  1. Welcome, moda, and congratulations on your acceptance!  You can rely on us!  I've definitely been relying on these forums, too!

I wish folks would post stats, too.  We're not gonna criticize you, we promise! If anything, we're gonna love you! I think some folks posting in results search might not even know this sociology sub-forum exists ... I hope that's not the case!

  2. My good friend will be at a table that same time at SWS, but I'll try to swing by your table as well because your research sounds SO great!!

Unfortunately, I can't attend your presentation at ESS because I'll be at a reception for the Repro Mini-Conference ... but your second paper sounds amazing as well!

I'm glad, too!! It's so great to meet you!  Cylon6 is also attending ESS!

That's so great to hear about your interest in Ann Bell, too!  Hey, that's ok that she's not your first choice, I understand!  I think UDel has so many great people with distinct specializations!! :D

  3. UCSB

    UCSC

    CUNY

    Northeastern

    U of Oklahoma

    U of Florida

    U of South Florida

    Boston U

    U of Delaware

    SUNY Albany

    Temple U

    Georgia State

    Portland State

I am going to give it a few days but I am assuming rejections from: U of Florida, UCSB, UCSC, and possibly Northeastern

Delaware!!! Me too!!! Ann Bell is gonna be at ESS if she's a POI for you!  She's presiding over the session where I'm presenting.  I freaked out when I found out!

  4. That's definitely a great reason to attend conferences! During my application year, I contacted my POIs ahead of time and asked if they would be at the upcoming major conference and if I could talk to them. I got to meet a good number of profs and their students/postdocs this way. This commonly happens in my field as prospective students applying to our school have come up to talk to my colleagues and I once they see the institution name on our nametags! Also, one school I applied to gave us a list of profs who were attending the upcoming meeting and encouraged applicants to seek these profs out during the meeting.

In my field, it is abnormal for a student to present at a conference out of their own pocket though. Usually, the supervisor of the work will fund the trip and/or the student can get funding from agencies such as the conference organizers or groups at their home campus that will fund this. I do know a few students who did not present work that did end up attending some conferences for a few days just to make the networking connections. In one student's case, they had previously won an award at their home campus and were using that prize money to attend, which I think is a pretty good investment! Otherwise, spending $500-$1000 to attend a distant conference may be tough for many students' budgets and I am not 100% sure it's worth it if you can't spare that money. It may be possible to attend a conference for much much less if it's close by and/or if you volunteer to help with registration etc. (usually will get you free registration and maybe some meals too).

I got an email from my POI inviting me to a reception for our "mini-conference" within the bigger conference.  I thanked her for the invitation and told her I was looking forward to meeting her, but I couldn't bring myself to say I was applying to her school's program because I didn't want to sound pushy, I guess??

Well, it's kind of awkward for me.  I just graduated in December, so I don't qualify for undergrad funding, and I don't qualify for grad student funding because I'm not a grad student.  I think one of the conferences I'm attending might have a low-income program that can reimburse qualifying members up to $300.  My thesis advisor also said she's going to look into departmental funds to see if I can get about $200 more in reimbursement!  So, if I get that $500, I'll be quite happy. I also get reimbursed $60 for working at the registration table of one of the conferences =)

So yes, I would advise keeping an eye out for any sort of funding possibility, no matter if you're an undergrad and qualify for clear-cut funding or if you're in a weird situation like I am! =)

  5. I am presenting at SWS this weekend and at ESS. What are the titles of your papers?

Absolutely lovely to hear!!!  The title of my paper is "Religious Frames and the Contraceptive Clause of the Affordable Care Act"

I'm presenting on Friday at the 7:15 AM Roundtable Sessions (Table 16) at SWS and I'm presenting on Friday at 8:30 AM at the Policies Around Reproductive Health Care and Access Mini-Conference at ESS!

What are the titles of your papers?  I hope to see you there!!

And welcome to the thread! Where all have you applied? =)

  6. I got ... really lucky, I found out.

Nope, I didn't hear back from any schools yet.  However, I was lamenting the fact that I didn't mention actually professor/faculty names in my SOP.  Instead, I listed my interests and sent them my thesis.

I was looking one of the program's websites and I thought "Man, it would be so cool to work with this professor ... her research interests match mine perfectly!"

I'm presenting at a conference in a few weeks, and so I checked to see if anyone from the programs I'm applying to will be present while I'm presenting!

The presiding member of my presentation session?  The very person I was so interested in!! I get to present my thesis findings in front of her!  On top of that, I get to go to a reception with her and a few others later that evening!

This made me feel better about applying to just three schools!

  7. I expect to be doing more of the same of what I'm doing now.  I'm basically my grandmother's caretaker here at home, and I get about 10 hours per week at my part-time retail job.

I'm an awkward December graduate, so I have this chunk of 8 months or so before I go back to school.

If I get rejected from all three places?  I did mention in the "If I don't get accepted, I'll ... " thread that I'll likely retake the GRE and try to find a better job before reapplying for 2015.

  8. Thanks guys. I didn't really think it would make a big difference... But you never know. I went to Villanova for undergrad! Maybe I knew your grand pop. Jk jk.

Well it was good that you checked. Hahaha grandpop graduated ages ago! If you time traveled, perhaps, you could have met him. =p  He enjoyed his time there!!

  9. My grandpop went to St. Francis for undergrad and Villanova for graduate school for History.  Yep, he was Catholic, going to Catholic-affiliated schools throughout his entire education.  He taught a Catholic high school for 36 years after that.

