  1. I wouldn't say you would be blacklisted... That's a little dramatic. The 'safe school' of course would not be happy with you, and I think it could hurt you in the long run. If you really want to switch, I think you need to have a very good reason. If you can accomplish your goals at the school you accepted, I would stay there.
  2. Is it just an application fee? If so, I would say yes. Some places have an amenities fee that are usually around $300 that they ask you to pay along with the application. Although, it's re-fundable in the sense that if you don't lease there, you get it back.
  3. I'm definitely not an expert on this, but what do you see as the benefit? I understand the idea that they are now all one loan, but I've never had a problem with mine being separate. I still do one payment, even though the calculated payment is based on multiple loans. Also, even though I had a lot of loans, they group into subsidized and unsubsidized. So, it's similar to having two loans anyway. I can just pay the amount they ask, or it gives me the option of allocating my payment amount however I want. This is just my experience, so it may be different if you have a different loan provider.
  4. I don't think this is true. My boss would have written an awesome letter for me. He has known I would be leaving for a long time. On the other hand, his letter wouldn't be particularly relevant. I think a few people, including myself, have had issues when professors expect you to stay at the university you are at.
  5. This. The same exact thing is happening with me. My advisor really wanted me to stay at my undergrad university. I really liked working with him, and I was very tempted to stay, but I thought leaving would be best for me in the long run. While I was making my decision, he made it clear that he wanted me to stay but said he was completely supportive of whatever I choose. Except, he hasn't talked to me since I told him I was leaving. I left a thank you card and little gift in his box for all of his help during the process, but I haven't even gotten an acknowledgement. That was over a month ago. I really wanted to keep a working relationship, so I'm super bummed. It also is unfortunate because it was a lot like your relationship with your current PI, so I didn't expect the reaction.
  6. Here is the thread that was already started:
  7. Is the offer funded? Either way, it is possible to decline your offer of admission to the program. The program may just be more annoyed if it was a funded spot. You are actually doing the program a favor though if you don't want to get your degree in Social Work anymore. It's better to drop the program now than decide once you have already started. You would be wasting both the program's time and your time. I think they would understand if your dropped the program because you had a change of heart. I wouldn't think you need to tell them you are applying for another program. The only thing I could see hurting you would be the fact that you sound like you don't know what you want. If the psych program some how knew about this (which I don't think they would), it could hurt your application.
  8. I've been to a lot of places in Asia. Japan, the Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, Thailand, Myanmar. I've also been to Chile and Argentina. I'm traveling to Europe this summer, and I'm so excited. We are going to ten countries in a month and a half.
  9. I think the final two years are most important. You can bring this up on your SOP though to explain to the committee what your GPA is lower than what you think it should be.
  10. So, I guess the new Macbook air is out. It's $100 cheaper than before, but you only get a $50 education discount.
  11. If you've taken a writing class, you should have learned there are multiple types of plagiarism. This would count as one. Accidental Plagiarism Accidental plagiarism occurs when a person neglects to cite their sources, or misquotes their sources, or unintentionally paraphrases a source by using similar words, groups of words, and/or sentence structure without attribution. (See example for mosaic plagiarism.) Students must learn how to cite their sources and to take careful and accurate notes when doing research. (See the Note-Taking section on the Avoiding Plagiarism page.) Lack of intent does not absolve the student of responsibility for plagiarism. Cases of accidental plagiarism are taken as seriously as any other plagiarism and are subject to the same range of consequences as other types of plagiarism. http://www.bowdoin.edu/studentaffairs/academic-honesty/common-types.shtml This thread should just die at this point, though.
  12. So, you want to start a program for a year, and if you don't like it, you will go to a program you deferred? I haven't heard of this, but I don't imagine either institution would be very happy with you. I don't think the deferred school would let you do that either.
  13. I'm not sure this is exactly the same thing, but one of my applications talked about wanting a diverse campus. I talked about traveling mostly and how my experiences brought a new perspective. I think you could incorporate your background and how it would bring a perspective that might otherwise be lacking. I might also talk about how you have incorporated outside perspectives in your research or life in general.
