  1. Mightmaus has been SUPER helpful in answering all of my questions about Lehigh University! I'll ask another question here so that others can see the answer as well.

Riverport Apartments look super great!  I'd love to live there if I can financially swing it (I think the stipend will be enough!)!  Have you heard anything about Saucon Village?  I know that it's listed on the website as graduate student housing.  Saucon View is also adjacent to Saucon Village, and it looks like the university shuttle swings by Saucon Village!

  2. UIUC Economics PhD: MSc GPA: 3.92 HaHaHaHaHa!! All of them are JorsummmmmZZZZZZJjjjj!!! Did he/she just cast a spell on the AdComm?

I just laughed out loud at that rejection message and your comment while waiting at the hairdresser's. That made my day, and that's saying something cause I'm treating myself to wings later.

  3. It's hilarious reading about these experiences. Sometimes it's too easy to feel like you're the only one. I tried setting up filters to catch some of the more predictable mail, but alas, those filters couldn't prevent my heart from skipping a beat each time a new mail came in.

    Ah, the inevitable heart flutter...

The day I learned one of the programs I applied to was sending out acceptances via email, I was engaged in a lengthy email thread with my thesis advisor, former professor, and classmate. We were arranging logistics for a conference that weekend, so I couldn't ignore my email, and I DEFINITELY couldn't suppress the heart flutter.

  4. I guess the number of applications depends on your situation.  I was pretty limited in where I could apply because location and fit were such strong determining factors!

So, I applied to 3. Luckily, I was a strong candidate for M.A. programs, and the programs were a great fit.  Three applications with $75 application fees for each meant I spent $225.  ETS sends your GRE scores for free to up to four universities, so I didn't pay anything in the way of GRE scores.  I did want to apply to a fourth school, but it turns out they closed their M.A. program in my field and forgot to update the website.

Anyway, I got accepted to two of the three programs I applied to, and I got rejected by one, presumably because of fit (their focus is heavy in gender, work, and family and social stratification, where my focus is in religion and the sociology of reproduction that is nestled within the larger field of medical sociology).

Instead of thinking of number of applications, check out a guide to graduate departments in your field if they make one, and narrow your choices down by:

    1. your specific interests within your field

    2. location, and

    3. whether it's a terminal master's program, a master's on the way to a doctorate program, or just a straight doctorate program.  (Which one do you want most?  If you're not sure, maybe find a balance of all three within your applications.)

I think those three factors will help you get the number of applications you need. =)

ALSO, consult with your professors.  There were three programs I was interested in that I didn't apply to because the professors I asked about those programs immediately shook their head right after I mentioned the universities' names.

  5. :P I live in the student dorm, and vending machines here have sandwishes and hamburgers if someone wants to have a snack.

We had cheetos and fritos in our student dorm vending machines.  Not that those are bad things ... but a burger sounds awesome, especially if it is a good quality burger!

  6. Where does one find cute dress pants? I searched the mall this past weekend and didn't like anything. I'm just not a loft/banana republic kinda girl. If anyone has example pictures of said outfits, that would be great  :) Also most of my interview weekends involve several socials, dinners, and parties... how dressed up/casual should we dress for those?

As far as hair, my hair is super long. is it fine to just wear it down? I don't want to come off as if I'm trying to look sexy.

Express.  I bought pants there for a job four years ago, and they're still in great shape and so comfortable.  I always go with the "Columnist: barely boot" fit:

    http://www.express.com/clothing/Women/Columnist+Pants/cat/cat320072

"Holy cow, gingin," you say, "those are expen---"

I cut you off mid-word and respond, "Four. years. These pants LAST!"

As for shirts, this is my stand-by.  It is the same shirt in three different colors (periwinkle, a greyish-purple, and the deep red shown in this link):

    http://www.express.com/catalog/product_detail.jsp?productId=8549136&categoryId=cat320062

That shirt is great ... for me, at least.  I'm kind of awkwardly built in that I have a fairly slim torso, small-chested, wide shoulders, and long arms.  It's hard to find a dress shirt that fits properly.  Most of the time, it either hangs like a box around my torso while fitting perfectly in the arms and shoulders, or it fits perfectly in the torso while I feel like I'm about to rip out the back of my shirt like the Hulk.

So, a shirt like that in the colors listed above with a charcoal grey or black pair of awesome dress pants.  As for shoes?  A VERY old pair of dress shoes that is still in decent shape, is "walkable," doesn't make my feet hurt.

I actually don't know anything about the socials and dinners, etc.  That awesome mod cloth dress linked above looks awesome for dressier occasions.  In case you missed it:

Speaking of which, Kamisha, WHAT did you do???  NOW I have to buy this dress because it is SO AMAZING.  Thank you!!!  I LOVE dresses with sleeves!!!!! :D

    As for this question:

I'm wondering what people's thoughts are on the following:

    - long hair:  wear it up or down?

    - glasses or contacts?

I would say whatever is going to keep you less distracted and more focused during the tours/interview process.  If I wore contacts, I'd have the urge to rub my eyes or put drops in during the visit, and if my hair is near my face, I can't focus.  Hair can look professional whether it's worn up or down, and either glasses or contacts should be fine!

  7. NOT a funny rejection, but one that is absolutely heartbreaking.  This is a student with excellent GRE scores and a killer GPA who wrote:

    I should just kill myself

Whoever you are, just know that I wanted to reach through my screen and give you the biggest hug ever.  This process is a killer, but please remember that this school's rejection does not determine your worth!

