It seems like Vanderbilt’s MO is to inform all accepted and wait listed candidates and then wait about three or four days before sending out their rejections. We should all be hearing before the end of the week, I’d guess. Berkeley is the same way.

I’m not a Minnesota applicant, but I just thought I’d chime in that there is another acceptance posted, so the first one likely ​wasn’t a mistake. Arizona State is doing the same thing this year--admissions waves wherein they first accept people who they REALLY want and reject those that they really don’t want, then a second round, etc...

Haha I don’t think I’m smooth enough to pull that off. At this point, 6 of my schools are reporting and I’m assuming rejection from all of them. As much as I hate waiting, I’m kind of hoping to just hear back something positive before they all start to notify me of my rejection.

Was it any of you guys who just posted the new UC Davis acceptance? That makes me think I shouldn’t give up hope yet. I’m wondering if they actually received it today, or if it came in a couple of days ago with the others.

I’ve decided that all PhD rejections should be accompanied by chocolate and wine. When I come to power, it’s going to be a rule.

Meanwhile, in Utah...I’m not lying when I say that they won’t cancel school for anything less than a white out or full blown blizzard. Last year, we had three weeks straight where the temperature didn’t rise above -16 and there was about 3 1/2 feet of snow on the ground at any given time. No cancellations.

It is nice to have this community support group, isn’t it? As terrible as feeling anxious about all of this is, it’s nice that there are others in the same situation who understand. Friends and family members just don’t quite seem to get the significance of all of it.

Seriously. I applied to 14 schools and I’m sitting here thinking I should have doubled that.

The best advice I ever received about Rochester was to NOT live in Rochester, itself, if you can help it. Live in the surrounding communities, which are safer, cleaner, and less depressing.

I, too, am sinking into the miserable pit of depression. I’m sure we all feel the exact same way: how the hell have I worked this hard and feel so damn inadequate? I’m trying to think of all of the money that I’ve put in to try to make myself marketable for PhD programs. It’s depressing me even more: Application Fees: ~$3,500 Master’s Program: ~$20,000 14 Conferences Presentations: $10,000 **Therapy: $100,000,000 **I haven’t technically started yet, but this is the projected cost of my emotional damage. Oy vey. I can’t believe I’ve killed myself for the last six years and can feel so completely worthless in this moment. Sob story = over

FYI, a friend of mine just got an acceptance from New Mexico’s American Studies program. So it looks like they are notifying, in case anyone is applying there!

I didn’t hear this, but it makes sense. I typically listed two or three people and the reasons I wanted to work with them. Who knows? Maybe that screwed me.

I emailed my POI and asked what I could do to become a more competitive applicant in the future. Warning: It’s a risky game; some people get annoyed when you do it and some don’t respond at all. I was told by my mentor to not do it because you typically get a terse response, so I was actually really surprised to hear back. I’d met my POI at a conference, though, so I thought I’d give it a shot.