  14. I don't want to be mean about it, but you do need to own up to it. If you are honest about your mistake, he might be understanding. If you lie about it, it could turn into something bigger.
  15. It doesn't matter if you don't copy it word for word. If you don't cite the proper sources, it's plagiarism. Sorry. That's not what you were going for, but that's what it turned into. You don't have an excuse. There isn't an easy out. You need to tell him what happened.
  16. I think you need to own up to it... May not be what you want to hear, but it's better than lying about it and him finding out. I don't think anyone here will/should help you get out of plagiarizing.
  17. I get along with her. Mainly because I just let things go, and if something bothers me, I do it myself. I've tried talking to her about it, but it really doesn't help. Thankfully the floors downstairs are wood. I just figured I need to suck it up for another (less than) two months. I can do that. It probably sounds like my apartment should be condemned. Lol. I swear, it's actually clean. I'm just tired of cleaning up other people's messes.
  18. I will join the rant. My roommate is driving me insane. She is incredibly dirty. Not only does she do the usual stuff like leave all her things around the house, not do the dishes, but she will even leave trash laying around the house! As if the trashcan wasn't two feet away. I also don't think she has ever cleaned. Ever. She has only taken the trash out by leaving it in front of our front door. Of course, I'm clean and I've decided it's just easier to clean up after her than to argue with her about it. What is really driving me crazy is her dogs. When we moved in, she had an old dog. Things were fine (besides the massive amount of hair the dog shed that she never bothered to vacuum up), but then her dog started to go down hill. She started to lose bladder control, so she would constantly be peeing everywhere. It took her a month to get diapers on this dog. I don't want to sound heartless because I felt really bad and I helped her take care of her dog. At the same time, I don't want a disgusting house that no one wants to walk into. Her dog finally passed, which was sad but it was clearly her time. Now my roommate has a puppy that she is not training. The dog pees everywhere, including on my pants this morning. This isn't normal puppy accidents. She has had the dog for months and she still pees after I take her out every hour. She has razor sharp nails that she hasn't gotten cut so I constantly have painful scratches all over me and it's destroying my couch. The dog jumps on people, furniture, and tables. It's getting to the point where I hate being home and my boyfriend doesn't like coming over. AND when I leave for the weekend, I come back and there is dog crap all over the house because she doesn't pay enough attention to them or get up to notice it or clean it up. Her room is incredibly gross too. Of course this affects me less, but you can smell it when you go into the hallway. This was a long post, but I'm so frustrated by it. I was going to say something yesterday, but then I calmed down and reminded myself that I will be gone in less than two months. Plus, she will be watching my dog for me over the summer, which I appreciate, so I certainly don't want to burn bridges. I just want a clean house
  19. I really don't think you need to. If you have a strong writing sample, I don't think it would matter. Especially if you don't think you would do better in AW anyway. Not all work experience matters, but this one sounds like it would be an advantage. It's research related and it's definitely something I would emphasize on your SOP if you think it prepared you for grad school. No one here can tell you whether you will get into a top 30. I would apply. I would say to focus more on what school fits you and not on rankings though.
  20. Obviously, it's always nice to have a published paper, but you're work experience sounds great to me. It is probably stronger work experience than a lot of people applying. I had a weak analytical writing score too. It didn't hurt me one bit. I don't think schools focus on that score too much. Plus, I had a strong writing sample, so clearly the score was not representative of my abilities. No one can say where you will get in, but it sounds like you have a strong profile.
  21. I think they would understand. I declined the school I went to undergrad at, and I was told I could always come back after my masters if things didn't work out. Most of my programs that I applied to were super nice and I think the same thing would apply. I think it really depends on the department though.
  22. If they are different programs, I wouldn't worry about it. Unless the programs overlap, it's unlikely the program would know. Unless you are talking about a bad fit at a different school?
  23. I don't know about masters programs, but all the PhD programs I have seen only take people for fall. It might be different for your field... Have you already looked this up?
  24. I might be flexible, but I would probably prefer female roommates
  25. Sorry, that was very vague. I would have thought a response from the DGS would be more detailed. I don't know your field, but it seems like you got into some very good schools still. Two of my cousins went to Purdue