Contrast that with my thesis advisor who is Jewish and was considering a teaching position at Villanova at one point.  So they liked both my grandpop and my thesis advisor, too.

I think what matters most to them is the strength of your application.  Your question is a good one though.  Plus, some religiously affiliated graduate schools are SO selective that they simply don't have the room to be selective based on religious affiliation.

  10. My top choice is my top choice because:

    1. one or more faculty members have research interests that match mine perfectly

    2. it is a great program overall that gained my thesis advisor's immediate approval when I asked for advice

    3. location is close to home

    4. great opportunities for funding

    5. I'll have free lodging with my boyfriend's parents if I attend (they live 20 minutes from campus and offered to let me live with them if I go there)

    6. beautiful campus where I instantly felt at home

  11. I didn't back-read in this thread, but I must add my two cents.

I just invested over $1,000 in getting to two conferences, and a huge benefit that I had no idea would happen just happened.

I applied to three universities, but in my SOP, I didn't mention any faculty/professors' names ... I have been kicking myself ever since for merely including my interests rather than people!!!

I was going through the program for the conference where I'll be presenting in a few weeks.  I'll be presenting during a mini conference within a larger conference, and the presiding member is none other than someone from one of the universities I applied to ... and she's the one I want to work with should I be accepted to that university's program!!  She is going to hear me present my thesis research and everything!!  I couldn't have asked for a better arrangement!

So yes, even besides the manifest benefits, there are latent, unexpected benefits to going to conferences, even when it's hard to find funding or reimbursement!!

  12. Yes!!  I had 389 coding sheets, one for each newspaper article I coded.  One day, my thesis advisor and I were talking things over at our weekly meeting, and she started writing down a few words ... and then we came up with how to turn complete chaos into beautiful organization.

Our reaction to the breakthrough?  We both just started laughing hysterically.

  13. The movie you are talking is Called Admission... Bad movie in my opinion. Enough to make you upset about adcoms too...

Thanks for letting me know, EngineerGrad! I've only seen those five minutes ... yes, that's enough to make me uneasy about the adcom process.  I know it's just a movie, but still!

  14. I've only started imagining the actual adcom meeting scenario because of some movie that was on the tv in the living room the other day.

My gran was watching it, so the TV was on full blast so she could hear it properly.  I only heard a bit of dialogue before she decided to mute it so that she could hear my mom talking to her.

I don't know what the movie was called, but this undergrad adcom was slashing through applicants' red file folders left and right.  Tina Fey was on the adcom. But, from what I could tell, Tina Fey actually saw an image of the applicant pop up as they were talking over their file, as if they were right there in the room with the adcom. Sometimes, Tina Fey felt sympathy and spoke up for them.

I guess I imagine the adcom setting like that, and so I hope that I'm the type of applicant to not get slashed by the Tina Fey of the adcoms.  Nothing nearly elaborate as OP's scenario.

  15. @gingin6789 - I go to Lehigh now for my M.A.! I'm graduating in May, applying to Ph.D. programs for Fall '14 now. Best of luck - you sound like a great candidate! Lemme know if you have any questions about our program :)

you just made me melt into happiness!!! Lehigh is my number one choice.  My research interests line up so perfectly with Dr. Lasker's, yet I failed to mention her name in my SOP and I've been kicking myself ever since.  She has been an absolute pleasure to talk to on the phone as well when I had questions regarding the application process as well!

I'm so sorry that I won't get to meet you in person if I end up going there!  I visited the campus in October and felt instantly at home.  No one was there because it was Fall break, but it was a wonderful experience.  I'll definitely message you with questions about the program.  You have made me SO excited!! Thank you so much for reaching out to me!!

I was so giddily flustered that I forgot to say congratulations on your Rutgers interview!!!! Best of luck to you!!!

  16. The whole FAFSA-avoidance thing just baffles me. It takes maybe 5mins or so to fill out the forms online and hit submit.. you just need to have your last set of taxes handy.

And yet people still avoid it. I don't get it.

I always dreaded the FAFSA before I turned 24 because of one thing: my parents' tax information.  They're separated now, but it always took them past March 15 to get their taxes done.  This drove my FAFSA anxiety level sky-high!

I'm assuming other prospective grad students or current grad students don't dig the FAFSA is because their parents may have done it for them throughout undergrad.  So maybe, for them, it's like doing taxes for the first time (a bit intimidating at first, but so easy once you get the hang of it).

  17. I am with you on UMD! If you haven't seen this already, you may be interested in this blog: http://familyinequality.wordpress.com/ by a professor there.

Oh I am just praying they'll take me ... I had no idea how competitive it was until recently! I guess I was kinda just trying to put rank in the back of my mind until I got my applications finished.

That is an excellent blog!!  Dr. Cohen is AMAZING!!! Thank you for the link!!

    Congrats to you, curiouslyoptimistic!!

Maleficent, I'm fortunate that no one here ever asks about hearing back.  They are all wondering why I'm so worried about it, though.  I am just praying I get accepted at one of these schools ... I do have these programs ranked, but if I get in to any of the three I've applied to, I will be elated!!

  18. Hey there.  I just did my taxes and am a seasoned FAFSA filler-outer.  Five long years!!!

I don't know if I should fill out my FAFSA, however, because I haven't been accepted or rejected anywhere yet.  I do want to make the March 15th preferred submission date for full consideration of grants and loans though! Should I just put down all the schools I applied to on my FAFSA and cut as needed if I get rejected or get other funding?

    Thanks for you help!