That statement may have sounded cliche or cheesy to the point where it needed nachos to go with it, but EVERYONE should remember it!  Just because you didn't fit a program's standards does not mean you're worthless.

Now, this person's statement could have been completely sarcastic.  If so, then I'm sorry for getting all sappy!

  8. Excellent descriptions and clarifications of the terms introvert and extrovert.

I would also add that a lot of super genius people who think they're introverts probably actually have some kind of social disorder. I feel like a true introvert is someone who has the ability to socialize but, like gin said, just draws inspiration from self.

    Thank you, Gnome!

I understand what you're saying.  I do think that the terms "introversion" and "extroversion" are conflated with "quietness" and "sociability," respectively.  I used to think that's what the terms meant all the way up until an undergrad business writing class, where the professor really broke the concepts down and explained them thoroughly!

As for social disorders, I can't say much (I simply don't know enough about them), but I can say that if someone absolutely cannot socialize or interact with others, it's likely not simply due to introversion.  Something else must be in play in such cases because many introverted folks have the ability to socialize or feign sociability, even if they feel like they want to crawl out of their skin when interacting with strangers or a large group of acquaintances.

  9. I always love coffee, but lately I cannot stay away from it because it's comforting!

It really is the comfort drink to end all comfort drinks.

    Besides lovely hot cocoa.

However, many people will retort that beer or alcohol is their comfort drink of choice, which is understandable!  There's actually an entire thread in the philosophy sub-forum for beverages of choice during this process. I love that thread!

  10. Yeah, I'm still waiting on all schools. I'm dying a little bit inside each day that goes by without any word. My advisors, recommenders, and professors have tried to reassure me, but they've told me they're anxious as well. Luckily, I'm working in a different department so I can largely avoid their looks of disappointment.

It's always better to hear at least one acceptance first, I think! It helps you relax when the other notifications come in. My roommate had an acceptance first, and she heard from another school yesterday (rejection). Even though she wasn't expecting much from the second school, she wasn't torn up about it because, worst case scenario, even if all other schools reject her, she still has that first acceptance. My fiance had two rejections (in the same day!), but by the next day he had gotten an acceptance from a third. We're banking on going to the same school, so I think that's probably what has me most anxious.

One of my schools says on their website that they start notifying on March 1, so at least I have that date to look forward to (or dread).

Your thesis sounds really interesting, by the way! One of our philosophy professors is like an Alvin Plantinga with a St. Thomas Aquinas obsession, and from your mention in the other forum about Catholic fan-mail, I'd say you two would have gotten along! lol

I seriously doubt they're disappointed in you!!!  Your stats and academic background look really good, and I know so many folks who are waiting to hear back from programs!! This wait is torture, but you will get through!!!  I'm here for you!

I understand wanting to go to the same place as your friend, too!!  It's comforting to know that acceptances go out in waves!

Keep me updated on what you hear!! =)  Just two days til March 1!

Oh, thank you!!! I worked so hard for about a year on my undergrad thesis.  I loved examining the intersection of religion and contraception in the media!  The philosophical intersections are also so interesting to examine!!  Your professor sounds pretty amazing, too!  I also have a feeling we would have gotten along!! :D

  11. I have developed conditioned fear responses each time my smartphone beeps. Seriously, today I got a happy birthday message from one of the universities I’ve applied. I nearly had a heart attack! Then I was deeply disappointed.

OH no!!! Who knew a birthday message could induce such disappointment?? I would have been disappointed, too!!

engphiledu, that would be AMAZING if that happened! Can you imagine how fulfilling that would feel??

  12. In Scandinavia they have a food around easter that my Iranian friend calls "that massive cream hamburger". No meat, just loads of cream in a cardamom bun, with marzipan if you're in Sweden.

It is sort of interactive because you can scoop cream on big bits of bun and dig into the marzipan core and it is PERFECT for stress because it is delicious and a time-wasting opportunity all at once.

That sounds .... delightfully perfect for stress eating! I am jealous!

Reason number 4594969063 to visit Scandinavia!!

Around Easter, we have the homemade peanut butter "eggs" that churches make to raise funds, but it doesn't take a lot of time to eat them, and they're so rich that I can usually only handle one at a time haha.

  13. My thesis advisor always told me "Nervous is good; Panic is bad."  It's not a bad thing to be nervous because it shows you're really passionate about what you're presenting!!!  I know what you mean, though.  My area of interest contains a small, tight-knit group (I'm interested in the sociology of reproduction within the larger field of medical sociology.  My thesis advisor made up the title of "the repro mafia" to describe the group), and presenting to at least five big-time members of the group was absolutely nervewracking for me!

I just kept looking toward the few people in the audience I knew, and their smiles and understanding nods kept me going!!

Seriously, it's the most comfortable I've ever felt while presenting!

When it's your own research that you've spent so much time with, and when it's an audience who knows the subject matter as well, it all falls into place. =)

THANK YOU!!!  I was ecstatic when two of the universities accepted me! I'm happy that I got my acceptances before my rejection.  I awoke to my rejection early on a Sunday morning, and I simply read the rejection letter, texted my boyfriend and family, rolled over, and went back to sleep!  Lehigh and Delaware really set my mind at ease! =)

You have all of your schools to hear back from, right?  I hope they get back to you soon! If it's any help, I heard back from the university with the LATEST deadline FIRST!  I was so shocked cause the deadline was February 1 and I heard back on the 17th! I also heard back from the university with the deadline of January 15 on February 17th as well!!
