  1. I know. And historically it looks like the rejections are spread out over days.
  2. And there's the first Texas@Austin rejection. Give me strength, or a bottle of wine.
  3. Also, I don't know how I didn't notice this before. but it seems like BU uses it's MA as a feeder for it's PhD. Kind of wishing I had saved my money on that application now.
  4. I feel like the Pittsburgh rejection letters should be coming in the mail shortly. It would be nice to have some closure on that one.
  5. I'm sure it varies from school to school, and I haven't done a thorough investigation of every student health program, but it's usually just medical (in my experience).
  6. That's awesome news! Especially the full medical/dental/vision - that's so uncommon!
  7. Wait listed at Northeastern. Woo!
  8. Wait listed at Northeastern based on availability of teaching assistantship.
  9. Why thank you! Maybe we will both get into the same program and amplify the awesomeness of the department.
  10. Two 1 am Northeastern emails. That's probably not a good sign. Not ruling out hope, but starting to look unlikely.
  11. Good news, bad news, semi-good news (read - waitlisted). I just want *some* news this week from Texas to avoid getting 12 potentially awful rejections over the course of a week or two. But really, I hope we hear good news!!
  12. I'm fairly certain academic masochist is redundant.
  13. And there's a Northeastern acceptance up. Cue more anxiety.
  14. I'm not sure emailing the DGS at this point will be fruitful, but that's just my opinion. I wouldn't say they have rejected you, and perhaps the 3rd LOR in this case will be like official transcripts upon acceptance, more a formality for completion. Not that any of that will make you less-nervous, obviously! But emailing again could put them off about you. No one really knows in these situations.
  15. I really just want TX@Austin to notify. Purdue started around this time last year, too. So much for my not looking at the boards/forum. But when you're on a train, nervous out of your mind since you're presenting in front of potential adcomm people, what else can a guy do?
  16. My goal is to not look at this site or the forums from Monday morning until Monday night after I've presented this bloody conference paper. Don't want to wreak of rejection while speaking at Harvard - I think they can smell it on you.
  17. I'll throw in University of New Hampshire. Not everyone gets funded, but there's the chance of getting a TAship for the two years or a full/partial tuition scholarship. You are also in charge of your own First Year Writing class, grading included.
  18. I can probably infer a rejection from Pitt, which is okay. More annoyed that I'll have to wait for it to come in the mail.
  19. I'm personally thankful for each day that goes by without receiving another 1 am rejection notification via email.
  20. I wonder when Texas @ Austin will finally start. Should be soon, I hope.
  21. I'm not directly equating fit to finance. But if you have limited means, then you have to make the ones you select count, forcing you to evaluate your reasoning for choosing them and eliminating others along the way. And for me, those 14 were what I determined to be the best fits. I'm sure I could "fit" into several more, but could I see myself accepting them in the end? If you can ideally see yourself at any of those 20 or 28 institutions and can afford it, then apply. I'm not saying there is a magic number, just that if others are feeling discouraged, doubling up on apps next year may not be the best solution.
  22. They would strangle me. And I imagine would probably try to talk me out of applying to 28 programs.
  23. I lost the quoted section, thanks iPad, but this would be in response to Strong Flat White. For me that number is so obviously less than 28 because as a grad student that would bankrupt me. Even 14 was a struggle. Factor in geographical factors on top of that. Then, as you say, having to research fit is a monumental task. I can't imagine researching 20+ programs in depth to determine if I think they would be a good fit, then crafting and selling to 20+ programs that I view myself as a good fit for their program on top of teaching, writing a thesis, and doing coursework. But by all means, if you have the time and the money to invest in researching, determining, writing and selling fit, and applying to 28 schools, then I say do it. I also don't believe more is specifically better in this case, but that is strictly my opinion.
  24. But would you be a good fit 28 schools? 14 is a solid number (what I did this round). All you need is 1!
  25. Glad I didn't see the email come from Virginia at 1 am or else I wouldn't have slept at all last night. Odd time to send out rejection notices.
