  1. What programs in Operations Management did you apply to? Among my applications are 3 B-Schools programs: UCLA Anderson DOTM Duke Fuqua Operations Management CMU Tepper Operations Research CMU sent an email yesterday to acknowledge applications and say they were going to look at all the material they received to inform applicants if anything is missing. I had contacted UCLA a few weeks ago and they answered I would get an email shortly after the application deadline to inform on application completion. So for both these schools I think it is safe to say that no decisions are going to be made very soon. If you cannot find the info on the material on the websites, just email the adcoms, I have only dealt with helpful and nice people so far.
  2. I just dreamt of an across the board rejection. I had received 11 envelopes (for my 11 applications) and as I opened them one by one, they turned out to be rejections. I woke up after opening the last one thinking for a moment that it was real. My heart was pounding.
  3. I agree, I have not contacted faculty but I doubt now is a good time for this, quite the opposite actually. It would probably be interpreted as feigned interest in order to get some information or influence the decisions.
  4. Lol, true, I have not spoken to him but exchanged a few emails about missing material and he has been really nice and helpful in spite of the probable 100s emails he must get every day.
  5. I've been obsessing with the email all day and now I'afraid that it might mean waitlisting in the sense "we like you but cannot offer you a position right now. We are going to make offers these coming two weeks (not you) and see how they turn out. If some students turn them down we will come back to you". Please tell me I'm wrong.
  6. Yes, they send the info by mail. If you are refering to the "Friend account", the login should be your email and the password whatever you set it to be. It's quite intricate and not in a good way.
  7. I have no idea, I don't really know what it means. It's kind of cruel as well because they are raising our hopes but it will as likely result in a rejection afterwards. One could have thought that they are afraid to lose good candidates to schools which already sent their decisions, and therefore tell them to wait a bit before making a decision, leuring them with a possible acceptance. However, close to none have given out decisions so it doesn't really add up.
  8. That's so funny I woke up with the following: Thank you for your application to the IEMS graduate program atNorthwestern. We would like to let you know that you are one of ourhighlyrated international applicants. Unfortunately, there are manyapplicantsfor only a few spots, so we cannot promise anything at this point. However, we do plan to make admissions offers inthe coming two weeks, and will be back in touch with you regarding yourstatus. They only changed domestic for international and "in the coming week or two" with "the coming two weeks". Anyway since you are not my direct competition, let me sincerely congratulate you. GradCafe is like a lucky charm, it suffices to start a topic to hear some good news. My heart skipped a beat when I read "Unfortunately", I thought it was the classic email "we thank you for your application which was highly considered, unfortunately we received applications from very high calibre profiles this year and are unable to make you an offer" I'm not going to be able to focus on anything for the coming two weeks now...
  9. I have a hard time ranking my schools, mainly because I only applied to schools I would be thrilled to attend if they were my only choice. I now regret this because I am afraid of an across the board rejection. But going back to how I would group my preferences, I would say: Stanford, Berkeley, Gatech, Cornell Northwestern, Columbia, UCLA, CMU Hopkins, Duke, U Mich Although they change every day. Keep in mind that an acceptance from ANY of these schools would fill me with joy and tears. How about you?
  10. Gatech certainly is one of my top choices as well (constantly ranked as n°1 in the field). Unfortunately for our questionable heart health, the deadline is at the end of January so we cannot expect decisions to arrive promptly... How I wish I could fast forward a month
  11. Congratulations on the acceptance! You do not look too thrilled by the tone of your post, I would be jumping up the walls if I were in your seat. I would give a lot to know right now that I have been admitted to any of the programs I have applied to and live the rest of this procedure worry-free.
  12. Glad you all came, I cannot withstand the silence on the application front, at least we can share information or lack thereof. By the way whoever posted two "Other" on the Results Page for Northwestern's program with comments pointing to this topic scared the hell out of me. I saw two posts with the name of a program I applied to and for a second I thought "God, the acceptances have been sent I didn't receive anything. One rejection down, ten to go." Talking about Northwestern, I know they are reviewing applications for I know someone who got an email last week from a professor there saying they were reviewing their app and asking them for their Master's thesis. According to last year's results, a bunch of decisions were sent around the 10th Feb, I guess it will be similar this year. I read on college confidential a guy saying he had been unofficially accepted to Stanford from a prof there but the official decisions had not been sent.
  13. I cannot possibly be the only one applying here! (Although I would like to think that as it would increase my chances of acceptance). I know a few of you have already posted on other topics so come out of your lurking.
