If you're moving quite a distance to school...
hamster replied to Leahlearns's topic in Officially Grads
Say you go in May to your soon to be city and sign a lease on an apt. School doesn't start until Sept however and you cannot move until right before, do you need to pay rent for the in- between months? This is pretty standard here in SF (occasionally a landlord will split the difference for an ideal tenant) but a lot of things about housing are crazy here so I don't know about the rest of the country. -
Thanks! and i'm an oldster too

I'm going to Temple so we will be neighbors Looking forward to Philly. It will be a big move for me, from San Fran. Q to those in the know: Is it ok to call it Philly? People from SF hate the nickname "Frisco" so I was wondering if it is like that.

yay! I got in off the waitlist.

I will be entering their Clinical Psych PhD program in the fall (and also moving from San Fran to Philly). Anyone else Temple (or Philly) bound?

This plan has been working for me too, focusing on the next round. and yes, I also have used this as a break-up strategy!

I am beginning to look at schools for the next application cycle and quite a few Canadian schools have profs who study my area of interest. Plus I would be really interested in living in Canada for a while. Is there anyone on gradcafe who has done this? My main questions are financial- how does it work? I am only interested in research based Clinical PhD programs that offer a tuition waiver and livable stipend. Is it possible for an American to receive this in Canada or is the only option to take out loans? Is any funding for this available from the US government besides loans? Also it appears, at least for most Canadian schools I have looked into, that someone with only a B.A. would apply to the Master's program first but may then proceed to the PhD program after completing the M.A. Is this correct? and does it have an impact on funding (since I know there is usually more money for PhD rather than MA programs)? Please forgive my ignorance, Canadians. Thanks

Yeah nada here but one waitlist. I am not expecting anything else as all my programs require interviews and they have already happened. I think I have a decent shot at the waitlist but I am already planning next year's applications.

Anyone get in and thinking of turning the offer down? I am on the waitlist and would LOVE to go!

St. Louis has been called a "20-minute city" because you can get nearly anywhere in under a half hour and many of our most popular spots are in the same area with little-to-no travel time needed to hop between them. In combination with the much-improved transit system, distance and time are never an excuse for not getting out-and-about! Even some of the best, historic neighborhoods are still affordable. You can live on a stipend and it will still allow you to take advantage of some of the best attractions St. Louis has to offer That said, Saint Louis is a great spot for young professionals who are just kicking off new careers! Forest Park (which is close to Washington University in St. Louis) has acres and acres of lovely green park space that hosts all sorts of great events. It’s also home to some great attractions, including the Missouri History Museum, Saint Louis Art Museum, Saint Louis Science Center, James S. McDonnell Planetarium, The Muny, The World’s Fair Pavilion and The Jewel Box. St. Louis is also home to The Fabulous Fox Theatre, The Edison Theatre, The Kranzberg Art Center, The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis, The Sun Theatre, The Marcelle Theater, Stray Dog Theatre, Center of the Creative Arts, Gateway Center for Performing Arts, and the Shakespeare Festival.

Do you know anyone who didn't get in anywhere? (Warning: rant)

woah. except for ethnicity- we are gradcafe twins. at least i'm not alone. don't give up yet, Jade. I know it's hard. I know, I am about ready to give up myself. We would have give up long ago if we could have but that is not who we are. We need to do this. and we don't know what tom'w brings- we may be closer than we think. -
Any post-interviewees heard anything recently? Thanks!

I will be 36 (if i get in- cross fingers!). I am single and childless except for a lovely cat. I am open to adoption at some point but I am also open to not having children/ a family as it has never been one of my priorities. This may change with age but it hasn't yet. and I think my siblings are going to have quite a few kiddies so perhaps I should focus on being an awesome, perhaps eccentric auntie. I have been the oldest person at all my interviews so it makes me feel nice to see others my age on here. Thanks gradcafe!

Yeah, I have a 3.3 undergrad and despite the fact it was 13 years ago I graduated, I have almost perfect GREs and I took challenging post-bacc courses for As, I know for a fact my app did not pass the first round at some schools and was never really reviewed because of grades I received when I was 17-21. Kinda frustrating except a couple schools did look past this. I think this may be specific to Clinical psych which is super competitive.

I got an invite on MLK day!

I'm glad I took time off. and glad I didn't go straight from undergrad but I sure do wish it had been 6 or 7 years max instead of 13.

Ah, me too. I have been waiting so long, it won't hurt to wait one more year. I'm already old so there is nothing to lose The jury is out til April but I have been brainstorming ways to improve my application and I'm actually pretty excited by some of them. If I weren't so tired of my day job..........
