  1. I must admit I'm surprised at how many people mention the cost of sending transcripts. My school never charged me for a transcript. I didn't know that was a thing. Not sure how I feel about being charged for proof of one's own grades.
  2. Just out of curiosity, does U Houston have much in terms of port-Kantian european philosophy? Just curious, really. I don't really know as it isn't a research focus of mine. I applied there mainly for phil mind and to do logic with Garson.
  3. I just received an acceptance email from Wyoming. I'm very excited! This is actually my top choice for MA programs. Very small, personal department with a strong focus on phil science. Still waiting to hear about funding. Very excited!
  4. As I recall, out of state is about 16k per year. About half that for in state.
  5. I got the same email. I responded and said that I'd like to be considered. Being as I'm from Texas, tuition is cheap.
  6. I'm mildly perplexed by the two Rice rejections that have been posted. It makes it very hard to read my own situation, given that I've nothing but silence from that little slice of heaven down in Houston (do propitiatory statements improve the possibility of admission?).
  7. In past years they've admitted as many as a dozen (aiming to enroll something like half of that)... but of course that can all change from year to year. Goodness gracious the anxiety.
  8. Just curious, MattDest: did you take this to mean that they would only be admitting four or so students, or that there were four applications that stood out such that they felt very solid about admitting them, while there are still others they are deliberating over?
  9. I'm afraid I've run out of upvotes, but this is right on the money.
  10. Do they not have a PhD program anymore?
  11. I don't think UF has sent anything yet, either. Though I might be wrong.
  12. Pretty sure I'm just going to be in a state of partial cardiac arrest all day waiting on word from Rice.
  13. I don't think anyone knows what San Diego even means anymore. Scholars hold that the translation was lost millions of years ago.
  14. Makes me picture Alex Rosenberg turning red with smoke shooting out of his ears.
  15. Damn it... I knew I should have been reasonably bright!
  16. Thanks for this.
  17. thanks for the info.
  18. Can anyone claim the notification from Urbana-Champaign?
  19. Just saw two rejections from Rice. Seems like an odd pattern, given MattDest's acceptance today. So much for sleep/relaxation tonight...
  20. I see you've been admitted to UT Austin. I don't know what they're offering in terms of funding, but if location is important to you, I can tell you that Austin is a great place to live (I've been here for 4 and 1/2 years now).
  21. My how I would love to be having this problem at the moment...
  22. When I saw MattDest's Rice post earlier I really expected that more results would be coming out of their department today. It seems this hasn't been the case--unless, of course, people just aren't posting results for some reason. Maybe MattDest is the only young philosopher they wish to receive into their department this year!
  23. I do find that a good session in the weight room helps. This, I think, is probably because I played football for something like 11 or 12 years and so I have some sort of psychological link to weight lifting as a productive, stress-reducing activity. I don't really find other forms of exercise very helpful. I tried using my running/cycling routine to help reduce stress, but I tend to think far too much during such exercises for it to be very effective.
  24. I wonder sometimes about questions related to undergrad pedigree. Certainly my undergraduate institution should count as a "good school." Granted, it's a small school with little in the way of national reputation, but it is a top 20 school among regional universities in its category. I guess what I mean to say is that I wonder about pedigree, but I'm not altogether certain as to what it means to have a good pedigree. Simply coming from a school coming in high on Leiter's list?
  25. It seems to me more and more that there's no clear answer as to what makes for a strong application. Some find that a terminal MA strengthens an application, others seem to be skeptical of such claims. There is some evidence that certain programs place a high premium on GRE scores, while this is perhaps not the case in other programs. The weight given to overall GPA (as opposed to philosophy GPA) can vary from department to department. I suppose, then, that the main lesson I take from this is that given the lack of transparency as to what (exactly) constitutes a strong application given the differential importance of a given variable from department to department is that one, as an applicant, should simply operate under the assumption that every single last little piece of the application is important. Do whatever you can do to come across well in every application element. Leave no room to guess and, I suppose, no one will have to.
