Just got my first wait list notification. Should I respond?
Meanyus replied to ydftf's topic in Waiting it Out
You can just send a short email letting them know that you hope to hear back from them with some good news, and until then you will be patiently waiting. Even if the latter is not true. -
Hey All, It's looking more and more like I will be ending up at NCSU for the next few years. Has anyone had any experience with Western Manor or E.S. King apartments in the past year or so that you wouldn't mind sharing? I will be moving with my wife, our 2 year old, and we're hoping to have another child in the next year or so. Are these apartments close enough to walk/bike to campus? Are the bus lines in the area convenient for travel overall? We will have 1 car but I would like to use public transit for the most part. We were hoping to get a 3BR in our price range but I'm not sure if that is feasible. My quick read through of the thread focused mostly on Chapel Hill and I'm quickly running out of time on my lunch break. If anyone has suggestions for 3BR apartments or houses in Raleigh, that would be wonderful too! Thanks!

Hey Delonj, I too was accepted by NC State but I only received an email from the graduate school, not the department itself. Did they mention anything about a visit weekend? How much the funding is etc? I was going to call in a bit when my son goes to lay down for a nap and it's a bit quieter around the house. Thanks! Edit: Just got an email from the department after posting this. I have to wait to hear about funding. Also the case for Utah for me. Always the bridesmaid!

Not for interpersonal but I have a coworker who also was accepted to Kansas. She was told Wednesday that they have all their funding offers out at the moment and the only way that she would receive funding is if someone declines or they find some more money in the budget somewhere. For what it's worth, I don't think that's a death sentence. I was told the exact same thing by Utah but it still sounds like I'll be getting a funding offer after I go out there for the visit weekend in a couple weeks. Still sucks though.

I'd wait until you make a decision and only send them to that school. No need to incur any additional costs. As far as UW, from the letter my coworker received, it sounded like they only took 3 people for the entire department. She also said that there were nearly 300 applicants. Kind of glad the wife didn't want to move to the midwest again now!

I agree. I would just tell them that I have already made the decision to accept an offer and would like to withdraw my application so that they may spend their time considering other applicants. I feel it is actually a better thing to if you think you might be accepted, because it means they can throw another applicant on the waitlist, since you won't be taking up a spot.

Finding an apartment in a city I've never been to?!
Meanyus replied to febreze's topic in Officially Grads
I would recommend not paying for this. You can find places you like online and call the property manager. Many of these property manages are real estate agents who manage a few different places. You can tell them your budget and what you are looking for and they will be able to tell you what they have available if anything. My wife and I spent about 2 hours on Craigslist checking out potential places, we'll compile a list of the top 10, then give those people calls for when we fly out at the end of the month. -
My experience applying to Boulder was not fantastic. I had originally sent my unofficial transcripts, which the application made it seem was acceptable. I found out months later after the application confirmed that it had everything it needed to find out that it was not the case. As I tried to remedy the situation, I was blown off fairly hard by the office staff, Julie, who understandably was probably tired of dealing with people's applications. I did exactly what she asked me to the day we talk, and was told by her to call a week later to make sure the school had received the official transcripts. On that phone call she was pretty rude to me asking why I had not done this earlier and informing me that I would probably not get in because my application was not completed in time. I just told her that I understand and was only doing whatever I could in my power and would let the chips fall where they fall. I am honestly relieved I wasn't accepted because the only reason I applied was because my wife wanted to stay near her family. Now that I'm forced to move I've killed two birds with one stone!

Congrats Leb. I unfortunately was not accepted, but being rejected from Penn doesn't really hurt when you consider the amount and quality of people from which they get to choose. I don't mind sharing publicly my stats that did not get in. Undergrad GPA 3.592 with a 4.0 in my major of Comm Studies. GRE scores of 157V 154Q and 5AW. Graduate GPA of 3.92. I had a strong SOP and LORs but after spending another three months with my writing sample, I have found some flaws that make me wish I had not been as ambitious in sending my most recent work. Only 3 more programs for me to hear from before I take the plunge!

I got lucky with two notices today. Unfortunately they were my bottom two choices. The wait continues! I should clarify that. I am actually incredibly excited to possibly work with the people at Utah, but their stipend is expected to be around 14K, which is probably not viable because I have a wife and a kid.

Is that in the Journalism and Technical Communication department? If so, one of my friends from the program has heard, but they also asked him to apply to the program so he knew he was getting in. I could ask him if he knows when they are meeting.

I feel a lot better about my score if I use my graduate GPA :-(

Women's and gender studies theory question
Meanyus replied to Imaginary's topic in Interdisciplinary Studies
What sarab suggested is an excellent starting place. The is an inherent problem in the question in that there are so many sections of feminist theory that it is difficult to send you in a particular direction. Could you describe what you are doing research for so that we might give you a better reading list? -
Jenste hit the nail on the head. If I were in your shoes, I would talk with a professor or your RA adviser. Every program is different but I know the people in my program are very cognizant of students who are struggling with depression. I had a student commit suicide last semester, which noticeably shook me. My thesis adviser actually offered to let me take a leave of absence for a few weeks if I needed to get my shit in order. I ultimately declined to take them up on that offer because I wanted to get back to my students, but I know that being honest with my adviser was extremely beneficial when I was going through a pretty difficult time.

While I'm glad you've found a way to get through your current lease, you actually do have the right to not be annoyed by your neighbors when you live in an apartment. Not in the sense that you don't like when she eats your cereal, but if her behavior is causing you a severe drop in quality of life, you can do something about it. Our little slice of heaven actually just had a group evicted after being here for 2 months because they were loud and leaving cigarettes on other people's windshields. I didn't appreciate them waking up my baby every night but I actually wasn't the a part of the group of people who got them evicted because our lease is up soon anyways. A quick google search of Texas tenant's rights shows: Peace and Quiet Your rights as a tenant include the right to "quiet enjoyment," as it is called in the law. This means the landlord cannot evict you without cause or otherwise disturb your right to live in peace and quiet. If other tenants in your building are disturbing you, you should complain to the landlord. The landlord has a duty to see that you are protected from other tenant's wrongful behavior. Of course, you may not disturb other tenants, either. Except under certain circumstances and subject to certain conditions, a landlord may not interrupt utilities to a tenant unless the interruption results from bona fide repairs, construction, or an emergency. That said, I realized it's a bit of an idealized statement that they should fix the problem. But like I said earlier, they have no reason to help you because you've already told them that you will not only put up with your current situation until your current lease is up, but also that you are going to sign another lease with them. It's good that you've figured out a system to make it through your current lease, so it's probably not worth the effort of raising hell now. Have you talked with them about some sort of out for you if they place you with another shitty roommate next year though?

Is the 3.33 the minimum or the average? It seems an odd number to have as a minimum, but if it is the average, it means that they take people both above and below that mark. Honestly, being .01 off probably isn't going to kill you. It really depends on how your marks look in comparison to the other people who applied.

Readmission after being kicked out of program
Meanyus replied to HistoryBritt's topic in Coursework, Advising, and Exams
As awful as it is to hear, it sounds like they are gently trying to tell you that you are not going to be readmitted. I know you said it's not what you want, but I think they are trying to tell you to focus your energy on another program. As far as what to tell people, the truth doesn't hurt. You got a C in one class, every grad student knows that is a death sentence. Tell them you're hoping there is something you can do about it and you are biding your time until that decision is made. -
Kid isn't that smart. He doesn't even have sand in his sandbags. Just kidding.
