  1. I had the same issue until I emailed them and found out I was on the waitlist.
  2. Has any one been accepted to UBC? I've only seen wait lists in the results.
  3. A very good way to get into philosophy of math is Mark Balaguer's 'Platonism and Anti-Platonism in mathematics'. If you don't want to read the full book, he has a shortened paper version of it called 'Realism and Anti-Realism in Mathematics.' For 'essential reading' in modern philosophy of math, there's Paul Benacerraf's two important papers - 'what numbers could not be' and 'mathematical truth.' Those two papers kickstarted a lot of the modern discussion on mathematical ontology.
  4. Does the University of Michigan even exist? I'm starting to have skeptical doubts.
  5. Good. I need a good shut out thread.
  6. Lifting weights helps to take my mind off the applications.
  7. Me too. Why would Harvard send acceptances via postal service? That doesn't sound very efficient.
  8. What the heck does that recent Harvard post mean? Is that the Harvard adcom telling us to disregard all of the recent posts from Harvard?
  9. Descartes' version of the ontologically argument is worse than Anselm's. "Worse" in the sense that, unlike Anselm's, it doesn't have any modern defenders; also the fallacies of it are more obvious.
  10. My school barely grazes the leiter report rankings, and yet it (pretty much) only hires people from top 10 schools.
  11. This dfindley seems like tough competition. My writing sample may have won a silly little department award, but it wasn't historically significant.
  12. My school did a seminar on "how to apply for philosophy programs" and virtually all of the professors who attended stressed that we should not contact any POIs. (Or rather, it's fine only if we had previously met and chatted with the POI at a conference about matters other than grad school.) Professors don't want their emails flooded with people who are emailing them only because they think it will give them a better shot at attending their school - and if that's your only reason to email them, then it will probably be apparent to them.
  13. If this guy was trolling then he knew exactly how to hit the right spot.
  14. I know MIT is a tad shy of top 5, but please let it be MIT!
  15. For NYU, even though the due date was Jan 4, I learned from one of the grad office assistants that my application would be sitting in their grad administration office until the last week of January, and so the philosophy department adcom probably received the applications only ~ 2 weeks ago. I doubt that they would be that fast at making decisions.
  16. Get accepted: strip down naked and run around like an idiot Get shut out: become a hermit in the himalayas. (kidding… sort of… I'd travel to India with my would-have-been grad school savings)
  17. Wait a second… schools are accepting people on weekends?! And here I thought I could turn my mind onto other things for a few days.
  18. Nope, it wasn't me! I applied to NYU, MIT, Cornell, CUNY, Princeton, Pitt, and then a handful of other schools that were lower on the Leiter report.
  19. My stats would probably give me away, but I don't see why that would be a problem. GRE: 166V / 163 Q / not-great AW GPA: 3.96 cumulative, 4.0 (philosophy), 4.0 (2nd major: math) AOI: metaphysics, general philosophy of science, philosophy of math Other Shit: best philosophy essay of the year award, undergrad research assistant award (in applied math)
  20. Hey guys, I'm another guy attending the philosophy application party. I was told to avoid these forums, but it's pretty much impossible to keep my mind off my applications, so I had to lurk. And now I've joined.
