  1. I have been admitted to several material science programs, but recently have found an interest in more of the EE side of things. Would it be ethical to change PhD departments after getting a masters in material science, IF I find that I have a strong passion for EE, and not as much for Mat Sci? What if I not only switched departments but also universities? Has this been done before? Again, I am still not sure if my passion for EE will fully develop, but I am concerned that if it does, that I should have waited and reapplied to EE programs directly, instead of starting a MatSci program. FYI, my POI's have either been in EE departments, or related to solid state research, so the transition would be easier.
  2. Go to the cheapest one. So TAMU. I believe UCSB is the best academically (IMO), but its not worth 47k a year. In fact, most graduate degrees are worth only -$15k (meaning you should be getting at least $15k from them). Plus living in SB is expensive, like ridiculously expensive. So on top of $47k a year you would have to pay at least an extra $10k for rent alone. If I were you I would wait and reapply next year to programs with funding. Or at least go with the cheapest one since they are all really good schools.
  3. Im in the same position with UCSB (no decision yet) and Austin (reply to decision now!). I decided to wait for the hope that UCSB would accept me. Its a risk, but I thought it was worth it. Best of luck. I hope you get into USC, it is a really great school.
  4. Trying to go to the Stans (Afghanistan, Kyrgyzstan, etc.) My parents think I will captured by the Taliban. But at least I have a better chance of surviving being captured and brutally tortured by the Taliban than I do making it through a engineering PhD program.
  5. University of Arizona is definitely one of the best (if not the best) place for geology. Go there. Follow the money.
  6. Both are very good schools. I would always choose money. I don't really like NYC/Jersey area, so for me it would be a no brainer to go to NCSU. Good luck to you!
  7. Do not take on this debt. I don't think a degree in Critical Theory is lucrative enough to make that large of a debt worth it. You gotta ask yourself, is this degree going to make me enough money to pay off the debt in a reasonable amount of time AND live reasonably. I got into a top ranked program in my field and it would most likely make me tons of money after, but I rejected it because of the large debt (approximately 70k). So for me large debt is never worth it regardless of return on interest. For you (and many others) it could very well be worth it. Good luck and let us know what you decide!
  8. Seeing that it is an MS I would choose the higher ranked one in CS. If you are trying to get a CS job companies know (and care) more about what university gave you a degree. By this I mean they would rather choose a from a top 10 (not an ivy, but still very reputable all around), rather than a top 30 that is an ivy. So for me I would choose the better program rather than the "bigger" name. However, both of these schools are amazing so I would assume it wont make that big of a difference in the long run.
  9. My parents said they would spank me if I dont get a nobel prize and a PhD.
  10. G/G VG/VG G/G I got it!.....jk I am crying myself to sleep.
  11. I bet the NSF people are on this thread right now giggling at all of our posts of anguish...
  12. FastLane my ass! Its more like SlowLane!
  13. I got a relative that works for a subsidiary of amazon, and he consistently goes to ucsd to interview students, but not ucla. I would choose ucsd. Good city, weather, rep, cheaper, etc. Good luck to you and your endeavors! But I am biased because I dont really like LA as a city... Both are great programs so you can't go wrong with what you choose.
  14. Yea same. I hope we find out soon... I have a few friends that were accepted and got interviews and invited to visitation. I also saw saw rejects already on results page. So I guess we are on the waitlist.
  15. $100k is a ton of money. You should only take on that debt with a more lucrative field of study (i.e. computer science) AND at top universities like MIT or Berkeley. I dont know much about international affairs but I don't think you can get job that has a starting salary large enough to make the $100k seem worth it. Do you have anyoffers that are funded? Or any jobs/internships lined up that you could do instead?
