Question for you guys. Would you apply to a school where you reached out to a POI but never heard back?

Some POI's don't reply out of principle. They don't want to communicate with any students before they've read the applications. I wouldn't take a school off the table if it is a good fit just because the POI doesn't respond to your initial inquiry.

  2. I agree with Hats' post above. [Edit: Just read Hats' original post and it is excellent! Most of what follows here is a sloppier version of that]

I think that more than having a hyper specific project in mind, a SOP should try to demonstrate how you can formulate questions of anthropological interest and why the program you are applying to will help you develop those questions into a project that will produce new knowledge. Based on what you've said your broad interests are:

"(language/discourse as vehicles for power, social theory of objectivity and knowledge production, China, social media, science and environmental studies, technology and politics), "

You've got a region identified: China. You've also got some theoretical areas identified: Language and Power; Politics of Knowledge, Social Media, STS, and Environmental Anthropology. For your SOP try to identify what intersections of these areas you want to explore more and why. That could be specific enough of a project pitch at this stage so long as it is well articulated and matches up with interests at the universities you are applying to. Maybe its something about how language and social media platforms  are involved in disseminating and producing knowledge about climate change in China. I have no idea and am making something up based on..well, nothing... but I think that is the type of leap you want to make. You want to situate yourself as having the potential to do something new and interesting while also showing connections to existing areas of scholarship that the department is already working on.

The faculty know you're project will likely change. They want to see how you think.

I don't know if this helps.

Unfortunately, I think so. I was just speaking to my campus coordinator about what to expect as an alternate, and it sounds like the case with Fulbright is that no answer is a no. =(

Thanks, that's what I figured. Honestly, I wasn't holding my breath on this one.  Congrats to everyone who got good news!

Also, is anyone else annoyed by the tweets from Wenner Gren?  Just saying, if you have time to tweet, you have time to send out the results...

Sadly, I don't think the WG social media person has any knowledge about the grant stuff. They're there for the jokes.  Doesn't stop me from checking it obsessively, though.

Were you part of the 3/23 peer review for NSF?

I have a feeling WG will wait until Friday to release :(

Nope, I was on the earlier panel. But a friend who was on the 3/23 panel was recently declined.

Did he get the breakdown of how the applicants were ranked (how many competitive, high priority), etc.?

This was the breakdown I got when I was declined by NSF. This is half of the total apps.

    A. COMPETITIVE: 14 proposals (Highly Competitive: 3; Competitive: 11).

    B. NOT COMPETITIVE: 82 (Needs Moderate Revision: 23 proposals; Needs Serious Revision: 59 proposals)

Also, looks like today is not the day for WG

  7. Hey all,

This week should be the week for WG!!! Good luck to everyone

WRT NSF: I got my rejection last week by logging into fastlane. A few others in my program were also declined and a few are still pending. It looks like there will be 28 awards from 192 applicants (FYI).

  8. I'm also waiting. These are the announcement dates for the past  few years.

  9. Absolutely go read for fun on the beach. I worked through mid-August and I wish I had been able to take more time. For financial reasons that wasn't an option. But, this may be your last commitment free summer.....well, till tenure really. So, enjoy it.

  10. A note on funding. An important thing to think about once you've been accepted to places is: how am I most likely to succeed in a PhD program. For me, funding was a big part of what I felt I was going to need to do well. I didn't want to have to worry about summer funding etc slowing down my time to completion. Or, having to do other work part time to make ends meet.

Once you're in, you're in a privileged position to get to choose what is going to work best for you. Keep in mind cost of living vs stipend. Also keep in mind that private universities are going to be have better funding packages. It's unfortunately just the way it is. Some schools ae even able to negotiate your funding packages if you are being offered more somewhere else. Sadly, Michigan was not one of those places last year. Michigan has good funding. The Ivys have great funding. Just my thoughts on why I didn't end up at Michigan. It was ultimately a numbers game for me.

Hey! Sorry for the late response, but I am certain they have already sent out acceptances and waitlists because the result boards have shown a handful of acceptances and waitlists from them. Good luck though! I just got an email from Michigan's Rackham stating that I've been accepted (no email from the department yet), but if funding comes through, I am more likely to choose Michigan over Cornell. If you're on the waitlist, best of wishes

  11. And perhaps you guys might have known of this, but UT Austin has been hiring a new ling faculty member (which I've learned of by subsribing to listserv of ling anth), so I assume that's why the graduate admission related news and results are late than previous years.... ...unless I'm the only one who has not been informed of.

I'd appreciate any news from you!

     pm'd you.
