  1. Last year they did their interview invitations at the same time as most other schools - late January or so. Interview weekend was a few weeks later. Acceptance came some time in March, if I remember correctly.
  2. Can anybody suggest good apartment complexes for out-of-towners near Vandy? I'd like to keep it under a grand a month for rent if I can.
  3. This is exactly it. TFA does NOT want the majority of its teachers to stay in the classroom. It wants to identify promising future leaders and give them a taste of the educational struggles and injustice faced by disadvantaged populations and those who serve them, with the hope that these people will work to change the educational system for the better in their future careers - be that politics, law, school leadership, whatever. (This is the normative view - some might say this mission has been complicated by the agendas of the private corps/foundations who support TFA financially). I valued my TFA time and it did get me permanently into education, though I am no longer a classroom teacher. If you want to be a career educator, though, you're better off with a traditional training experience.
  4. Aurora is a suburb east of Denver, but they are pretty much directly connected to each other. You can get from Anschutz to downtown via Colfax or one of its parallel streets in about 25 minutes. A popular place to live that is also convenient to Anschutz is the Lowry area. You might also want to look into living in Park Hill and the City Park area - a little more quiet and residential, but in between Anschutz and the main scene in Denver. I lived just west of City Park and worked in Aurora. The drive took about 20 minutes during rush hour. PM me if you would like anymore information about life in Denver. I was not a med student so I can't speak to Anschutz itself.
  5. Nice rational thinking, chigirl. When you think about it, the 1-year program at Harvard (and Stanford too) seems to have been created more for the schools' benefit than the students. They can turn students in and out twice as fast and attract more students who will pay full sticker (30-40k for an education over one year vs. double that for 2 years). I think you make a good point, chigirl, when you say it seems Vandy might be more invested in you - seeing you as a scholar rather than a product. One year may seem great at the outset, especially if you plan on diving right back into the field - you can have a degree so fast! - but if you want to build relationships, get the attention needed to develop your skills, and stay in academia, maybe the 2-year Peabody program is better? And, my two cents: I think the fact that there are so many threads here where people agonize between Vanderbilt and Ivy Schools/Stanford shows that Vanderbilt's name recognition and reputation have increased quite a bit in recent years.
  6. Bump! I'm in for LPO! My heart is racing.
  7. Hey for which specific ed concentration? You can PM me if you want. I applied to the same places.
  8. Cary Elwes was in Glory with Morgan Freeman Morgan Freeman was in Invictus with Matt Damon Matt Damon was in Contagion with Jennifer Ehle Jennifer Connelly, John Travolta
  9. I haven't heard anything either. But thanks for the info, SheWrote! Looks like it will be soon.
  10. I disagree that you shouldn't email. If it is well past when you were told to expect to hear something (if there is even any information about that at all), and especially if you're seeing other results from the same school and major show up, then you are well within your rights to ask the admissions office when you might expect a decision, or if one has already been made.
  11. With a decision as huge as graduate school, remember it's you and not your parents who will be pouring your sweat, blood, tears, and years into it. I'm sure they mean well, but sometimes people hear the name "Harvard" and can't think beyond it. If you loved Vanderbilt more, then go! Just tell them it's the "Harvard of the South."
  12. I'm in the same boat. Deciding between top-3 program and top-10. The top 10 is an absolutely ping-pong research fit, but I can't help but wonder if my overall prospects would be better if I went with the higher ranked program (which boasts great location, nice atmosphere, and pretty good research opportunities). The best advice I got was to do as much research as I could up front, take my time, and once I make a decision, not to waste time looking back (sort of what Bryc said). Easier said than done. Good luck.
  13. Hey Lucero, good luck to you too! Always encouraging when students want to go back.
  14. The results board is rather quiet concerning Virginia, and I think Curry looks like a nice place to be. Did anybody else apply or interview there? I'm going for PhD, but just curious about others' experiences with them.
  15. TakeruK that is extremely helpful! The meaning of "research fit" is exactly what I'm pondering here - I know that either school will give me the start that I want, but yes, one will be more specialized in what I want to study, while both will vault me into the field as a fully capable researcher. Thank you sooo much for your advice.
  16. Accepted to two programs. One ranks top 5 year after year, lots of excellent funding, huge research budget, private. Decent - but not spot on - research fit. Big city. The other public but still selective, top 10 or 12 or so, public. Very very good research fit with the faculty. Small town. Funding from both is equal. Cost of living is about equal too. So can we talk about it again - when it comes to life after PhD, what's more important? Prestigious program or lots of experience in projects that match my specific research interest? For the record, this is not the hard sciences - I'm going in for ed policy. Please and thank you. Ugh this is difficult.
  17. Hi there, I was accepted too! The professor who contacted me told me she hopes to find out at the end of February or early March.
  18. I'm in the same boat. I interviewed three weeks ago and nothing. They told me they'd let me know "by the end of the month" - I assumed that meant January, I suppose it meant February? Lots of people say no news is good news but so far I have learnt from experience that this is not the case, so yeah - lots of restlessness and fidgeting for now.
  19. I got the exact same letter from SHIPS, rejection with the Masters offer. Looks like they must send all or quite a few of their applicants to masters land.
  20. Having talked to the department a little before applying, I know that years past have not seen a lot of funding allocated for masters students. It's only a one-year program if you do POLS. I was rejected, too.
  21. Based on campus atmosphere and town life alone, I'd go with Boulder. Rent's a little high though. No clue when it comes to program quality though, sorry.
  22. Resurrecting this topic. Anybody have a personal experience to share? I had an interview 3 weeks ago and haven't heard anything. Can't be a great sign . . . :-/
