  1. A professor of mine said she never got a rejection from them when she was applying to PhDs. They're quite rude about it.
  2. (Because I haven't said it forever, and I need a reminder to finish my thesis) Duke English.
  3. I mean, it should go without saying that the market isn't pretty. You should do everything possible to reduce the amount of debt you take on through the entire process, including not paying for a PhD. You should be focused on developing as a scholar, not worrying about how much extra money you're taking on to complete your degree. It's an irresponsible practice. Another thing to consider is what is each dept's time to degree. For example, 6 years of 70% versus 5 of funded is a big difference.
  4. Fully-funded offer every time. The fully-funded is more likely to be able to support you in other ways - conferences, etc. If there was the potential for a fully-funded package say in the second year at Claremont, then I would say consider it. But from what you've said, it doesn't appear to be the case. If you think you could be happy at the other school, go with the money.
  5. There is nothing worse than grading annotated bibliographies.
  6. Just turned down the offer at UConn. Incredibly difficult decision to do so as they are wonderful people and I would have loved to have worked with them.
  7. Just turned down a PhD offer at UConn and took myself off Northeastern's wait list for the PhD. Incredible faculty at UConn, so I hope that helps someone on the wait list.
  8. So, I'm meeting with Jean Marsden, doing lunch, seminar on digital materiality with Fiona Somerset, meeting with her after, meeting with Dwight Codr, then Charles Mahoney. And then drinking with a good friend who came out of my program last year and is there currently. No, I won't be exhausted. At all.
  9. I am indeed! I think we might be doing lunch together.
  10. Visiting in the morning. I'm going to need coffee after the 3 hour drive.
  11. It's usually phrased "at least (insert # here)" but there are usually opportunities for more in most departments.
  12. I too am finally visiting next week and am looking forward to making a fully informed decision. Finally.
  13. Congrats to the NH MA acceptance. Hope to see you there!
  14. Writing Sample/SOP were the deciding factors. What they viewed to be my strengths are not entirely what I conceived to be my strengths.
  15. I mean, Duke is Duke. But I promised myself from the beginning of this process that I'd be open minded and not rush to any decision without fully evaluating any offers I received (if any). And since UConn is within driving distance, it's easier for me to visit and give them my full attention. And both programs want me, so it's only fair I treat both offers equally until I've seen what they have to offer. And yes, both are funded offers. Geography is not absolutely vital for me, but it doesn't hurt, either.
  16. I still have to visit UConn. Of course the snow interferes this week, and they're on break next week! But I'll know for sure before April 1st.
  17. I got my Washington rejection email at 6:50 EST. Finally, that's all of them!
  18. I saw it on the board and was hoping it was you!!!! CONGRATS!!!!!
