Hi Archaeostudent, I too am a linguistic anthropologist. I'm working on the intersection of language, music and social movements in the Southern Cone, broadly speaking. I've been trying to remember some of my favorite introductory readings in ling anth to recommend to your girlfriend. Some of my favorites from my undergrad intro to ling anth class: Vocal Anthropology: From the music of language to the language of song - Feld, Fox, Samuels and Porcello. These guys got me started on the intersection of language and music. http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/9780470996522.ch14/summary Lip Service on the Fantasy Lines - Kira Hall - This article talks about the empowering of sex line telephone operators through language http://www.colorado.edu/linguistics/faculty/kira_hall/articles/HALL1995.pdf How to do things with words - J.L. Austin http://www.ling.upenn.edu/~rnoyer/courses/103/Austin.pdf Language, Thought and Reality - Benjamin Whorf - this is a book, so more of an investment but definitely worth checking out. You'll hear about and debate the Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis a lot as you start into Ling Anth Some others: The object called language and the subject of linguistics - Asif Agha http://www.sas.upenn.edu/~asifagha/publications/Agha_2007a_Language%20And%20Linguistics.pdf Metapragmatic discourse and metapragmatic function - Michael Silverstein http://ebooks.cambridge.org/chapter.jsf?bid=CBO9780511621031&cid=CBO9780511621031A010 Genre, Intertextuality and Social Power - Bauman and Briggs http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1525/jlin.1992.2.2.131/abstract Indexicality - William Hanks http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1525/jlin.1999.9.1-2.124/abstract Thats probably more than enough to get her started.

I'm all out of likes today but YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY
-
I know that they aren't notifying this week. I spoke to a POI yesterday (they had a snow day) and that it may take a while to make the decision and send everything through channels. I would say mid next week at the absolute earliest unless it is coming directly from a POI
-
I've only see that one that went up. A phone call from a POI. I haven't heard anything either.
-
I think it may be best to, rather than focus on the rejection in your email, focus on areas of growth. Maybe say that while you were disappointed with the result, you wondered if POI had any suggestions or comments to not only work on your application for next year but to also further your development in the field. Try to put a positive spin on it, even though you are bummed.
-
That sounds like the department approved you and it just has to go through channels. Very good sign!
-
Seconded!
-
Congratulations Strudelle!!!!
-
FYI - UPenn has a snow day today. So if you are waiting to hear from them, give yourself the day off and relax. We probably won't know anything until next week.
-
Hang in there Forsaken. There is good news out there for you yet!
-
Yea.... I'm having a way better go of it than I expected. To be fair though, I don't live too far outside of Philly. So, it was also a convenience thing. My POI basically said if I had any questions or wanted to see the campus, I should come by and I took advantage of it.
-
I have a feeling Penn will be next week. They said mid-feb when I interviewed back in Dec. but with the snow I'd tack on a few days.
-
Last year there was a press release with the winners on April 5th. my guess is around then this year too.
-
Thanks Jump! I've heard such great things about the program. I'm excited to visit!
-

-

-
Hahaha I'm with you. I just checked the website twice in a row as if those 30 seconds were really going to make a difference.
-
So sorry guys! I haven't heard anything yet. Fingers crossed!
-
I'm so sorry! Did you email them to check? I'm trying so hard to resist doing that.
-
Hi all, New to this thread. Does anyone know what happens if you were to win the NSF or receive an honorable mention but not end up attending the university you listed in your application? It seems like a very embarrassing situation to me and I'm just wondering if anyone has any thoughts or advice on the subject.
