  1. Russia full grant, ftw! Vpered!
  2. or, we can do both!
  3. I don't understand why there's such a delay from last year's Russia announcement, which came on April 11.
  4. I'm in history, and from starting my program (with a BA) to being admitted to candidacy (so, through the MA, all the coursework, and quals), it took three years.
  5. Yes, I agree overall. But I was only blindly speculating, and my 80% statement is likely quite exaggerated, although I'd like to point out that according to the word doc 16 of 19 fellowship applicants, or 84%, received the dates email.
  6. I still think that the number of us who received the dates email far exceeds the number of previous years' budget email recipients. Off the top of my head, and based on conversations I've had with people I know, it almost seems like up to 80% of us got the dates email.
  7. Jesus, I hope you're wrong! Wasn't it April 11 last year? This is getting ridiculous, considering that Russia reported its picks to the US side back on March 1.
  8. American Councils offers a combined language and research program. But, as the above poster said, the Hays cannot be used for language study.
  9. Yep, I got it too, and had the same thought as djevojka.
  10. Thanks, Vampgirl, I'm glad to hear that. Udachi!
  11. Yeah, I'm not sure what to make of this: I didn't receive a correction email, which makes me wonder whether my app was flawless, or if it got thrown out at the first screening.
  12. Why don't you ask these questions of your new program? Surely someone there can shed more light on this than any of us. We can give you generalized, vague advice, but the department should give you specifics.
  13. Best of luck to you, thelet.
  14. This is very common in my department, and I've often had to TA classes well outside of my expertise. It only makes us stronger teachers and scholars. Don't worry about it, but if you're still feeling uneasy, why not contact the DGS?
  15. Bump that, I would totally walk out of any class for something like this. I might even high-five the professor on my way out (but send an apology and an explanation afterwards).
  16. I was in a very similar position three years ago and chose school B. I've never regretted it.
  17. This sounds like a silly misunderstanding (on their part), and I wouldn't worry about it. You do seem just like the type of person someone would want to befriend in grad school, and most Americans should (and, I'd argue, do) understand that you had no ulterior or nefarious reason for emailing the whole group. Don't let this discourage you from being friendly and outgoing.
  18. I don't know anything about Royal Park, but here are crime statistics for Chapel Hill and Carrboro apartment complexes, which might be useful when you're looking for a place to live. I hope this helps a little. http://www.ci.chapel-hill.nc.us/index.aspx?page=665 http://www.ci.carrboro.nc.us/pd/PDFs/UCRStats.pdf
  19. Absolutely stay away from any of the places on Estes! I lasted about two weeks at Bolinwood before escaping with my life. Two of my friends lived in a place nearby, I think called Estes Park, and their car was broken into twice during that year. I know the price is attractive, but it's not worth it.
  20. Sounds like the bottom line is that we just need to sit tight and wait some more. I'd imagine that most applicants (depending on the country) will hear something by mid-April, and I doubt anything is going to come out in March, although I'd love to be wrong.
  21. Excellent; about damn time.
  22. Well, what was your response to your advisor's comments? It sounds like this was a discussion rather than an email, so did you get a chance to defend yourself? I guess what you need to establish first of all (which is not clear from your post), is just how committed are you? If you are, then why let him get away with questioning your diligence and work ethic and take the easy way out? Something like this, especially from my advisor, would only serve to push myself harder and would encourage me to persevere. There are times in grad school when you need to make concessions or take an easier path, but then there are times when you must be relentless. I recommend the latter approach here. Prove him wrong. You got this.
  23. You're right, I was thinking of the previous year. I emailed the DDRA people a few months ago and they confirmed that it'll be announced in the spring, so best of luck to everyone.
  24. Right, but if I understand correctly, last year's "Hays" was actually funded by the Mellon Foundation, rather than the DOE. That, at least, is what two of my colleagues who received it last year told me.
  25. The Hays was out last year but the DOE is promising to bring it back this Spring, and it should be available for research abroad in late 2013-2014. The IIE is the regular Fulbright. And, yes, the rest of them are only available to US citizens. All my work takes place in foreign archives.
