Philosophers aren't arrogant. We're just smarter than everyone else.

Seriously... if this day gets to be anymore boring, I'm going to end up buying and reading "Metaphysics of Being and Nothingness."
-
Congrats! Any word on your waitlist from ND yet?
-
Thanks. That makes sense. I really like the workshop concept.

I have a question for those of you applying to PhD programs from a terminal MA program. The reason I ask is that it seems likely enough that I won't be getting into any PhD programs on this, my first session of grad applications, given my general academic background (relatively unknown liberal arts university, poor early grades, etc.). My question is this: Do MA students generally wait until after they have finished their degree in the spring, and then spend the fall and spring of the following year to apply to PhD programs, or do MA students do it the way most undergrads do it and apply at the start of their last semester? Seems maybe that the former method would be more advisable, given that one would presumably be caught up in the process of writing a thesis and that sort of thing, but I'm curious nonetheless. My thanks for your opinions.

I'm convinced that I'm going to be at a professional conference someday, and some philosopher is going to make an off the cuff remark about dfindley, and at that moment we will know that we shared a slice of cyberspace together in the 2014 admissions cycle.
-
I'm bored. I almost wish dfindley would start a thread.

Do you think a flattering love letter to Rice might help my chances? Before discovering philosophy, I aspired to be a poet. Maybe I can woo them into an acceptance. It worked on my wife... Maybe something like: Roses are red Violets are blue Funding is awesome And so is funding

I feel like you just high-fived yourself

Well... today was pretty boring.

What, exactly, is going on at Purdue? What are they waiting for?

Is this professor including schools like Oxford and Cambridge in his judgment of European programs? I certainly don't see how one could maintain that Oxford isn't rigorous.

As a descendant of Irish Catholics, I'm fairly certain that I'm morally obliged to drink alcohol regularly. I oblige.

I'm starting to notice a trend: anytime I expect a lot of action on the admissions boards it tends to be painfully quiet, and whenever I assume that the admissions boards will be generally quiet, they explode with action. If, indeed, my expectations wield any causal influence over the relative amount of activity in the admissions world, it seems that I should do my best to always expect very little action, and likewise never expect a lot.

Welcome, and congrats on the Toronto and Syracuse acceptances! And the UBC waitlist! those are all fantastic programs.

I really don't understand technology well. I've never posted a gif...

I grew up in Southern California in the late 90's/early 00's, and usage there was somewhat frequent. I'm in Texas now, and apparently it has fallen out of usage in the American Southwest (even among the hipsters here in Austin).

Holy shit. That's the first time I've heard anyone use the term "tight" since like 8th grade. This made me chuckle quite heartily.

Not sure Boston University would be worth it? I'm afraid I don't know what you mean. Boston University is a fantastic school.

Dear 2015 applicants, here is what we have learned from the 2014 season

My approach to the SOP was to use the same basic format for each one, but to populate it with different relevant details relative to the department to which it was being sent. So mine was tailored without having to write a totally brand new statement for each and every school. -
Wow! Congrats to the Cornell and UPenn offers! Let's all hope this active morning translates into and active Friday. May the God of philosophy admissions smile on all of us this day!

Interesting. Fagan (phil biology) left for Utah recently. Seems there's a lot of movement in the Rice department recently.

BTW, DHumeDominates, I never said congrats on HFU. Congrats on HFU!

At least Yale seems to have had the decency to be timely with rejections. Besides... f*** Yale

I don't know if this will mean anything for you, but it's likely that I'll turn down my MA spot at Loyola. Maybe that will open something up.
