Writing sample: does it have to be on your AOI?
Establishment replied to AcademicX's topic in Philosophy
He thinks that Honneth reifies reification. Ironic, really. -
<insert your favorite philosopher here> is the worst philosopher I've ever read. His argument in <insert your favorite book of his> in chapter <insert number here> is paradigmatic of piss poor philosophy.

So jealous! Congratulations, you totally deserve it!

Most graduate programs in Europe tend to be taught in English in any case. Germany, Amsterdam, Finland are three examples that I know of, but I'm sure it's pretty much the case everywhere else.

(1) The responses given have not at all been ungrounded. There's been quite a bit of information released about lamparem. (2) We don't know enough about about any poster's capabilities here, and yet we give advice to the best of our ability all the time. If a candidate has quite low GPA and GRE scores, we become worried they might not make it past the first cut. If a candidate comes from a non-prestigious program, we encourage them to apply to more than just top-20 programs. If a candidate self-publishes a book and doesn't have 3 letter writers, we tell them they don't have a shot. If a candidate comes from an unfunded MA program and thinks it wise to send in a book from a non-academic philosophy press (and, I wasn't aware of this, is on their second or third application cycle?), we find their chances of success suspect.

Yeah. Just look at all the various different contemporary philosophers you end up reading, and their philosophical style/approach to problems. People have varying degrees of preference when it comes to doing/how to do philosophy.
-
No. Absolutely not. This would not have made a difference, and so few if anyone does this.

Doesn't get rid of the fact that they're cash cows, by definition of being unfunded.
-
Because CUNY's MA program is unfunded.
-
A few things. (1) Was that MA program you got into 2 years ago CUNY, where you currently are at? Because CUNY's MA program is a cash cow and thus an admission there isn't really reflective of anything. (2) Wipf and Stock is not going to do you any good at an analytic philosophical program, particularly if you're looking at places like Princeton. I'm afraid that hypatience's concerns are right. Were I on an admissions committee, I'd be concerned if an applicant judged it wise to send in a copy of a book from such a publisher.

He's a famous rapper. Maybe you know some of his songs, like, "Mo Publications Mo Citations"?

Issues related to sex- and gender-based harms/crimes
Establishment replied to ianfaircloud's topic in Philosophy
So because some people have divulged to you the psychology behind their actions, you have the right to claim the psychology behind the actions of others? That doesn't follow at all. I'm going to drop this thread because it's clear to me TheVineyard is just trolling for some laughs during this anxiety producing application season. That's a more comforting explanation behind some of the bizarre claims I'm reading here. -

I don't even want to bother with that, because you've asked that question before and people have tried to clarify for you. I want to press the fact that you want to ascribe to the lot of us a particular intention, which, speaking for myself, doesn't in fact hold. By what rationale do you have on our persons to claim that we do what we do for some particular intention? -

Okay, but that's not much better. You honestly want to claim that people are taking the position they are on this issue simply because it's socially desirable and will make us look good? The thought process (or lack thereof) behind that is pretty disturbing. -

Just for some additional points regading why we should take these allegations seriously, and that it's not simply the claim of one party against another (which is hardly reason enough to justify Vineyard's questionably aggressive stance)... but a third party at NU, a professor, has stated that she went with the victim to the police to file a report. -

I'm sorry, but this is such a telltale, that you would frame people's position as them white-knight-ing. -
My personal anecdote may or may not be helpful. I had to resubmit my GRE scores, although my situation was a little different. I took my GRE in the spring of my freshman year of university, and sent my scores to a few graduate programs because you're allowed to send your scores out to maybe 5 programs for free at the time of the test. However, when I applied out 3 semesters later in the Fall, I ended up having to resend my GRE scores to places. It's possible that they didn't keep my scores because I hadn't submitted a full application, but I think with how the technical infrastructure works, I don't think this was the case. Of course, it's also possible they only keep scores for a year, but then if you're reapplying with an MA this possibility won't be relevant. Your best bet is just to email your departments and ask, but probably plan on sending them again (along with your transcripts).

Possible Glass Ceiling for Applicants with MAs

Virginia Tech, I think for top-5. I think Texas A&M has a very strong placement record though given certain interests, but overall probably doesn't make the cut. -
Possible Glass Ceiling for Applicants with MAs
Establishment replied to MApplicant's topic in Philosophy
A lot of people who have re-applied a second time have had better success. You'll find random such stories either here in thegradcafe or on Who-Got-In. This applies to both those re-applying with a BA, and those with an MA. As for the MA glass ceiling, there may be a certain prejudice against MA students among some faculty members/universities, but t's not entirely clear. http://schwitzsplinters.blogspot.com/2011/10/sorry-cal-state-students-no-princeton.html did a little study on how much impact undergraduate prestige has on applicants, though I'm not sure how MA's fit in. There was that post on Leiter which displayed one sentiment. I've also heard remarks about certain universities not liking to admit MA students, but I don't think anyone really knows.
