  1. Yes and No. My primary interests are civil society organizations (environmental movements), and specifically am looking at the Japanese anti-nuclear movement. So for my PoliSci PhD application, I applied to do research on environmental politics, as there were several profs at UW that do similar things.
  2. Thies is at Arizona now? When did he move from UCLA?
  3. So here is what I know, however much it may be relevant to you. I am native in both English and Japanese. University of Washington does not offer Japanese classes for Native speakers. Hence, I cannot apply to FLAS in Japanese for my work here at UW as there are no Japanese language courses that cater to native speakers. However, I had let UW know from the onset that I am a native speaker of Japanese, and hence I can't do Japanese here. If UofC doesn't know that you're a native, or, they have native-level Farsi courses, then I assume you can apply for FLAS with Farsi. But that's just a guess.
  4. I got the same email today. When I saw the email subject line, I jumped, only to find that they are just telling me that they are processing it. Rather unamusing, for sure. The email's all I got. Second cycle here for applications, so am rather antsy here, but all we can do is wait, I guess. Good luck to both of you too.
  5. Thanks HopefulNeurotic. I try to keep my chin up as much as I can, but I am rather fatalistic this cycle. If I don't get in somewhere this cycle, I am starting to give up and go into the corporate sector.
  6. Seeing that people are being interviewed for UWashington, I am assuming that if I don't get interviewed, I am kinda screwed again for this cycle?
  7. Has anyone applied this year or in previous years to University of Hawaii-Manoa through the East-West Center for the Graduate Fellowship? If so, is the admissions process much different from UHM in general?
  8. I am assuming that, if they follow last year's track, University of Washington announcing admits this week?
  9. No, we're talking about UWashington. I saw that they did interview last year as well. Thanks for the reminder. I am in my second cycle, and am not as optimistic as I was last year...
  10. As I was last year, I am getting rather tired of waiting for the emails...
  11. Has anyone claimed the UWashington admit? What subfield?
  12. I don't know how relevant it may be, but I applied to the MEd Social and Cultural Foundations at UW as a potential option aside from the other PhD apps I sent off this year.
  13. I think what it comes down to is for the Profs to be able to talk to you, and see if you're willing to make the move, regardless of how far or expensive the move may be. I was interviewed in as a late admit last year to Univ. of Washington, and I think that the interview was the main reason I got it as well as the funding.
  14. First post in a year. Can anyone claim the University of Washington PoliSci PhD interview? Getting antsy as I am feeling that I may not have made the cut for UW PoliSci again.
  15. Here we go again. I have to start finding PhD programs to apply to this coming application cycle. Got into a MA Japan Studies program at UWashington as a late admit, and been allowed exemption from all language courses (I'm multilingual), and so the MA will finish by the end of Summer 2015. Hence I need to apply this year again to PhD programs. My field is Comparative, with a specialization in Japanese Social Movements. I am wondering if I should just stick to UW and only apply there, or if I should apply to multiple programs. I don't know how much of an edge internal applicants have in graduate programs. Preferably, I would like to stay in the US, with funding. Any ideas where I should start looking? Also, could I have some advice on the viability of getting a PhD in International Studies? UW offers a wonderful PhD IS program, but I don't know of anyone with that degree getting hired... Cheers, and good luck to all.
  16. Hi. I am moving from Tokyo to Seattle to attend UW from AQ. MA Japan Studies here. Am sincerely worried about finding housing before moving, as I cannot see the place before going, since I am on the other side of the Pacific. Moving with my unmarried significant other, and so could not get family housing, and Radford Court is already filled. Any information on what real estate sites/agent are legitimate, and what a feasible commuting distance is would be appreciated. Thanks
  17. Just thought I'd check in again. After my initial application cycle came to a close in late March, I was contacted by UW if I was interested in going as a late admit to their Jackson School MAIS program. I jumped on the chance, and I am officially now admitted and moving to Seattle this coming August. Thank you everyone, for the support you've given me. And if anyone has any suggestions as to relocation tips, etc, I am all ears...
  18. Thanks for the reply. Will do that in a bit then.
  19. Why is it taking Harvard and JHU to send out rejections? Aren't they done accepting already? And also, why do many get emailed by POIs regarding rejections and none of mine have sent any personal notes...? Just wondering.
  20. Claiming Temple rejection. With only 2 programs at Harvard remaining, I am moving on, possibly applying to 3 UK schools now. Thank you for the support that you all have given me through this forum. Couldn't have done this alone. Congratulations to everyone who got in, and Good luck to all.
  21. So... Are Temple and Harvard going to announce this week? And what happened to JHU's rejections?
  22. Having to wait for the top school and the bottom school on my list of applications is rather bothersome. Why does Temple have to wait around the same time till Harvard announces? It's like a sudden-death match for me.
  23. Temple Grad chair Kevin Arceneaux told me yesterday that they hadn't processed all applications just yet, and the results will be out soon. So I wouldn't lose hope on Temple... At least that's my last hope.
