  1. Well, I'm applying this year so I don't have time to take it. I would have taken it but I'm in another country temporarily and the logistics just couldn't work out. I'm just wondering if I have a chance. I have a friend who got a 6% on the Math GRE and he got into a top 30 school with a fellowship. He said they just "considered him as someone who hadn't taken it". Did you get accepted anywhere, though? I've applied to a high 20s, mid 10s and a rank 5-10 school. Two pure math programs (but applied research) and one applied math program.
  2. Hi guys, I did a math undergrad (with applied math minor). GPA 3.86, higher in math/science. I did not ever take the Math GRE, because I did not decide I wanted to do a math PhD until a few weeks ago. I'm also currently living in the UK as a Fulbright scholar, and I would have had to take two or three days out of my master's courses just to go down to London to take the test. Anyways, I'm applying to GAtech, Wisconsin, and Brown (applied math) for Math PhDs. Technically, Wisconsin and Brown do not "require" the Math GRE. But wisconsin says it can "severely disadvantage" your application if you do not have it. My profile is otherwise pretty good. High undergrad GPA, three great letters of rec, 1 from research advisor, 1 from directed study course, and 1 from a professor I've personally been working with studying graduate level real analysis and measure theory in my spare time for almost a year now who also went to Wisconsin for his PhD. A professor at Wisconsin also told me "your profile certainly looks interesting to me". What do you think my chances are of admission? I mainly want to work in PDE's, fluid dynamics, kinetic theory, mathematical physics etc.
  3. I applied for physics...pretty sure I'm the only one.
  4. I'll be moving to England from America in the next year....can anyone tell me what the whole foods situation is like over there, is it easier/cheaper to eat organic there than it is here? I'm a bit of a noob, but I would like to start taking care of my body and making up for the damage I did in college.
  5. Some1234, did you go to the visit weekend for UW? We might have met . Congratulations! BTW I withdrew my application from Berkeley because I won a Fulbright, so I'll be doing that instead.
  6. It's hard to frame an email.
  7. interesting...would be nice to see a breakdown by region though, as you only compete with applicants from your region I believe. I won a fellowship with a 5% rate, so I might actually apply. Thanks for the info.
  8. I can't seem to find any info on the odds of winning a Rhodes Scholarship...is anyone on here privy to this information?
  9. Just talked to my old undergrad advisor at michigan. I am "high on the wait list" but the plasma professors did not have much funding this year. It's alright with me though, I accepted a fulbright fellowship to study fusion in the uk!
  10. Congratulations! !
  11. Hey charmaine1, Don't get yourself too down, the fact that you were recommended for a Fulbright to the MOST COMPETITIVE country in the world is an amazing thing! You're obviously a talented and intelligent individual to make it this far and I'm sure you'll be successful in whatever you choose to do this coming year.
  12. Horn and charm Al I will write you soon as I stop driving
  13. Just accepted as the principal candidate for the university of york in the uk 2014-2015!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  14. Has anyone who was waitlisted at Michigan been bumped up yet?
  15. So are you saying decisions have basically already been made for the UK?
  16. I need some advice regarding Fulbright and grad school offers. I got an RAship funding offer a few weeks ago from a professor at a PhD program I applied to. The school is one of the top two on my list of graduate schools. The professor who offered me the funding knows that I am waiting on a Fulbright fellowship, but It has been almost 2 weeks since he sent the offer and I haven't responded. If I don't get the Fulbright, I will most likely accept his offer since I've been wait listed by the other school in my top 2. I don't want to keep him waiting any longer than I have to. He has also said that I can most likely defer my acceptance to the program for next year, but the funding will not be guaranteed to be the same as it is now. I want to contact the professor just to let him know that his offer is my top choice among my graduate schools, but I will accept the Fulbright if I get it. Can you guys help me word this so that it doesn't come across as arrogant?
  17. Any idea why the UK Fulbright folks said it would be "mid april" this year even though we interviewed on the same date?
  18. ^^I got an email from my affiliation letter writer saying that he "heard informally that my interview went well," but he'd like to know what I thought of it. Not sure how to interpret that. ..
  19. Hi, I applied for a partnership master's degree grant. They told me in my interview we wouldn't hear the results until "mid April"?? WTF!! And by the way there is already a Fulbright thread in the "Bank" subforum.
  20. wow, that's great! I got wait listed at michigan, too, but I got offered a full RA package at UW madison. Congratulations on your MIT acceptance! You aren't going to visit the campus before you decide?
  21. Anyone heard from Michigan yet? The coordinator told me they are still in the process of revieiwing applications... but the engineering dept. visits are next weekend.
  22. I haven't been accepted to Michigan and I worked in one of their labs for. whole summer last year...kind of insulting. Still waiting on Berkeley and UTK. Wisconsin admitted PhD. At the visit weekend Wisconsin said funding offers would come out this week or next week. It was really an awesome school and I hope they give me an RA.
  23. Wisconsin's department was amazing. Will probably go there if they offer funding.
  24. I was admitted to the UW-Madison PhD program but I have not yet received word on funding. I will be flying out there tomorrow for a visitation of the EP and NE departments.
  25. I am in the exact same situation for engineering. Berkeley knows I'm a recommended Fulbright candidate because I interviewed with them and told them. Haven't received notification from them. I'm waiting to hear whether I get the Fulbright to say anything about deferral to my other schools.
