  1. walter, this has been one of the worst winters in a while for us.  It's always been just enough accumulation, ice, or temperature to have school and work cancelled multiple times for millions of residents!!  Last winter was unusually mild, so it probably made the decision process that much faster!

  2. I've spent so much time waiting it out on grad cafe that this conversation happened at a conference with a stranger:

Other person: so where have you applied?

Me: Maryland, Lehigh, and Delaware; it has been so tough waiting it out!

Other person: oh actually, I think I've seen you around on Grad Cafe.

Yep.  A stranger recognized me because I post so often on grad cafe hahaha. This person was super nice though, and I'm so glad I got to meet them!!

  3. I'm waiting on PENN as well.

For Penn, specifically, be it UPenn or Penn State, the reason why acceptances/rejections are being sent out later this year could be a variety of reasons ... but a BIG one might be the weather!!

Down here in central PA, my alma mater has cancelled at least four days of classes when, in years past, they wouldn't cancel class for anything!  I'm sure this weather has pushed back adcom meetings across the northeast which really sucks!

I was thinking about how UMD sent out rejections/acceptances earlier last year than this  year (still waiting!), and then I remembered they've probably been hit pretty hard as well!!

Or, I could be completely wrong and they're just taking longer than usual for reasons besides the weather!

  4. I would say business casual, but I found out this weekend that conference styles vary substantially!

I went to my very first conference this weekend. I forgot dress shoes, so I had to buy some cheap new ones on the way to the hotel where the conference was being held.  I went to the reception and, of course, my feet were killing me.  I still had my cozy boots stuffed into my giant purse, and one of the officers of the conference and a professor of a top 25 university in my field said "Yeah, just change into your boots!" Even though the boots looked ridiculous with my dress pants, nobody cared!  My thesis advisor wore hiking boots and a fleece half-zip pullover sweater.  There were folks who were dressier, but they were apt to tell folks to just be as comfortable as possible!

As for presenting, we sat at roundtables with a maximum of five other people present and we talked about our research and findings over breakfast.

I'm going to a conference in two weeks where I'm almost positive that comfy boots will not be acceptable in dress code, and where I'll be standing in front of a larger audience to present!

I would definitely ask someone who has attended this specific conference about their advice on dress code.  I hope my anecdote shows the fluidity of conference dress style and presentation style =)

  5. I am not sure if they 'dismiss' per se, but unless you have a really strong background in other components of your application, it makes you a weaker candidate among others. The GREs and your latest GPA is their baseline elimination method for the first round of cutting the applicant number down..

I would strongly suggest going over the math and adopting some habits to increase your vocab score. the GRE really helped me prepare!

    Good luck with everything!!

I have a question for you ... you said "latest GPA."  I went to two colleges, so I have two different GPAs.  Does this mean they MIGHT only consider my latest GPA? I'm happy either way, but I'm just wondering.

As for OP's question, I would also recommend having your recommenders address your lower scores in their letters.  My thesis advisor was talking to her colleague at a top 25 school and he said that they look for Quant scores in the 60th percentile range. If the applicant didn't have a score in that range, he said that would "have to be explained."  So, there's still hope, and if the scores are EXPLAINED by you and hopefully your recommenders, then you stand a higher chance of being considered!

  6. For anyone who applied to the University of Maryland, I rechecked the website to see about application status and they will be sent out by mail, not email or phone. I'm not sure when but this is just a reminder to check your mailboxes also in this age of technology!

It's been giving me this message for a while, but I saw that last year and the year before that folks have been notified by phone call or email as well (despite the ASF saying decision correspondence can't be given via email ... But, I think what the ASF refers to in that case is a student emailing/calling them saying "What's the decision for my application?" rather than a POI or the University sending an official email to/calling the applicant).

Additionally, see the following from http://www.socy.umd.edu/graduate/faq:

Q: Has a decision been made on my application?

A: You should be able to view a PDF of your decision letter through your ASF. Once you log in, click on "Check Application Status" and click on the words "Decision Letter" to view a PDF.

I'm sure they'll send an official snail mail letter, but these might be some things to keep in mind.  Thank you for checking things out for us though! I hope this information helps or complements yours in some way!

  7. Thanks Gin, unfortunately my conference abilities are limited with a full time job. Hopefully that will change soon though after this app cycle. Good luck as well.

Hey, that's ok!! I hope it changes for you soon, too! In the meantime, I hope your job goes well =)  Thank you very much, Sociolite, and best of luck to you, too!!

  8. Any East Coasters attending the NEO-USS symposium at Kent State at the end of the month? I will be attending with my undergrad mentor and presenting a paper.

