mmorrison I heard back from the DGS, she gave me some of the details about the open house and teaching load (1 course per quarter). She said she has been meaning to call us but recently got sick and has been, as you suggested, trying to firm up the details. She said they can cover $300 for travel and they will cover two nights at a hotel, plus a few meals throughout the two days.
This is the best advice one can give. I had the exact same experience. Rejected to 11 PhD programs after my BA at a small lib. arts college. I thought life was over and that I was not meant for this field. Did an MA at a very low ranked school and had fantastic advisers, did lots of conferences, met some people, and this time around I've gotten into 3 programs so far. I am infinitely more prepared this time.
mmorrison, I have all the same questions you have, and no answers to give you! Do you know anything about the TA duties? I'm sure it is comp, but how many classes etc? I sent an email to the DGS and have not heard anything yet.
I too am nervously awaiting Rutgers. Why would they tell the wait list crowd before the accept/reject? Any of you doing postcolonial? Kamisha, I have found cooking to be a relaxing and rewarding escape from the stresses of my MA program and teaching. Don't think you're too much of a sucker, I almost pulled the trigger on a French bread baking class. I think I might gain 50 pounds per loaf as I'd be too greedy to share!
I too was concerned about this early decision date. I'm accepted to several places and am waiting on my partner to complete interviews for jobs at UCONN and the other schools before I can officially make my decision. It sounds like, from shortstack51's experience, that they are willing to be flexible on this deadline thankfully. Now I have to weigh sunny CA with cold and wet New England! Those of you with experience in and around UCONN, what are your thoughts on the environment? I'm getting the feel that the actual campus is crawling with party hard undergrads but the surrounding areas are quaint and nice. I just don't like the idea of driving a half hour for groceries!
Mmorrison, glad to meet another potential student. I have not heard anything further than the initial decision email, then the email/letter from Heidi Brayman Hackel. I'm hoping to hear soon so I can begin making travel arrangements for the open house.
rdsull89, thanks for starting the thread! I have been accepted and am hoping to attend (mainly waiting to hear some information about my partner's job status) in the fall. I know it seems like a basic question, but we have been trying to begin the apartment search and I was wondering what your thoughts are on places to live in Riverside. We hope to walk/bike/ride the bus for the majority of our outings, if possible. Any advice? I hope to see you in March at the open house.
Hey Aspireperspireinspire, I was accepted at UCR for the English PhD, not 100% sure if I'll be attending (mainly due to my partner's job situation) but we both hope to be in Riverside in the fall! Will you be attending the open house in March?
