  1. Oh no, I forgot about President's Day!  Thanks for reminding us, JewishSombrero!  I thought it was Monday the 24th for some reason, rather than Monday the 17th!

    [EDIT]

Actually, wait ... I've never had off in college for President's Day!  I checked the academic calendars of all of the places I've applied, and those universities are open on President's Day.  Paola, you should check the websites of the schools you've applied to in order to see whether or not those universities will be closed/open on President's Day.

  2. Congrats, curiously!! That's so awesome! :D

I did see the first episode of Orange is the New Black! It is very good!  I definitely needed to do the cleaning today though ... I ended up feeling very productive :D

I'm pleasantly surprised to see it's been such a busy day for acceptance/interview/rejection notices!!  I'm pretty sure we got over a foot of snow here (south-central PA)

  3. Bourdieu!!! Forgot to include him!!

These days, I also enjoy the work of Gayle Sulik and her critical look at the pink ribbon industry.  We read her book in sociology of health, and I got to meet her in Nashville last week.  When my thesis advisor introduced me, I told Gayle, "I need a hug from you."

...I wish I could hug all of my favorite sociologists ...

  4. When I was working on pooling together my thesis findings from the mountain of coding sheets, I used a grid notebook.  I was out of tablets, and while a grid tablet would have been even better, writing on grid paper was satisfying in a way I can't describe! I love the little boxes!

I've also been reading a lot about using only certain kinds of pens here ... I like using the papermate pens that come in a 10 pack for about a dollar.  They have black ink but are dark grey on the outside.  I have them laying around everywhere, and they always write for me!  Other ballpoint pens don't write properly cause of my lefty-ness.

  5. How about checking 15 application websites 10 times per day to see if the status has changed?

I can imagine the row of open tabs on your web browser ... I thought me having my three applications, Gmail, then Grad Cafe Results Search for sociology and the sociology grad cafe forum page was a lot haha.  I'm right there with you!

  6. Hey all!

This is my first shot at making a thread, so I just wanna know ... who are your favorite sociologists?  Is Guy Debord's "Society of the Spectacle" the only thing that gets you through the holiday consumerist madness?  Does the eloquence and depth of W.E.B. DuBois' "Second Self" make you weep with appreciation?  How about the fascinating, rich studies on the complex, emotionally draining everyday lives of drug dealers by Peter and Patricia Adler (or perhaps their study on "the gloried self" of college athletes)?  Does Goffman's "Stigma" resonate within your very soul because -- let's face it -- we're all discreditable?

Voice your love for sociologists here. I hope this helps cut some of the anxious waiting game energy that we've been experiencing (or at least I have been experiencing).

I personally love DuBois and Goffman!

[if this topic doesn't belong here somehow, let me know! I got the idea from the Philosophy forum where this kind of thread was quite popular!]

  7. Very detailed and elaborate advice.  My only addition would be that some people might do well aiding their studies for the GRE with some type of classroom prep classes. The face-to-face aspect of learning helps folks like me even more (in addition to studying on one's own, of course!!). Plus, I was studying for my GRE during the last semester of undergrad! I know I would have said "oh, I'll just study later ..." If I didn't have my classes and prep class teachers/tutor to hold me accountable.  I wasn't lazy or anything, I was just overwhelmed and swamped with thesis work, and I know I would have chosen tweaking my thesis over studying for my GRE because test day seemed less immediate than my weekly meetings with my advisor!

My quant GRE scores started in the 20th percentile, so I did manage to improve the quant score with classes and tons of studying.  Even more studying from the resources you listed would have helped improve it further, I agree.  I am just still thrilled that it's NOT in the 20th percentile now!

Also, I agree that reading constantly doesn't do much to help your verbal score.  That's a matter of knowing some really uncommon words and the testing format, itself, really well.

Writing was something I didn't focus on.  I basically dragged myself through it on test day just to get to Verbal and Quant.  I could have scored higher, but I wasn't too upset because I have a great writing sample that I poured my heart, soul, intellect, and experience into.  However, my thesis advisor presented this word of caution: sometimes adcoms may not know how much the thesis advisor was involved in the creation of the thesis. This made my head want to explode cause I worked so incredibly hard on my precious thesis.  But she's right in that the GRE writing score is a more standardized way of looking at writing.