Nope, but I am an east coaster, and I'll be at ESS in Baltimore and SWS in Nashville if you're attending!  Good luck on presenting; I'm sure you'll be great!

  9. @Maleficent: Of course!  I'm so happy for you!! :D oh my, no ... no news yet.  I wish ... Oh, how I wish I would hear something soon.  I just want to be accepted one place, that's all!  So I know I can go to school in the Fall.  However, I might be hearing from Maryland soon, but that's also the most competitive program I applied to!

@SheWrote: Oh my goodness, I'm so so sorry my post got you down ... but they could have more than one round of acceptances coming out as those accepted decide not to attend Duke!  It's not over til it's over, as Maleficent has told us here =)  Where all have you applied?

  10. This thread makes me feel so much better about prioritizing location and proximity to home/ family/ community. Of course, fit and funding are important, but I would love to not uproot my life again (after having done so for both my BA in Montreal and my MA in Washington DC). Would be so great.

Not many folks understand why this is so important to me, either!  People have literally said to me "You shouldn't let that hold you back from achieving your dream," to which I say "But ... but I've applied to places nearby that I want to attend, so nothing is holding me back ... "  Of course there's a dream school in Massachusetts that I'd wanna attend (the thought alone makes me swoon), but I seriously doubt I'd make it there anyway, and I wouldn't like being so far away from here!

  11. Crucial BBQ, your post about the sheer cost of applying is so true!!  I "only" paid $225 total, but I only applied to three schools!  If I had to apply to 11 or 22, I'd be having a conversation with my bank going something like this:

Bank:  Gingin6789, you overdrew your bank account.  Is there a reason for this?

Me: Oh ... yes, sorry, I was applying to grad school

Bank: Oh yes, school does get expensive

Me:  No, no, I think you misunderstood me ... It was from applying to grad schools!

Before we get into debt from schools, we can go into debt from application fees haha.

Note: I DO understand why they charge for applications; I know they need money! This is just my ribbing way of coping with the cost =p  I'm not trying to complain, just to joke about the situation.

  12. Haha, thanks. Yes, we are still presenting. We are doing it at PSA (Pacific Sociological) and a couple of small research conferences here in Utah. They came back on board after the semester ended, but it was still frustrating to carry the project during such a stressful time. I guess you can't always plan on research going perfectly. :)

And my professors hated SOPs as well. It's a universal hatred, I think :)

A universal hatred that is apparently really salient in the admission decision process ... much like the GRE!!!!

Oh wow, that is fantastic! That experience is gonna be great for you!!  I'm doing my first two conferences this week and in two weeks ... both on the east coast though! I'm nervous, but excited!  And you're right ... there are always snags to research! It sounds like you have a great mindset regarding research!

  13. I graduated in December, too--I understand your pain! I was working on paper with a team of undergrads that we are presenting this year and they all decided to abandon the project on me.

I was able to haphazardly throw a couple names on each SOP, but as I'm looking over it I see that some of them I don't really want to work with and others I didn't even capture their real research interest. So, I think that could have been damaging. But with your stats, I'm sure you'll be fine! Good luck!

For all you Michigan appliers, is there anyone who still hasn't heard back yet? All my friends have heard either way, but they've been silent on my end. Should I contact the department? What do you all think?

I am so sorry to hear that, mormlib =( That's absolutely heartbreaking to hear that they abandoned you during such a crucial project!!  Are you still presenting?  If so, at which conference will you be presenting?

It sounds like we both have things we're uneasy about on our SOP.  Hopefully they can see we really were doing our best to make a great SOP!! I did have my thesis advisor look over it, and she said it was ok before adding "I absolutely hate Personal Statements ... "  She just doesn't like them, overall!

Oh thank you!! I am uneasy about my dang quant score, but we'll see how it pans out! I think you're gonna be fine, too.  =))

  14. No. I've emailed the graduate coordinator about possibly attending visiting days, but that's it. If I was to do it all again, I would probably try to network with professors more before submitting my applications. Time crept up on me before I realized what was happening and the last semester was a rush to get everything in.

Amen!!!! I was finishing my thesis and graduating in December, so I was just trying to get everything in! I did absolutely no networking, and I didn't put names in my SOP =( I've been kicking myself ever since!

I did get fortunate, however, and my POI for one of the schools I applied to (who I didn't mention by name in my SOP) is presiding over the presentation session where I'm presenting at a conference in a couple weeks! Later that evening, I get to have dinner with her and a few others!  So, I'll be networking *after* submitting my application.  I also talked to a graduate student who is currently in another program I applied to, and she said I should be ok so long as I mentioned my interests.  So ... it's nice to have that reassurance.

    We can do this!!