  14. I agree. This exercise is useful BEFORE application season starts, in order to determine the calibre of the schools you may apply to. Once you have applied it can do nothing but damage. The decisions are starting to roll over and you will hear soon enough. Just be patient, find yourself a hobby to take your mind off. Good luck
  15. Hi guys, There was a pretty successful topic last year where all the OR/IE applicants shared info and support throughout the waiting process. I suggest we reiterate this this year with all the guys and dolls applying to the exciting field that is IEOR. So if you are applying, have applied in the past, have some knowledge of any sort or just want to crack a joke, come post. As a suggestion we could all start saying what schools we are applying to in our first post and even better have it in the signature with the distinction pending, accepted and rejected. I'll start: Pending: Columbia Stanford Berkeley Duke U Michigan Northwestern UCLA Carnegie Mellon Cornell Johns Hopkins Georgia Tech Rejected: none so far Accepted: none either Dealing with silence on the application front so far. Anybody heard anything? Come join and good luck to you all!
  16. I am applying to Operations Research programs, but it is offered as a specialization in the Applied Maths Dept at Johns Hopkins so I may post here although my contribution will be limited to only that school. No news so far (deadline Jan 15). Best of luck to all of you.
  17. OK, now we are really entering the money time. I just checked the results page and there have been so many posts over the past few days. Thank god none was for the schools I have applied to but the pressure is now reaching its maximum. I cannot wait any longer, I have pushmail on my phone and I still feel the need to refresh it every 20 min; and the first thing I do in the morning is check whether there is a little green light glowing indicating a new mail has arrived. Also, I now hate facebook because of all the email it sends and each time my heart skips a beat thinking this one might be THE one...
  18. I think you must be right, they have have years of experience with the process and a pretty big set of past applicants and students to be able to correctly assess most countries' specificities. It is still very frustrating and cause of unnecessary anxiety for international students. And God knows grad school applicants really don't need any added anxiety.
  19. The transcripts from my master's in the UK somehow seem to have got lost in the mail for although I received confirmation of their being sent, 6/9 schools have informed me they were missing them. Note that some of the deadlines were back in December. Well, all the adcoms officers I have been in contact with because of it have been extremely helpful and usually accept numerical copies of the transcripts for your app review, which need to be later confirmed by the official. What's more, your file may be reviewed even with a missing transcript. For instance I received a mail today from a professor at one of my top choices: "I have reviewed your application to our Ph D program in ******** University, and I'm quite interested in it, but I could use some more information. Would it be possible for you to send me your transcript from ********* and your master's thesis? thanks and regards," So really don't lose too much sleep over this but as the other posters mention, do communicate about it with the graduate admission officers who are in my experience very nice and helpful people.
  20. sorry, I double posted
  21. Ok, sorry about that. However, that means that a grade which would give you a B in the UK (60-69) and which would considered an acceptable score there (2:1) would be converted into a D in the US...
  22. I completely understand your problem. I have transcripts from two countries, non being the UK and the rule of thumb for grading is that the grades' distribution should be pretty much a gaussian. I have the feeling that this is not at all the case in the US where more than a third of the students get an A at a given exam. Plus, in the UK, you would get a C with 50% while it would be a D in the US, 60% would be a B in the UK but a C in the US... So it is really frustrating when you have like yourself in the high 60s% = B in the UK which would have been an A in US grading. I hope adcoms take this into account
  23. I think you could say just that and ask for it to be rescheduled or maybe done over the phone. After all they are academia so they should be able to understand your concern more than anybody else.
  24. Congratulations! You can hardly make better than that
  25. Nice one. I love this post. The positive thread is supposed to make people better but it really does not because it gives you the impression that your competition is an army of 3.99 GPA -1550 GRE - 5 publications - twice-as-many-conferences - two books - purple-heart-decorated robots. At least this post humanizes the people and comforts you among peers who like are biting their nails until they bleed of anxiety. As for me I am international with a GPA that does not convert in a very positive way into US GPA, transcripts missing well after the deadline, TOEFL missing because I took it 2 years and 2 months before the deadlines and guess what? ETS deletes the scores after two years day to day. So I have to say I re-registered for the test but only in late January for there was not any earlier date available. I spotted a blatant spelling mistake in the intro of my SoP, turns out I want to have a "carrier" instead of a career... If I could just skip the next 4/5 weeks and get it over with.
