not applying for all the fellowships now that they accepted me.
  18. Very true. Good luck to the both of us! I am also curious if they just got emails, what was said in the emails, and whether their online apps were updated. I got an email from my POI quite a while ago.
  19. There are a number of acceptances up, which terrifies me, as I know I had a sponsor there who recommended me to the Dept.
  20. Um, I noticed that my official scores were not posted on my Cal application. I really hope they looked at my packet, Berkeley would have been a great fit for me and I for them. And my recs were all from Berkeley people too! Anyway, on to the rest, look to the future!
  21. Yeah, that hurt. That was my first official response.
  22. For some of the schools you listed, official decisions have not been sent out, people heard from POI's. And, from what I understand, that is not a lock on admission. The "waves" of admission seem to be based on separate types of funding. I imagine they decline people who are obviously not a fit before comparing other more qualified applicants.
  23. I would be interested in a dual degree in Hist and Folklore. Come on, Berkeley!
  24. Many thanks. This is my third time around...casting a much wider net and applied to a couple MA programs too. Really, really hoping to get in with funding of some sort somewhere. Surprisingly, I feel very optimistic!
  25. Hi all, First of all, thanks for all the great contributions (especially the grad students who have already gone though this and now are looking at us from the other side). I had been in contact before deadlines with a POI at one of my less prestigious choices and had a very positive vibe from the Prof. in our back and forth emails. He recently emailed me to tell me he liked my application and that the committee agreed. He said they were recommending me for acceptance and that the dept would make the final decision. He then strongly encouraged me to go to the school that has the best fit for my interests and (perhaps most importantly) would provide the best funding. I guess they are tight on funding? He said I will learn about funding in Feb. So, my question is: How likely is it that I would not get admission at this point? Is that program dependent? I would rather not say which school at this point, to make sure I don't hurt my chances after this seemingly positive news. Thanks for the help!
