Sorry I'm a little late in the game- but for what it's worth I've heard that UT isn't great with always sending rejections, so it may be in your best interest to call them directly. It also seems like their "MyStatus" check thing is on quite a delay ( there was a week lull for what I was hearing from my POI/ Grad Admissions). I also have a friend who called USF a few days ago- looks like they haven't sent out acceptances OR rejections yet. I believe their application deadline was pretty late, but geeze! Hope this helped- best of luck!

Because it seems to be at least a halfway decent program, and maybe Crazy wants to study exactly what the faculty and courses offer there.  People also apply to schools as safeties, among other reasons.

Anyway, not trying to be cold about this by any means, but I think there's little reason, really, to look at rankings for a grad program.  Ok, sure, if you want to be a professor or something, it helps having a top tier school on your PhD degree. Not to mention, top schools arguably are better off in the funding department, and all the benefits that brings with it.  Otherwise, though, so many amazing PhDs are churned out by just the top tier programs alone that many people with incredible academic backgrounds end up at schools that wouldn't be at the forefront of anyone's mind when considering so-called top programs.  However, just because they aren't at universities that are household names doesn't mean these faculty aren't great people doing incredible work, and doesn't mean that there's no reason to apply to work with them, especially if there's a great research and personal fit with them, and the institution these faculty are at.  This last bit may be a stretch, but I liken it to saying, "it's not where you do your degree, but who you do it with." (Meaning it's more about studying what you want with an amazing advisor, than it is about slogging through school to get the university name on your diploma.)

Comments and discussion welcome here, but I guess I'm trying to say there's no reason to discount the quality of an education from a school - or to question why someone would apply there - when many of the faculty at all institutions (and the research they're conducting, which - however limited - may be appealing to someone) are all incredibly qualified these days, regardless of rankings.

    Cheers!

Upvote for oddly repeating yourself without apparently being aware of it. This level of crazy is knocking at my door.

    CC2014,

I've been in two so far, but my experience and from other stories I've heard, the "interview" (at least for geoscience) is more like a meet and greet. You are typically put up with a graduate student host in your department, and that person will tell you anything you need to know about the program. For both of mine, there is a day that is more generalized, and then a day that is specific to your specialty. On the "general" day, you will get group tours of labs/ collections/ offices/ campus, and given information about funding/ requirements/ etc. For the "specialty" day, you will have one on one meetings with your POI and relevant faculty members (these are very relaxed, and quite fun! I was just asked about my broad interests and philosophy of science). These days are so much fun, but crazy exhausting! There is hardly time to make a call or use the facilities! All food is taken care of, and typically there is an opportunity to talk to students and faculty over beer.

If you a preparing for one, I wouldn't worry about "studying up" too much (I did this, and it proved useless), but make sure you understand your reasons for wanting to enter their program, and be able to talk (generally) about your research experience and what you can bring to the program. Also, if you come in with the right questions, you can get a lot of really helpful information from the graduate students. Good Luck!

Anyone else notice that no one on this thread has been admitted while obsessively refreshing their emails or doing "research" on grad cafe? It is my goal to become the first. lol.

Based on previous years data, I knew that offers would be sent out today. By the time 2 pm came around and I hadn't heard anything, I gave up for the day (because would be 5 pm where UM is located). I started doing homework for one of my courses, and at 2:07 pm I heard that I got an email through my phone. I saw the email title "UM EEB Offer of Admission" and smiled so big. Immediately texted my partner and emailed everyone that helped make this possible, tweeted, etc.
I am sooo excited and relieved that this whole process is over.

I realize all programs are different, but does anyone have any idea how long after an interview you will be notified by a program? Berkeley interviewed a month ago and no word (but I heard rejections went out to other interviewees) and I just got back from UT Austin. I will continue to be a nervous wreck until I have "a bird in the hand".

And it feels kinda tacky to ask...

Pretty much how I feel. A lot of other oceanography departments have gotten back to people and us prospective students are going to take what we can get, when we can.

PS I love the whagisgeology tumble website

Unofficial acceptance, but here is my story:

Drying hair today after a terrible morning.  The cherry on top was me bashing my head into a corner of a table.  So I finally get to dry my hair after putting some lunch in the microwave.  Phone rings in my pocket.  Area code says Newark, DE.  I start freaking out inside.  Director of graduate studies keeps saying how they were very impressed with my application and I can barely believe I'm not dreaming.  Said they want to have me there for a weekend, all-expenses paid.

Stop drying my hair, call my boyfriend, mom, best friend, sister, tell my gran who is upstairs.  Lunch is still in microwave.  It's ravioli.

These are the raviolis of victory.