  8. For schools in the tri-state area:  I'd be keeping my eyes on the weather and remember that there are closings and such.     Both my meetings tomorrow are cancelled so I can only assume that the story goes for a lot of activities at schools in the area.  UPenn for, example, is closed.

http://www.accuweather.com/en/us/connecticut/weather-radar?partner=netweather&unit=f (that's a gorgeous blue cloud moving over PA... 12 inches new snow! woho!)

Yes, key word is "new."  We've had unusually high snowfall accumulations this season ... I think.  There's still snow on the ground and we're getting dumped with about 10 inches tonight through tomorrow.  My boyfriend reminded me that February is the snowiest month of the year (he's a meteorologist), but that doesn't ease the sting for me :'(

That means it'll be a SLOW day tomorrow!!  I'm assuming Lehigh and Maryland will be closed, and Delaware likely will, too. I posted elsewhere that there are no more TV shows that I can think of to binge on, so I will be doing TONS of cleaning to make the day move by more quickly!!

  9. All of the schools I've applied to will likely be closed tomorrow. I doubt there will be any updates tomorrow. How will I keep myself from checking my email "ten" times a day? I don't know of any TV shows I haven't already binged on.

Tons of cleaning it is, then...

  10. If it makes you feel any better, I started here a couple weeks ago and I'm not on here as often now ... my time here has only declined slightly day-by-day, but a decrease is a decrease!

  11. Ah, OK! You were clear, I was reading too much into what you wrote. I would have been very interested to hear how Descartes had impacted your understanding of the ACA.  :)

OH, I see!! That is a very good question!  It was a thesis for sociology, so I didn't delve into the intersection of Descartes into my topic, but I'm sure that would be a really interesting way of looking at it!  I'll have to look into that Cartesian intersection =)  Thanks for the input!! :D

  12. I think the idea was that they were reading Descartes for some other reasons while they were becoming frustrated with their thesis, and the frustration bled over into their experience of reading Descartes.

This is what I meant!! Sorry if my post implied otherwise!!  I was reading Descartes in my Modern Philosophy class.

  13. I don't care much for Descartes, but I have a feeling that I might have been channeling my frustrations with my thesis onto him.  I was just beginning to solidify my topic and read through all of the literature for my literature review, and having to sit and try to digest the Meditations made me want to throw the book at the wall. It was probably the content of his work that drove me crazy, but just getting started on my thesis wasn't helping Carty's case either ...

  14. I am also in this same boat.  Within a larger conference, there is a "mini-conference" for a more specialized area of interest!  I'll be presenting at that conference.  The presider?  My POI at one of my schools! Now, the conference is less than 20 days after the deadline, so I am simultaneously elated and terrified about presenting in front of her.  Moreover, I'm going to a reception dinner with her that same evening!  *hyperventilates*

I'm so happy to hear you've been accepted!  Congratulations!

For everyone else, here's a word about being rejected and seeing your POI at a conference:  A person I met at a aconference said that they jokingly said to their POI  at this conference "Hi, I'm ____ and I recently got rejected by your program," just in a lighthearted, "no hard feelings," almost joking way.  After they talked, the POI said "I'm going to reconsider your application, actually ..."

So, anything can happen! Put yourself out there!

  15. That keeps happening to me with emails about conferences. I also got an email with "You are invited..." in the subject line, but it was for my alma mater's alumni weekend. Way to fake me out!

(hope all is well with your grandma)

Oh, I know what you mean!! And as for the emails from other schools, I think ETS gave my email away when registering for the GRE, cause I get ads for so many grad schools for programs that are in no way related to my field!  So my heart leaps whenever I see "university" only to see it's a program for biomedical engineering.  Not that that is a bad field, but I am in no way educated for such a program!

Thank you very much for your well-wishes.  She is doing ok!  She has recurring back problems and it was flaring up again! We had to take her to the ER instead of the doctor's office because of appointment and transportation issues, but she is resting comfortably now =)

  16. Vicstory, that is such a heartwarming story!! It sounds like you got interviewed for a great program that really takes care of its students. :-)it may have been a horrific interview process, but it's cool to see that they really have your back, even before an official offer of acceptance!!

Also, awkward moment just now: I almost squeed when I saw "sociology" in the subject line of an email in my updates folder, but it was just an update for an upcoming conference. What makes it awkward is that I'm in the ER waiting to hear about my gran. A squee of delight in the ER is generally frowned upon...
